In fact I personally think there is merit / value about trying to evolve, to be better (while not bragging !!) than the others, different.
The issue though I feel is that in the case you are representing, they are NOT better, they just SAY they are and use bragging and disregard as a fake mask.
Exactly. The way to be perceived as "different" today is to showcase a giant bloody vagina or have a projection on the wall of a video of a guy in tights moving his feet on a piece of tape on a cement floor as a "human metronome"(no joke I saw that, it was hysterical).
It's literally a parody of itself at this point.
You know what would be REAL edgy? To walk into a gallery in NEW YORK and see a bunch of World of Warcraft paintings. That would blow my mind. And it will never happen lol.
On a side note, paintings of World of Warcraft would probably tell a lot more about the 21th century man than what you just described.
Indeed. After finally hashing out this rant I've had stored up for a good 3 years now I think I'll try and push the boundaries and make my professors hate me if you know what i mean.
Well i dont really know you Umpa, and im not that much into art, especially since i cant draw or paint. But i read the whole thing and i completely agree with you, i hardly ever find anything i perceive as "modern art" that i enjoy, it often seems to me like they are simply trying to push some boundaries simply for the sake of doing so, as you stated. I really liked your artwork, especially the first two, amazing!
Thanks Mast_M! And ya, thats mostly the art I have a problem with. However, there is a lot of good stuff out there.
But in general, I think that even a lot of of the good stuff is really in a transitional period right now. Illustration and graffiti and comic books are having a HUGE effect on what's being considered fine art these days. So, it's slowly accepting this kind of stuff, but barely.

a way to do nonsense and get paid for it.
The ironic part is that they shun people who do art to get paid but won't acknowledge that they do the same lol.

Read your post but not the responses. I have to agree with it a lot... I guess all I define art by is that it has a purpose or meaning conveyed through it, and that's what differs it from, say, graphic design.
I mean, take Ai Weiwei, he makes art as a way of expressing his distaste for the communist regime etc... and if your art doesn't fit into the 'contemporary/snooty' mold, more power to you. You'll have less competition, but you just have to prove there's a meaning and thought to your art.
On a related note, my GF did a visual arts degree, and most of her friends in that program either got a job outside of arts, or had rich enough parents that allowed them to continue to paint after school. As for my GF, she is running a business in the arts field (nicely enough!), but that's all I'll divulge, since she probably doesn't want me posting her life on a random forum haha.
But see, that's were I disagree. I don't think it has to "have meaning". People are really caught up in that. You can bull shit meaning in anything.
Graphic design stuff IS art. Why?
I just spent 4 months studying Gothic architecture as a part of the art history curriculum. There was no meaning to it. It was for functionality mostly(not completely true though, the design of the cathedrals and churches of the gothic era had tons of symbology in mind). But as a piece of art, it was not meant to have meaning. It was a nice looking structure that served a fundamental purpose as a church.
Likewise, the era that followed it was hugely important. All of the most revered works from the household name artists were usually just commissions from the church. This genre was usually History Painting.
They didn't paint it because they wanted to express their love for jesus. They did it because they were paid and told what to paint.
Now mind you, this does not go without exception either. DaVinci REALLY pushed the limits with his portrayal of overtly sexual features that were usually a bit homosexual in nature that seemed to have went unnoticed for some time.
Long story short, this idea of some art being more important than other forms of art is complete bullshit. The graphic designer is just as important as the painter. Why? Because the idea of importance is relative, subjective and an illusion.

Oh I agree with our last line about a designer being just as important as the art painter... I think some of the constraints and tasks for a graphic designer are much more complex than what an artist faces... and I also agree with the heavy level of BS in the meanings found in art lol... but what I'm saying is that if someone just drew a dragon, vs someone who drew a dragon but it had features that gave meaning or told something, shouldn't we hold that 2nd drawing in higher regard? Eg sort of like how a good movie uses camera angles to tell the stories or heighten characters' emotions... vs a movie that used a crane shot because they could.
It's basically why we have this notion of importance in the first place.
It's a very odd balancing act we find ourselves struggling with. While we know that art is in the eye of the beholder, we also know that we can readily identify what we think freakin' sucks.

