The question came to me upon reading posts here about possible Half-Life 3 screenshots, and people discussing being scared while playing HL2 long ago.
I started thinking about my introduction to Diablo and how it was the first video game to ever make me JUMP at a virtual terror. I used to play Diablo 1 when I was a kid, about 12 years old, late into the night on weekends. Because everyone else was asleep in the house, I had the lights off and wore headphones so my slaughter-sprees wouldn't disturb the rest of the family.
I recall the very first time I encountered Diablo himself. I knew I was approaching the end of the game but wasn't sure how much further away big D was. So there I sat. All alone. In the dark. With headphones turned up a little too loud. Concentrating hard on the screen waiting to get a glimpse of him, when suddenly...
MUAHAHAHAHAHA!
Nearly knocked me outa my chair.
Anyone else recall any scary moments from video games?

Huh, I was actually considering making a topic like this after reading the Half Life stuff too.
The only game I can think of that scared me was the original(1992) Alone in the Dark when I was a kid. No particular part, it was just a creepy game. I even had a nightmare or two from it. Then again I guess I would have been about 6 at the time.
Other than that, games that were supposed to be scary just haven't been. I suppose there have been a few with a sudden enough noise to make me jump, but not really scare me.
What made my heart skip a beat-
Resident evil 4- first time i met chainsaw guy and realised I couldn't down him with a single bullet..there were also zombies coming to grasp me...Combined effect interesting!
Diablo 1- BUTCHER!!!! Yay.
Ah there are many games that have scared me
Half-life 2, doom 3, Quake 4(sewer level), F.E.A.R series

The first Silent Hill game did it for me, especially in the beginning where you're walking down that alley. The atmosphere and camera angles freaked me, but it was just a game I had to keep playing.
I've played other "scary" games, but none have scared me like Silent Hill.
Heretic: ambient sounds of random monsters making weird sounds behind doors; D'Sparil laughing.
heXen: chaos serpents, right after we killed D'Sparil who was on an unkillable chaos serpent; ambient effects in Guardian of Steel level; random levels with centaurs, most of the game, really, the music was creepy enough.
Diablo: Butcher, fresh meat and all that; the knights in Hell. Also Hellfire opening video was awesome.
heXen II: Skull Wizards at the beginning on hardest difficulty level due to a bug (WTF???); first encounter with red Knight Archer laughing.
Heretic II: any Cloud Fortress area.
Clive Baker's Undying: pictures with people moving in them.
HL2: the bridge area. Music + falling down every five seconds did it.
Dead Space had me screaming for the first bit, but eventually I was able to get used to it, but goddamn is that game scary. F.E.A.R. is another one a bit like that, although that had me more scared throughout as opposed to the initial frightening alone.
SplatterHouse on Sega did a good number on my childhood mind. I dont know why my parents let me have that game haha, remaking it for the Xbox 360 too! Soooooooooo stoked!

Exactly....I can't agree more, other games where "scary" but nothing will ever beat the first silent hill. The story part in the hospital and the nurse...made me shit myself.
Nobody thought L4D was scary? There is nothing scarier than hearing a witch or a tank in expert imo. The game does have some funny parts that lighten the mood, it's not all serious like the Silent Hill games.
My sister-in-law can't play Left4Dead. She loves zombie stuff in general but they scare the crap out of her. She and my brother recently got it but she has a really hard time playing.

You're totally right. The first time I heard a Witch... well, I was torn between being scared and feeling sorry for her. I don't think she's as bad as she used to be, since the game's been out awhile and nearly everyone knows how to crown her.
Tanks by themselves aren't too bad though, as long as he's not on fire and everyone shoots at him. While there may be crossfire, unless your team is really hurting or there's a horde around, he's generally not too hard to deal with. I'll always be more wary of a Witch than a Tank.

I also remember my sister getting the red cartridge of Doom for SNES and I was scared just watching her.

The original alone in the dark is a classic xD
Theres that demo where you start in a room and you have to move the closet to block the window so that chicken monster wont come in xD
