So. The highest resolutions for most games is 2560x1900
I'm probably going to get a new computer at the end of the year or a bit later and I'm thinking that I want one.
Anyone have a moniter that supports this res? Is it worth it?
How much harder is it on the computer to run so high? Twice as hard as a 1440x900 res? More?
Do they exist in 3D yet? Would 3D even benefit from high res?
Where can I get a good one? Most I've seen have been $1000+! Are they available for a lot cheaper elsewhere? Are they relatively new and going to go down in price soon?
My brother has a 23" Acer at 1920x1080 and it works pretty good like Kiwi said in most situations. But I just got a new comp and the monitor is a 30" and it's set at 2560x1600 and I think it blows my brothers out the water. They don't make 3D monitors that big yet because I remember looking for one. I think the biggest 3D monitor is a 23" or 24". I looked around for a 30" but there are none that size yet. Plus the cost for one would probably be astronomical.
When I bought the monitor I was going to get it off Newegg but then I went and checked the Dell website and they had a sale that day and I got it for $150 cheaper. My best advice would be if you find the monitor you really want; look around at more than one place that sells it because they always have deals.
The 2560x1600 res will make it look better, but only if you have the GPU to play it at max on 2560x1600 with >60FPS to get that i think you need a dual 6970 setup or at least a single 580, both go for around 500$. So it gets pricey. If you have a lower end gpu it will be harder to run games because the more pixels the more is demanded and you'll fall short making you actually reduce the quality of the graphics. Me personally I wouldn't get a 2560x1600 i'm getting a 2560x1440 because the 2560x1600's 16:10 Aspect ratio annoys me, I like 16:9 more i get a wider viewing. and those 2560x1440's usually go for 1k or less, so they are still very pricey. Ebay will usually have some refurbished ones, or ones with small red dots that aren't very visible when turned on. So you can always try there for a good deal.

-widescreen.
the only thing worth getting better is the quality/response time/refresh rate/size(24 or 27")
higher res isn't worth the cash yet.
