Just pointing out that both of the sources were from before blizzard announced D3. So now we're down to 1 unannounced game, the mmo. I hope its a new franchise or starcraft, as a D3 expansion or 2 would still qualify as not expanding the trilogy but expanding the franchise. In my opinion diablo becoming an mmo doesn't really add anything. However playing a terran marine is very different from playing the race. Blizzard has enough rep points and mmo experience to launch a new franchise should they wish. The game would not be ignored just because it doesn't get diablo or starcraft slapped on the box.

When killing two birds with one stone, there is a question that often floats in to my mind: Where the hell did I put that shotgun?
There is an important distinction between poetic justice and irony. Poetic justice kills a homicidal maniac with his own gun. Irony makes a homicidal maniac's gun drip water out the barrel.

It's hard to say. It'd be fun to explore Starcraft and Diablo in the same way as happened in WoW, and I don't mean running around filling out a map, but really fleshing out the world beyond what is possible in a regular game.
At the same time, I can't say I'm in need of a new franchise. So if Blizzard wants to stick to their big 3, I'm all for it

You said explain to you how an MMOFPS would work and I said go play counterstrike because it IS an MMOFPS.
Not really. The defining factor of an MMO that separates it from a regular online mutliplayer game is that is is a larger world that allows for more persistent interaction between players than is possible in Counter Strike is. Hosting a server, playing for a few minutes and then doing it again with nothing carrying over between games is definately not something defining an MMO.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

bliizzard made SC2 into 3 separate games because the campaign is going to be so huge
i ask myself why do they want so much content and LORE? i think they are trying to get a solid story-line for SC2 so they can turn into an MMO

Blizzard said that their next-gen MMO wont be a new Warcraft.
They also said that its going to be completely different and it will be focused on different aspects. That alone makes me think of a more PvP oriented game (maybe something like Warhammer Online with RvR?) thats made for the more mature fanbase.
Now talking about a fanbase, its pretty hard to make a successfull MMO without an existing fanbase. Look what happened with Tabula Rasa for example, or Age of Conan (even though Conan had some hardcore fans, they got dissappointed early on).
That leaves us with 2 chances (since there cant be another World of Warcraft). Starcraft or Diablo.
With the chances about even, i'll try to see things that may hint towards a MMO:
Starcraft:
Pro:
Huge campaign, lots of lore and most likely more heroes/important characters that could be lore figures to fight/interact with in a MMO.
Having planets gives the developers freedom to make PvP really important. If a faction does well in battle against the others could gain control of the planet and all the resources/vendors. That would make PvP (one of the aspects that arent that good in WoW) much more interesting usefull.
Contra:
The huge world has its problems. Each planet would have to be huge. As a planet and different from each other. That requires alot of work, just as much as to create interesting background for every quest on every planet. RvR wont be fun unless there are many players around to fight each other.
Zerg wont be easy to make playable, so many of the fans will be dissappointed.
Diablo:
Pro:
The outside world gets static, which means the world of Sanctuary is going to feel more real. The locations will be known on the map, which already is much more detailed.
Diablo is much more mature than either Warcraft and Starcraft, which would make it even easier to make a brutal, blood stained MMO.
Chances to create factions (will know more once we've finished Diablo 3) but there could aswell be human rebels, people that fight for the High Heavens and those allied with the Burning Hells. Appearances could change aswell and RvR (Realm vs Realm) would also be possible with either side gaining control over areas after winning campaigns against each other.
and last but not least:
As Blizzard officials said (i think it was Wilson himself): "Diablo 3 will be the end of the Trilogy, but definitely not of the franchise".
i'm hinting more towards a Diablo MMO. Its not going to be too late before its announced. And its going to be released before WoW is dead. Blizzard already said that its going to be quite different and that WoW will be supported at that time too.

Con: Requires a vastly different combat system from that of WoW. I'm not too familiar with how it works in AoC, but I'm thinking that would be a big challenge.

that would depend really. Both Starcraft and Diablo would require completely different ways to combat your enemies with Diablo being closer due to the nature of the games (fantasy and no sci-fi, except maybe the protoss that use energy blades). The combat system would in any way be different as Starcraft would be more like a MMO RPG/FPS mix with Diablo having to be sort of a MMO-Hack & Slash (that would be quite a challenge to balance for PvE/PvP).
AoC uses combos as in "use an ability and hit on the right direction to avoid the active defense of the enemy". Each combo hits on a different location so if you manage to hit the enemy where he least expects it you do massive damage. It was quite interesting, to be honest and kept you focused.
Probably a diablo mmo. I guess a SC mmo is just as plausible but I think that diablos gameplay and as of d3 being released, more fleshed out world and story makes it the best candidate.
It's not going to be world of starcraft, lol. Didn't they say it'll be a new franchise?
i think they didnt say a thing except it wont be World of Warcraft 2. Then (typical for them) they left us puzzled to try and figure it out in topics like this one
Huh? Are you a bit slow?
You said explain to you how an MMOFPS would work and I said go play counterstrike because it IS an MMOFPS.
Quit your obsession with WoW already because it is an M M O R P G not an M M O F P S. If you need me to put spaces between every letter I will btw.

1.World of Diablo: Sanctuary
2.Starcraft Ghost Online
3.Blackthorne Online (old school)
I hope it is diablo mmo that they are working on,in other i ll buy beer for all forum members.
That would actually be pretty tight. You could be going around space spitting people to death as zerglings or slaughter people as zealots.
