Here's a tactical question. As I can run out of capacity to cast spells, can I force my enemy into doing the same thing? You know how you can see an enemy mage, he'll throw some spell at you and you run away and he doesn't always follow you? Is he using up all his junk and unable to keep casting short of resting when I do? Ya know what I mean?
Yeah, enemy mages can run out of spells to cast too.
So if you send in a guy, hopefully equipped with items to negate any form of mind control, mages will use up all their spells protecting themselves, and trying to harm you.
Then, just run away, wait until their spells wear off, rinse, and repeat.

This strategy has worked very well so far. It feels kind of cheap, but it ain't my fault if they don't come after me. They're just pussies, as mages in video games usually are. As for my own party though, I still don't have a full blown mage. I read that that Ogre I killed in the carnival tent was a potential party member, but I killed her as per my RPG preference of usually just choosing a course of action and sticking with it.
Is there any other good mage out there that will eventually join my party?
Eh, well I had to use that strategy quite a few times. I'd always get raped by mages. Cheap yes, but it works.
Ah, damn man you missed a pretty decent mage.
She was weak, but had decent spells.
Well, there is this one chick who will join you eventually, a drow, she is a cleric and can cast some pretty nice spells.
Also, there is another girl, you have to free her castle or something. Pretty sure you can find her in the copper coronet.
Theres one guy that I never found, Edwin or something, who apparently is one of the best mage characters in the game. I'd look for a walkthrough on how to find him.

I have a reliable walkthrough that I use sometimes. But I like trying not to use it and just getting help and feedback from you guys. And I have the Drow cleric already. She is pretty dang useful, even with her sling.
welcome to the world of my favorite rpg - baldur's gate.
the city is actually quite simple. waukeen's promenade= adventurers mart for items. slums= copper coronet which is where you will find all of the good quests at the start of th e game.
talk to nalia or korgan or lord jeiran at the coronet to trigger quests (anomen is a damn good fighter/cleric) and it will trigger quests. nalia's quest is a good starter. to travel to d'arnise keep after talking to her go to the city gates and you'll be good to go!
if you have any specific questions don't hesitate to ask - i am a bg maestro

beating drizzt with a single char in bg1 is fucking impressive. your hits only land on a critical strike... and his attacks do double damage (death save to negate)

That strategy will get you stuck in this game pretty quickly as you will probably end up killing an NPC you needed to talk to to finish the game.
And yeah, she is one of the best mages in the game. she also has priest spells. The next mage you will probably come across is Nalia. she is ok, she gets along with most people and doesnt cause any fights. Your other best choice is Edwin Oddesserion.
This guy is a selfish, egotistical, manical, sarcastic, pompus asshole. And he also killed Minsc's former charge. So the big guy (and Boo ) do not like him. He will bait Minsc incensitly until Minsc cracks and loses it in a fit of BERSERKER RAGE! RRAAAWWWRRR!!!!, which unless you have decked Edwin out with some good spells, Minsc will run this guy thru and your out another mage.
Your third choice is the talkative gnome, Jan Jansen. He either drives people nuts with his rantings and raving about turnip selling and dune orcs, and his one tall tale about his uncle scratchy.
If you have an earlier save point, before you killed Aerie, I would reload that one and try save her this time. Sure she has all of 30 HP but her spells can usually keep her is a semi untouchable state, and once you get a set of elven chain, your set.

You seem to be going strong with the evil gang, so like Elfen said, Edwin is the best choice.
He is without a doubt the best mage in the game, as he gets extra spells because of his personal amulet. He's also the only mage in the game to have 18 intellect I think. So definately aim for him.