Yeah, and what do you think about contemporary art in the future? Do you think it will change from its current state, maybe because of reasons like you had... (will we even call it contemporary lol?)
The internet really puts a ringer on this whole situation.
Technology is the defining force for art right now.
Because of the internet, we have MASSIVE OVER EXPOSURE to imagery. It's producing very chaotic work that seems to lack an adhesive direction both internally and externally in terms of a unified movement and theme that is really beginning to define it and create a theme of it's own.
But man...who knows. It's just a whole new ballgame for this stuff right now. I have no clue if we will even care about art history in 100 years.
After all, the idea of art history and art historians is literally only about 250 years old. Before that it wasn't even considered. So who knows, maybe in 100 years it won't even matter.

Totally agree. This whole modern art thing where people just paint nonsense and tell us we just don't understand it is bullshit.
Like this. What is this? Did the guy even paint anything, or did he just think to himself "Ooh, this is a polar bear in snow," or some shit. I wouldn't give him a nickel for that.
Bottom line: your stuff is awesome. And this is not:
My father told me that art can be anything. That it should invoke emotions and memories. From something as simple as a stone to some elaborate masterpiece. To judge and deem what is art is against what it truly is .
Funny, when I went in to get a painting framed the owner looked at the painting and asked why I would get this painting framed. It looked like a child did it. Once I said blue man group painted it on stage when i went to see them in Chicago there attitude to it changed
( thats not my image, I honestly do not have a photo of mine. it just sits on my wall at home to be looked at and admired. As art should be .
The painting to me brings up feeling of that vacation and how nice it was. Thats why its art to me. It seems like for art to be "great" to most critics it needs to be older then them or famous from something.
I personally enjoy evocotave elements in art I enjoy, and feel that the junk is now known as Modern Art is a travesty. If intention is so fundamental to art I don't understand how that intention needs to be described to observers in a paragraph below it. Not having much knowledge in the arts I don't know who actually determines if a piece deals with 'social or political issues' (is it the artist or is it an orginization of experts?) but shouldn't that idea be recognizable in the piece and why are political cartoons not fine art?
I like the idea that to be art mastery is needed, but it seeems that the mastery currently needed is not in the art production, but marketing or presentation or pandering or casuistry. Hopefully in as we peogress people will put money in what can be appreciated and the trash will die as an unsustainable practice.
I like the rant and the art (the good stuff)! And good luck on your work.

Playing a Wizard. Looking for Demon Hunters to play with.
It's ironic how little the "art world" understands about art. Art is defined as the creation/expressing of or the final result of something that is either emotionally or aesthetically engaging; pleasing to the senses or just anything that makes you think and feel. The people you refer to as the "art world" in your OP are known as "Hipsters", and if there's a single thing everyone in the world, across race and hate or country boundaries can agree on, it's that hipsters are raging fucking idiots who think themselves FAR more important than they actually are.
Just because something is created as an entertainment device does not mean that it cannot be art as well. Likewise, what is art to you may not be art to someone else, but it's still your responsibility as an art lover to respect that someone else may consider something art, and not to be condescending to them because you don't agree.
However people who say the blank canvases in Diablo Fan's post are art because someone told them it is and can in no way come to their own conclusion about WHY it's art are absolutely idiotic and are only saying so to fit in and seem more knowledgable than they really are. Draw your own conclusions about every piece of art you see, and don't fall into the crowd and claim something is art just because the million dollar collector says it is, and don't say something is not art because everyone else thinks it is and you want to be "different". It either effects you in some way or it doesn't. It's a personal and individual feeling.
My father told me that art can be anything. That it should invoke emotions and memories. From something as simple as a stone to some elaborate masterpiece. To judge and deem what is art is against what it truly is .

Please, please don't take offense but that's exactly something I would not consider art. For someone who doesn't have an emotional connection to it, it looks like a mess, and not much more.
But then again I do consider something like this art
So what's the defining difference between your picture and this that makes your not art(only in my personal opinion) and this art? I have no idea. lol
Err... Well... like they say. Art can be in the eye of the beholder.
