Left4Dead isn't really scary, it's adrenaline packed and all that.
What causes the adrenaline other than fear? By all means it should be the scariest game ever, with the horror movie ambient cues, realistic npc behavior, and massive amounts of gore. Why isn't it? Is it because the zombie scenario has been played out thousands of times over, or is it because the characters are so animated?

You're totally right. The first time I heard a Witch... well, I was torn between being scared and feeling sorry for her. I don't think she's as bad as she used to be, since the game's been out awhile and nearly everyone knows how to crown her.
Tanks by themselves aren't too bad though, as long as he's not on fire and everyone shoots at him. While there may be crossfire, unless your team is really hurting or there's a horde around, he's generally not too hard to deal with. I'll always be more wary of a Witch than a Tank.
The specials by themselves arent too hard to deal with, but when they get together and team up on your ass it's over. Yesterday I got barfed on, toungwrapped, and pounced on while being chased by a tank (I could hear a witch too).
Tanks are easy, just throw a molotov at the tank and then kite him.
The witch is also pretty easy if you spot it before it spots you, just shoot it in the head with a shotgun and then run like hell while your teammates take her down.
Tanks are only as strong as their surroundings allow them to be.
I would always post up in the upstairs bathroom with my friend in that corn stalk level at the end, and it was so scary because you would never know what was going to come running in next!
Throw a molotov on the tank and keep running... Dont look back
Orly? I just got the game a couple weeks ago. I started on Expert as I do with all games and I have to say it isnt as hard as cod4 or halo3 on expert. I always try to get around the witch but my goddamn teamates make it almost impossible to do. I think it's kinda lame that you can 1 shot a witch :(, takes all the challenge out of it.

Avoiding the Witch is sometimes the best thing to do on Expert, since she'll kill you in one hit. But, I have to admit, your method sounds pretty flashy and probably funny as hell to watch.
If you're going for a one-hit kill, just run right up next to her and aim at her head or torso. Use a shotgun though, because the other guns won't do the damage you need to kill her.
Alternatively, you can use a hunting rifle to hit her in the head from a distance. It'll stun her, and as long as you and your teammates keep firing, she'll be dead long before she reaches you. I prefer this method myself, since it makes the game a little more exciting.
Then again, you could always just set her on fire and run.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Eternal Darkness for gamecube. I had trouble sleeping for days...bleeding walls, hallucinations, the tv suddenly turning off, strange noises...I'm getting creeped out just thinking about it. Great game though

I had totally forgotten about that game. Thanks for bringing back the freaky memories!
Scary games, eh... I scare easily, but only when I get in to the "this is really happening to me" mindset. Once that happens, pretty much anything can freak me out. Ravenholm, yes, that would be at the top of my list. Generally anything else that involves fright factor and extreme dark. Heck, Metroid Prime got me sometimes with the corrupt Chozo ghosts.
Recently, I haven't really played any scary games. The only thing that comes immediately to my mind is climbing down through the tunnels where the humans cursed by Drake's treasure lay waiting in Uncharted. That really creeped me out- the darkness, the ambient sound, the zombies, and all the decay.
Generally, stuff that scares me probably doesn't scare other people. I think of it from a "if I was really doing this..." standpoint... Never really played anything else other than fantasy after those games, and fantasy generally isn't frightening, just epic.
Ravenholm gets all the love, I prefer the zombine area of episode 2 you know, under the tipsy bridge. Zombies with grenades Oh, and the antlion hive. That battle with the boss antlion scared my pants off.
Yeah, there wasn't much innovation aside from the AI, and the slow-mo effects.
It's a REALLY solid shooter, though. Aside from the half life games, this one is one of my favs as far as a story shooter goes. (Unreal Tournament still comes out on top for arena styled shooters) I'd highly recommend the F.E.A.R series to anyone looking for a shooter with a great story, gameplay, and solid graphics.
And seriously, you will shit your pants.
I remember countless times in the game where I actually had to stop playing for a week or so just to get a breather. One part that really stood out is when you're moving through this wing of a hospital under construction, and you enter into a room with drywall walls, and scaffold n' shit all over the place. The floor is covered in blood, you're literally ankle-deep in it. Anyways, all these ghosts start pouncing you, they run up, punch you once or twice, then run off. A vague outline of them is visible, along with glowing red eyes. Anywho, as all of this is going down, Alma (main antagonist) is just standing in doorways, when you approach her, she either walks away, or dissolves into dust.
It fucked me right up.

Aw, now I need to reinstall Doom 3.
Damn you zhuge.
And my god, Turmobil, you don't know the half of it.
There was this one part, where you're walking down a hallway after a massive gunfight. So at this point, you're pretty wired and think that more gunfights are coming. You go to a pool of water, start climbing up a ladder, then she bursts out of a fucking vent, claws at your face, and goes back in.
I thought I was going to have a stroke.
Then this other part, where you're walking down a subway tunnel (not the train tunnels, the tunnels where people would normally walk to get to the trains). It's all dark, I KNOW something is coming because a corpse looked at me as I came into said tunnel. So now, I'm kinda jittery and freaked out.
Anyways, I'm just balling down this tunnel, lights go off, Alma shows up in the distance, like at the end of the tunnel. I strained my eyes and was all "What the fuck is she do- OH MY FUCKING GOD". The lights had turned back off seconds after she first showed up, flicked back on, and she was DIRECTLY in front of me, walking at me. Once more, I nearly shit my pants.
And btw, the lights weren't even lights, it was like a greenish glow she was emitting.
But seriously, go buy this game man, you'll love it.

Another game that scared me was Shadow of the Colossus. Not in a horror movie way but in a 'fighting something 20X your size with little more than a sword' way. I remember the bird colossus the most, the way the ground trembles when he swoops by is a shit your pants moment if I ever saw one. You have to catch his wing and then hold on for dear life while navigating his hind quarters.
Never heard of the orphanage, prolly along the same lines though.
Haha, I know exactly how you feel about scary games. I'm the same way. I love it, but I hate it. Best advice I can give, is rent the game that includes all of the first FEAR games (if you've got an Xbox 360) and invite a couple buds over, and play them over 3 nights or so. It is so much fun.

Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
1 propane tank
1 pipe bomb
4 m4 clips
1 backwards sprint
Tanks are only as strong as their surroundings allow them to be.

You can sneak up on a witch and 1 shot her....

My god, did that ever mess me up.
