How much do you plan on spending? I've built the last few pc's I've owned and I have found out the hard way, intel extreme processors, top of the line graphics and liquid cooling are hardly necessary to achieve top gaming performance =)
Note... I'm a big fan of spending $ on the shit I want, cash & carry =)
Edit - I'd be more than happy to help you out if you need some good ideas.
I'm planning to spend about 3k, not including accessories like the monitor or input devices.
I'm pretty set on liquid cooling, not because I plan to OC to an extreme degree, but just because I'm really looking forward to the challenge, and to be 100% honest, I LOVE the way a nicely build, UV reactant liquid system looks ;).
After a lot of time researching benchmarks and general part feed back here's my general part list, not including all the little things like water components or anything. Let me know what you think!
Case: Corsair 650D
Mobo: Gigabyte G1 Sniper 2 (Expensive, but it's gaming benchmarks beat even the Rampage 3, and I love the heatsink style lol.)
CPU: i7 2600k (3.4ghz factory)
GPU: GTX 580 Classified (Not out yet, should be in the next month at the latest)
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB DDR3 1866 (Can't go wrong for $150 :P)
Everything else is just kinda irrelevant I guess, but yeah those are my base components!
.. Actually, this isn't off topic, it's how I've been passing my time!
thats a bad ass system.. Do you pref Intel over AMD? and...
I like the 580 its beast but i have 2 friends that have it and they said if they could they would have gone with the 6970 instead.. currently what i have and love it to

Thank you :). Sooner or later (likely later, like in two months or so..) I'll being making a thread about my system in the Off-Topic section to share it with you guys and post the progress of me building it :).
At the moment, I prefer Intel. AMD had some price/performance edge years back, but with Intel's latest CPUs there's really no competition. AMD's upcoming Bulldozer CPUs look really promising though, and just broke the world record for GHz, being over clocked under liquid hydrogen. So only time will tell if Ivy Bridge, or Bulldozer will come out on top in 2012.
After a lot of benchmark research, the 6000 series seems to preform better under super high resolutions, like Eyefinity, and may squeeze out 1 or 2 more FPS at 2560x1600 when comparing over clocked GTX vs 6000. The upcoming GTX 580 Classified looks like it might break that trend though. Also, generally the GTX 500 series runs a lot cooler under any type of cooling, and normally edges out 1-5 more FPS on most of the latest games under resolutions from 1080p-2560p.
In general, both will do the job with likely no noticeable difference in FPS.. It's preference really. Now, when you start talking about SLI vs Crossfire setups it gets a little more complicated, with some cards preforming better than others under certain tasks. Speaking of single cards though, they're very similar. I personally will always prefer a single powerhouse card over 2-4 working class cards because I tend to notice micro-stuttering, and it bugs the hell out of me :P.
Thing is with all these parts though, they're all coming to the end of their life. With the next gen CPUs coming out in Q4, and the next gen GPUs due out in Q1 2012, I kind wish D3 would get pushed back to Q1 so I can wait for these new parts to build my PC.. Selfish, I know :P.
I can't even put a TLDR.. It's a complicated topic X( lol

SC2, work, Dfans, life, wedding... omg I get married in 9 days.
Congrats!
I picked up Gears of War 3 to pass the time.
awesome, same here. Played gears multiplayer the first time tonight; The new Beast mode where you get to play as the horde; Very very fun! I think this will be a good appetizer before D3!

Actually, isn't that a great time to get a really good cost vs performance ratio? I mean if you don't feel the need to push FPS as high as possible in the latest shooter you can save quite a bit of money. Personally I'm still running with a AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ (~4 year old dual core processor) and it still keeps up. The only thing I've switched since then is the graphics card, from a 8800GTS to a 5770. It can run SC2 on high without a problem, but ultra stutters a wee bit. I don't think ultra would be a problem if I disabled windows aero though.
This would be very true if I were planning to run games at 1920x1080, since at the moment a Sandy Bridge i7 and GTX 580 can pretty much run any game with maxed settings with 40FPS+ at least. When you add the loads of extra pixels that comes with 2560x1600/1440 though, the current gen hardware begins to fall off the back of the 30FPS cliff unless you invest in a multi-GPU set up.
Chances are the upcoming 600 series will be extremely over priced at first, not to mention the higher end cards like the 680 or w/e prob won't come out until Q2 or Q3 anyway.. It's all kind making me rethink going with such a high res setup.. I'd love to compare 1920 vs 2560 side by side in person!

I've returned to playing Diablo 2. Trying a very specific Summoning build where I'll focus on a Clay Golem, backed up by Skeletal Magi, Curses and mercenaries. I'll basically play a de-buffer while the minions take care of business. Always wanted to try this sort of thing out haha.
