Look don't compare Diablo 3 to HG:L.
1) HG:L is new game without background lore, made with today standart gaming industy idels which are high because of the carebear kiddies 360 graphic lovers :P.
2)They didn't have the support of investors for long period of development such as D3 have. they were rushed to released half made game as I recall. for lack of cash.
3)Fantasy>>>>s-f in today's popularity charts.
4)They HAD to make some different stuff than the formula of D3 or they would've been sued of copyright trespassing.
5)mmm what is more to say they made a very bad decision and made it 1st person view.
6)....prob more.
Yeah, I saw the Ign review for that game. (6.8 out of 10)
Phew, that could have easily been Diablo 3.
I don't know how you can make that statement. Hellgate was a completely different IP made by some of the Blizzard North folks. I'd be willing to bet a large sum of money that if Blizzard North were here today (as it was) and were developing D3 it would be just as good or better than what Blizzard is currently developing. I mean they obviously didn't just get lucky. Diablo 1 was a total success and they came back again with Diablo 2 and blew us all away again.
So yeah, I am very sad their studio is going under. Not as sad as I was the day Blizzard North ceased to exist though.

You must find the courage to step through this gate...
Let's be honest here people if Hellgate London wasn't called "Hellgate London" but was instead called "Diablo 3" and wasn't set in the future with blasters and other crap everyone on this forum would be playing it and saying how great it is.
Sorry, but Hell Gate: London, was obviously aimed at Diablo fans hungry for a continuation of Diablo. Does a story involving hell invading earth sound familiar to you?
The game had the exact same plot and very similar character classes as Diablo. (Templar holy Auras anyone?) The HUD in HG:L was actually a variation of the same HUD in Diablo.
Look at the health and mana bars in that pic and tell me thats not all about Diablo.
I know that the game isn't exactly a Diablo clone, it still has major differences, but it was still aimed at Diablo Fans. The fact still stands that making every waking moment color-less and/or mega gothic like in HG:L wont make Diablo a better game.

Well yeah, then they'd be under different circumstances, and would still be relatively influenced by Blizzard. No they didn't get lucky with D1 and D2, but times have changed. You can't apply the exact same formula from nearly a decade ago, hook it up to new technology and give it better graphics then call it a day. Sure you can be good at first, but you have to withstand the test of time. New scenarios folks?
Still, big plus to Blizzard North for developing Diablo to begin with.
Yes they would. The main reason for failiure of Hellgate London is the fact that it wasn't Diablo. People just not interested in exploring the Hellgate London Lore.
But alot of people saying on these very forums that they will play game with any kind of graphics as long as it's Diablo 3.
Just read people's posts, they will play almost anything if they see brand. That, my friend, is called brand equity.
I'm one of the few people who actually got past the "brand loyalist" attitude and just evaluate games objectively, but vast majority just want their "Diablo" franchise installment and they don't have much concern about the quality.
Diablo 3 doesn't look graphically much different from Titans quest, or WoW or GoW but there are people who think it's God's Gift to mankind just by virtue of being "Diablo"
I think they tried to capitalize off of the diablo market, the game was hyped, it was being made by the people from blizzard north, no d3 was coming or even knowned about at the time, it was smart business to capitalize off that. They couldn't do it, or they didnt try.
Then again i never though it would be anything like diablo in the beggining.
To this day I still can not fathom the ignorance of the masses who jumped to the insane conclusion that since some of the developers from D2 worked on Hellgate, henceforth Hellgate is D3.
Equally absurd is the idea that only the developers of D2 can make D3. May very well turn out that D3 is everything D2 should have been, but now 10x better. Nor is there any thought that quite possibly the D2 team could have made a worse clone of D3. Keep in mind that their original work was trashed, and the new team started from scratch. We have know way of knowing just how awfuly they could have made D3.
Besides, these are not great pieces of art now are they, they are just video games.
Wasn't Flagship studios working with EA too? If thats so, that's prolly the reason why HGL did bad in the first place. Either way, Much older Diablo players respect the old devs and I hope they find work ASAP... They really deserve more credit than most of the people here are giving them.
And SSJ5Broly makes a point. People brand names that are more familiar to them and their surroundings. Common sense actually.
The community was still to hopeful at that time, many of them were waiting for something to grab onto and call it d3. Even if hellgate was a goodgame it could never livee up to what we wante d3 to be, or what the diablo series was about., two diffrent series of games, two diffrent plots, really i could go on.

Yea It was aimed at diablo fans but It didn't deliver. Please next time quote my complete post not parts for your liking and save me rewriting X:
They were talented ppl which created diablo, I believe Diablo franchise is more theirs than Vivandi, and If they were working on d3 they wouldn't have butchered half as much as we see d3 doing now.
They were Diablo fans first and foremost not wow past players.
So they failed in their first game, trying to please the left d2 players without getting sued by blizzard or called a copycats.
They went the wrong track with s-f and 1st person view and we all know it's pure fail. plus london as background city is lousy concept.
And that adds so much to the topic... i just gave my view of hellgate and mythos and flagship wich was discussed
Okay um...

That is the most stupid thing ive ever seen on this forum any1 that has actually played hellgate would tell you different...
I for one went for the lifetime mebership and o god were i ripped off
Mythos was "ok" but not much more bland skills and nothing new...
So whatever u think people would not think the game was good if it had another name!
I think you wnt overkill on there. And what do you mean this is the stupidest thing you've seen on this forum, you just recently joined and your acting all veteran now? Unless you've been one of those lurkers and didn't contribute much except view count on threads
Is anyone actually surprised by this? HGL was abysmal... I only played the demo for all of 10 minutes but it was enough for anyone with half a brain to figure out it was complete rubbish. I hope some of them don't go crawling back to Blizzard with their tails between their legs and fuck up D3 in any way shape or form...
The looks of screen shots for Hellgate London actually feels more Diabl - esque as opposed to "WoW - esque" look of Diablo 3. I think it's the FPS perspective combined with modern weaponry and well... London is what made it suck, along with the reason from my previous post.

Their original work was not trashed. Here is some insight (that I stole from another thread) from a former Blizzard North employee who comments on what Blizzard Irvine has done with Diablo 3 on his blog (scroll down some).
"some of the concepts we were developing definitely looks like it made it through to the version of the game they displayed," he says.
He does go on, however, to state that they also made some decisions that counter what the original Diablo team would have done. In any case, D3 will have some influence from Blizz North and that comforts me.
Edit: Forgot to link the blog.

Doesn't comfort me at all... Blizzard Irvine is the ruiner of all things good.
this still makes me very sad, not to say the current d3 team did a bad job, but i wonder what d3 would have been if the old blizzard north people stayed.
