Start with a base color to paint the whole 'skin' of your character, assuming you've drawn a character. Make that it's own layer.
Add a new layer for highlights on the skin. Place this layer above the base skin layer.
Add another layer for special lighting if there is a unique lighting source.
Add another layer for the color of the clothing.
etc. etc.
if you're just doing black and white drawings, use of layers is pretty limited. It allows you to draw different poses, i suppose, and show/hide the layers depending on which pose you want displayed, or which tweak you want to show.
Layers are very useful, but yes it is easy to get carried away. Naming your layers is important so you don't get confused.
Some people say it's important to use layers. I agree that layers are nice to have. Very helpful at times. But keep in mind that some of the best artists out there don't even use them. You should try to avoid depending on them too much, as it will become very inconvenient and messy when you end up having 50+ layers. I'm speaking from experience. :] Lately, I've started drawing everything on the same layer, and it has worked out very well. It lets me finish faster.
I don't know any good artists that don't use layers. I'm not saying they aren't out there, I'm just saying I have never heard of any.
I have! I found this cool tutorial and the guy doesn't really use layers.
Agh I can't find it again, it might have been taken down. Well in his tutorial there was a demon, and he kept changing the position of the demon's hand several times by painting over it again because it was all in one layer.
If he'd used layers he wouldn't have had to keep painting over it. Therefore, layers are smarter.
Meh. To each their own. I think I would die without layers.
I agree.
Maybe not using layers makes you more of a badass, using layers is in fact way smarter. There's no real downside to them besides if you forget what layer your on. Which is a simple fix usually. Other than that layers pwn.
