I just completed my second play through with the game, making opposite story choices of my first play though (whoever has played and beaten this game will know what I mean). I'm going to play through a third time and do everything the way I think is best after trying it all out, but that's not the point of this thread.
Pretty much, I just wanted to express how much I love this game. This game is fucking amazing. The storyline is one of the best I've ever seen in a video game, it's like playing a movie. This game is epic in every sense of the word, from start to end. The beginning really starts the game off right with how cinematic the whole thing is. The ending will really have you sitting there going "Wow ..." after the first time, at least that's how I was. I was instantly pumped for the next one to come out, to continue the awesome ass story. Plus, throughout the entire thing, it really evokes some emotion in you. Without spoiling (possible spoilers) too much, at one point it becomes obvious a certain person used you for his own personal agenda, and is kicking you off to the side. Holy shit, I was so fucking pissed, I was wishing there was an option to blow his brains out right then and there.
The characters are all done top notch - they're all interesting with awesome back stories and histories applied to them. You really, at least for me, actually care for them as much as you can a video game character. They all have distinct personalities and stuff, and the voice acting was done amazingly. Everything just seemed to "fit" with the characters, and it's awesome the way certain choices will carry over into the next game (again, you have to play to know what I mean).
The setting in this game is my favorite in almost any game (I love space, so I guess that makes me bias). The game takes place in the milky way galaxy, our home galaxy. You can travel between systems via the solar map in your ship. It's pretty much a huge map of the milky way, and each galaxy has a pin point on the map. You can zoom in and check out each planet, travel to each system, etc. There's like 15 different systems and clusters that you can travel to, each with about 4-8 planets in their system. You can't land on every planet, but you can servey them for certain quests.
The customization is awesome, as you can make your character look about like anyone you've probably ever met. lol. There's a thread on the Mass Effect website that shows how to make all kinds of different celebrities. Aside from your characters face, gender, etc, the weapons and armor in the game are awesome as far as variety and customization. There's many, many different armors and weapons, and each of them have slots for upgrades. In armor, you can apply upgrades to give you more defense, shields, protection against certain things, sensors, etc. (Each can be taken away and applied to another). Weapons are cool, as you can add mods to your weapons (sorta like CoD4), and you can also have custom ammo, which is awesome. If you have poison rounds, for example, when you kill someone with it, the poison desenegrates their body.
Interactivity with all the other characters in the game is freakin' amazing. Think KOTOR (another Bioware masterpiece), except 1000x better. Every person you meet is detailed and interesting. Haha, you even get this weird fan at the Citadel that always wants to talk to you. It's interesting how that turns out. But anyway, facial expressions and emotions are expressed in a way never before done in a video game. It's awesome. You'll have to watch some videos or play it to truely appreciate it.
There's also some mini-games and such to toy around with, as well as many side missions. Bioware has some cool DLC ideos. They just released one called 'Bring Down the Sky'. It's a whole new mission, cinematic and all, where you have to land on this asteroid that has been hijacked by Bakarian slavers. I won't spoil too much, but it's fun and adds another 30 mins to the game. (In two play throughts, I've gotten 35 hours ... that's without doing many of the side missions).
This game is one of my favorite games of all time, if not THE. (Of course, D2 is my favorite online game :D), but this game is amazing, and truly epic.
I'd give it an 11/10, but like with any game there are some annoyance, like the item limit. Once you get a certain amount, you have to turn the ones you get into raw components. You're supposed to do that to unused items so you have room, but it's easy to forget. And for some reason if you didn't do it, even if you find a great item, it FORCES you to break it down, which is dumb. But this is easy to overlook as everything else is well ... awesome.
Mass Effect is fun, don't get me wrong, but I'm getting thoroughly sick of all of these sci-fi games lately. It seems like they can't manage to make a decent fantasy/medieval one (although I loved Oblivion, but that seems to be controversial.)

Yeah, but it doesn't matter if they make a shitty story in said medieval game. In this case, I'm referring to Oblivion.
I agree with you as far as there being too many sci-fi games ... there are so many sci-fi shooters out and coming out. But I make an exception for Mass Effect, because the story is freaking brilliant, and better than almost all the movies I've ever seen.
I played Mass Effect, done 4 playthroughs already, and it is fuckign awesome. The downside to it though that it is short, about 7 main quests and your done, optional quests are included but honestly, I would rather continue with the story. Other than that is a 10/10

That's funny. Cause I feel like there aren't nearly enough sci-fi games out there. Most of them these days typically take place in the early 21st century though and are FPS.
Mass Effect was a great sci-fi game. It had a really great story and I loved the gameplay (albeit they could've made it more challenging). And it wasn't even a first person shooter which was refreshing.
i've finished this game on all difficulties, got most achievements (like weapons expert) and reached lvl cap, It was fun and the story was entertaining but it was way too short
I can't see anything that bad about Crysis, you are going backwards on yourself like Crysis is a bad game and everyone thinks so. I don't see the difference between reading reviews or examining the opinion of a Diablo II forum.
We gotta make a change...
It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.