The only issues with Edwin is, if you do Korgan's books quest first, you cannot do Edwin's scroll quest which is in the same area. And Edwin's scroll quest is a hell of a good laugh.
And second albeit minor, Edwin cannot identify items. Identify is part of the Divination School of magic, Edwin is a conjurer, and thus of the opposite school of magic to Divination and therefore cannot use their spells. He can't learn Divination spells, and he can't use Divination scrolls. Which means if you want an item identified you have to go to a temple.
The only problem with an evil party, is the characters will learn if you get your Reputation too high. 19 or 20. Too low and the Good aligned people leave, Minsc, Keldorn, Nalia. The Neutral aligned people are ok with the odd killing or to but if you make a habit out of it they leave too. Luckily some quests will drop your rep. As does simply having Viconia in your party.
If it gets to high you can kill a peasant when no guards are looking, which I think drops your rep to around 7 or 8. then you can paid gold in a temple to get it to around 10, 11 or 12. This is the optimal level as it will still give an evil party the ability to progress thru the game, as some NPCs won't talk to you if you're rep is too low or if as soon as you enter a city the guards try kill you (your rep usually has to be around 1,2 or 3 for that to happen though).

Yeah, I'm definitely way past the point of getting that chick from the circus tent. That quest was one of the first things I did in Chapter 2.
And I suppose I do like the more evil party members. I just hated that asshole Korgan and all his noble mumbo jumbo stuff. Then he attacked Viconia and I was like, that's it, you're done.
Just referencing the mage-trick by the other user. It doesn't work on high level caster like lich. I assure you that lich in BG2 are NOT pussies, unlike NWN. You will need some high level killing spell to kill something like that. I had to reload many many many times before beating the lich. You can counter him in a tomb inside town; act 2 and up.
I fought that one Lich in the tomb in that Unseeing Eye quest. Easily one of the most difficult battles so far. I'd lose up to three players each time. But most these battles are just figuring out just the right strategy.

No, Kangaxx is. The one in the coffin in the Unseeing Eye lair is part of the Kangaxx quest. Kangaxx is the hardest single creature in the game. If you can beat him you can beat anybody in BGII.
His imprisonment spell (of which he can cast 10 in one round) is basically a wipe if he gets any off. its an interruptable attack. And if it lands it basically "deletes" which every character it hits. For some reason, not even the Freedom spell will bring them back. It works for everyone else that casts Imprisonment. Just not Kangaxx.

Ahg, I remember fighting him once.
Stumbled upon him in the tombs and holy shit, could not take him down.
Also, anyone ever fight that dragon Firkragg ?
May not be the right name, but I know it's something like that.

Is he that huge fuck off green dragon that you walk past during the quest with Mazzy? I didn't even wanna touch that thing. I figured it was possible to beat him, but not by an inept player like myself.
He can be solo'd by a mage with Wand to Cloudkill with 10 charges on it. Just don't get too close. Woo for cheese.
The Dragon near Mazzy is harder than Firkraaq as he has poison spells.
Isnt he a lich too? I dont remember him being so hard but maybe I have beaten him as a slayer or sth.
yes Kangaxx is a lich, he is actually a demi lich, he is just a floating skull.
He can easily beaten by imploring the most cheesiest method ever. Equip 1 scroll of Protection from Abjuration (imprisonment is a abjuration spell) the rest of your party equips scrolls of Protection from Undead (thus making you invisible to undead). Kangaxx will blow his inprisonment on the one party member he can see (the one who is immune to the spell) As he has minimal life (just epic as hell armors) he will die quickly.
But that is pure cheese.

Ah. never knew that about the cloudkill, I'll have to give that a try.
Also never knew about the green dragon in that area with Mazzy.
Man, this thread makes me want to reinstal that game...

Cloudkill is pretty cheap and powerful for low level spells. Other spells like chromatic orb (level one wizard, depend on caster level) CAN instant kill anyone with weak resistance and such.
BTW "The wave" halbert, along with silver sword, and [insert that ungraded hammer of the bolt here] is the most powerful and useful weapon in the game.

He can, but most likely not the first time you meet him. (Unless you emply cheesy strategies. One is to cast doom and similar spells on the dragon and then chromatic orb, hoping that the instant kill effect will kick in.)
