So Julian Wilson told us that you guys are looking monetize Battle.Net in some way. Is that right?
Rob Pardo: Wow, that's an evil way of putting it. Julian's turning into a business guy on me. Here's the way I would put it. We're definitely not looking at turning Diablo into a subscription based game. It's clearly not an MMO, so it's not appropriate to do a business model like that. The way we approach all of our games now, is we come up with what we think is a great game, and then we wrap the appropriate business model around it. If that's just a box price, then that's that.
With Battle.Net we're definitely looking at possible different features that we might be able to do for additional money. We're not talking about Hellgate or anything like that. We're not going to tack things on. I think World of Warcraft is a great example to look at. We charge people if they want to switch servers or if they want name changes, things that aren't core to the game experience, they're really just optional things that some people want. It takes us some development work to do it, so it makes sense to charge for it. We would never do something like say to get the full game experience, you'll have to pay extra.
although curious about what those features could be. any ideas? also, is the charging is only going to be available for battle.net and there won't be anything like that for diablo 3?
As he said - migrating characters from one server to the other, changing character names, perhaps database maintenance for armory / guild support... But nothing that is core to the game itself obviously.
It does make me feel better. But it's interesting that he talks about what you won't be charged for, a little about what you might be charged for, and nothing about what you will for sure be charged for besides the base cost of the game.

That isn't the issue. The issue is that many people arguing FOR a p2p diablo 3 would actually PREFER core game functionalities to be monetized. These people are sheep.

Umm, "totally fair"?
Do you know what features he's talking about? No? Then don't be talking "fair" yet.
did u read it? lol
he said stuff like character transfer, name changes etc.
its not like theyre chargig you 3 dollars to your credit card everytime you die.

r u sure lol?
who in their right minds would ahppily shell out money.
i would definatley pay if it was p2p. i wouldnt like it, but i would
I would prefer no monthly fees, but I would more than gladly pay one-time fees for new content. Though Jay Willson explicitly said that they won't be adding new content (like they do with WoW), so that's out of the question (to my sadness). It's basically going to be the core game, one expansion at some point, and that's probably it. Second expansion if we're ultra lucky.
the only reason i'd live with a p2p Diablo 3 would be for regular content updates (monthly) and for a completely hack and lag free battle.net environment. Alltogether i'm pretty negative towards a single-player game that requires money to play to full level on multi-player (see Hellgate charging model).

Yeah just as me and some others tought.
There was a lot of complaining about this again People should wait and see the details before bursting into flames
how big the updates do you have in mind? I for one, wouldn't pay for it, simply because we'd get updates anyway without paying for it and I think that's just an excuse. ofc if we are guaranteed hack and lag free battle.net then I might consider it.
its hard to find balance in such issues to be honest. If they add too much, the ones playing single-player will have any right to yell and if the ones with single-player get the stuff for free, it would feel to the subscribers as if they're paying for those on single-player aswell.
I was thinking more of additional regions with more quests (that could get the single-players yell) or for PvP tournaments with extra rewards (as in titles mostly and maybe some gear).
That in addition to lag/hack free environments. I wasnt talking about each of something but all together.
Basically -- No P2P, and no microtransactions for actual things in the game

If so, AWESOME!
thats about what i wanted for battle.net 2.0. If the servers are better protected from hackers i'll be even happier.
It looks its only for changing servers or renaming your characters no imbalance stuff
people got too worked up after they heard money.
