I'm just curious what people are using now. I looked up some threads with the search function but they were all over a year old and reviving one of them seemed like it'd be beyond :necro:.
First off, I'm not one to go download porn and mess with peer-to-peer stuff, so I don't have any big problems but my computer has had a few issues here and there since I got it 5 or 6 years ago.
I've always had McAfee on this computer and it sucks. I've had to supplement it with all kinds of other scanners for spyware and stuff.
Other things I've tried are:
Spybot Search and Destroy- rarely had it find problems but it's a handy extra scanner
Ad-Aware- same as Spybot
Spyware Doctor- nice to use from time to time since it can find/fix junk that McAfee will miss or identify but not remove.
AOL spyware protection- normally junk, but has been a handy scanner on a few occasions.
Advanced System Care- A recent love. It's a little over simplified but has done wonders for cleaning up my PC after 5+ years of clutter. My system ran noticeably smoother after running this one a week or two ago.
Also tried Norton but it sucked worse than McAfee in my opinion.
I've been considering switching McAfee with some other active anti-virus/firewall. I'd like something that wont slow down my system so much when it scans/updates. How are people liking AVG these days? Any other free ones out there that are good?
Hmm, I can't say I know much about what would be needed with Vista. I've got a PC running Vista but it's my completely offline, mainly entertainment computer, so I don't need to bother with any anti-virus/firewall, etc.
My computer that I need to run stuff on occasionally is using XP.
The only bad virus I got wouldn't even let me log on to my name. It was back with my XP compy. I just reformatted the hard drive.
I have Vista now and just have AVG. Haven't had absolutely anything yet and I'm close to a year now. The best protection against viruses is common sense, I think.

Which thankfully Vista provides for you with the allow/deny everything.
But yeah XP I used to get quite a bit of viruses. Had my Vista system 3 years now and no problems ever. Except lightning striking and frying my hard drive.
I guess I'm basically in the same situation as Daemaro. Vista, AVG, Ad-Aware. Though I think I should do a reformat soon, the computer bogs down a bit and has for a long time.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

I think I'm gonna go start up my computer and switch to AVG(currently on my fiancee's laptop).

I'm wondering, does anyone know any free email PGP?
PGP? Not sure I'm familiar with the abbreviation.
What about web-browsers. I've pretty much just stuck with Firefox for years, would Chrome or one of the others be more secure and better at blocking pop-ups? I don't have any problems with firefox aside from netflix pop-ups that always seem to get around it.

I'm running XP Home Edition and am protected with Avast, Spyware doctor and CCleaner. I know CCleaner doesn't protect but I put it up anyway.
Avast is for the serious stuff and is updated daily for free (I get updates like every 24-36 hours), Spyware Doctor is for the annoying little things, CCleaner to clean up with, and I also used PC Decrapifier, which is used to remove all those annoying demo programs that you get with new computers.

Well I made the switch from McAfee to AVG. It looks good so far. The scan did find some junk McAfee was missing or failing to remove. I haven't installed zonealarm yet for a firewall, but I've had the computer disconnected from the internet anyway, so it isn't any big rush. I'll probably add zone alarm today or tomorrow to get it back online.
As a side note, McAfee didn't want to uninstall, I had to do it in safe mode.

CCleaner is a nice tool to clear out temp files and cookies.

That's the only 3 things I've ever really used.
Basically if I had something those couldn't solve it was real bad.

Pretty much. I used Spybot back when I was running XP. NOD32 is really good if you want to dish out money for it.
I also use Malware Bytes, and may install Ad-Aware later, if I feel I need it.
Plus it's free, which is the best price.
Personally, I wouldn't suggest McAfee or Norton to my worst enemy, let alone a friend. o.O

Spy-bot
ad-aware
I believe there are more but cant remember the names.