for me at least, Crysis was a disaster.
For me it was "FarCry was better"

Of all those four options you weren't able to use 3... You would just go around always stealted. The other 3 you just had to use sometimes to get over some rocks...
Rubbish. No one makes you use them. Same went for the binoculars in FarCry. If you feel they make the game too easy you could just stop using them. Makes the game much more interesting.
Quote from "milanv" »
they said you were able to choose the fighting styles. well, I wasn't. if you were to jump in a group of Koreans and start shooting at them, would you ever survive?
I am not sure what you mean by that. You can play stealthy, you can play open, but what you described is just idiocy.
I was just thinking of buying mass effect and read all the reviews and stuff and they all say that the game rocks and is one of the best RPGs ever... but we all know not to trust those reviews. for all we know they can be paid to write some good stuff about the game. remember Crysis? Well, I bought it (yes, you can slap me:) ) and the game SUCKED HORSE D**K). My friend says it's the best game ever, but you can guess how smart he is, or how he values a game
so, I wanted to hear some thoughts about Mass Effect from the real people and if it is actually worth buying...
and please, don't just say yes or no, write both the good stuff and the bad...
thanks in advance....
I've discussed this game at great lengths. Some here as well. But I wouldn't mind reiterating some it in order to convinced you to try this game. That's right. I'm advocating you play this game.
There are several things I loved about the game. One was the character customization. It's not like you can be really super detailed when creating your character, but at least you get to see your character constantly interact with others in cutscenes, unlike Oblivion where you can take all the time creating a face for your guy and it really makes no difference cause they'll never say a word throughout the whole game. But in Mass Effect, it's just great watching the character you create go through the game in these great cinematics. And if you work hard enough at it, you really can create a fairly unique looking character. Mine was hot. I sort of fell in love with her. It's better to be a female in that game because the actor who does the voice for her does a way better job than the guy actor.
You also get to create a bit of a psych profile as well as identify your place of origin. For each of these categories, there is one out of three choices you can make. Depending on your choices, there will be different side quests available as well as different dialogue when people talk to or about you. I kind of wished they had done a bit more with this feature though and tried to include more ways of your character reflecting her psych profile and origins in the game. But it's interesting enough to play through more than once and try your char on a different type of profile.
Aesthetic wise, I thought the game was magnificent. At first I thought the armor looked kind of lame, but once you learn more about the technology and combat in the game, I justifies more why everything looks the way it does. I thought it did anyway. The graphics are rather stunning. The different locations on the game look great, although every planet is pretty much identical except for that they change the color of the terrain and make the sky look different. But places like the Citadel, Feros, Noveria, they look really amazing and it gets you more into the game. This is good I think because there isn't a lot of fast travel options in the game. Such as with the Citadel (the main hub of the galaxy) where you have to take a lot of elevators and corridors to get to certain locations. But at least you can admire the scenery while taking the long way to places. I also really like the look of the weapons and the style of the tech and biotic combat. I guess you could compare biotics to the force in terms of what you can do with them. But biotics has no great mystical background. It's more like implants in the body that works with the brain and muscles to enhance strength and agility while allowing the user to manipulate the mass effect fields that most technology in the game is based on.
I even liked the film grain option that you could turn on and off. I don't know what made them even think of this, but you can turn on this grainy filter over everything and it makes everything appear more like it is done on film. It's pretty neat.
The combat is okay. I wished it was a bit more challenging. You may find it plenty challenging at first, but this is more due to the game's learning curve. Once you figure stuff out, it actually becomes very easy. There are some parts in the game that are genuinely challenging, and in a good way. But too many other parts of the game that were way too easy. I recommend tweaking the difficulty level even on your first time through. It will be tough at first, but in retrospect makes it all worthwhile.
The story is one of my favorites in a sci-fi RPG game. It's pretty epic in proportion, yet very typical in some aspects. But throughout the game you have a clear understanding of what you're trying to do and with each mission, why. So paying attention to dialogue as well as reading the codex entries is pretty important to appreciating and understanding the game's story. And not just the overall story that drives your character, but the background story that shapes the game's universe and gives it depth. There is a lot of history between all the races in the game which includes several animosities, hatreds, debt. The political backdrop was really interesting for me. I found myself really sympathizing with other races (especially the Volus) who weren't on the Citadel council, while understanding everyone's wariness of humans. So even when I was having issues with gameplay, I was still enjoying the game overall because it felt like everything had a purpose. The sidequests are really fun too, in some ways more fun than the mainquests.
The mainquests themselves, or the overall campaign is somewhat short. But if you're taking the time to do all the sidequests in between, you'll still get plenty of gameplay out of it. Plus, when you play it a second time through, you can do it with a different character class and psych profile and even make different decisions in the game as it is very open ended and provides different outcomes of missions based on your decisions.
