Well life (if it exists beyond Earth), is going to be very hard to find in the universe.
For one, it needs to be at a perfect distance from a star so it's not too hot or cold so that DNA isn't damaged in the unicellular organisms, and finding those planets is going to be hard.
Second, out of those planets, it needs to have a gas which the organisms can exchange and a way for the cells to get nutrients or something to get energy from so they can grow and then reproduce.
Then, it needs some kind of miracle so that life can al of suddenly spark into existance, which is also EXTREMELY unlikely.
So in the end, we are left with very few planets, making life extremely hard to find.

all you guys are making good points, but who says these beings need water or air to live? why dont they brethe in dirt or eat rocks? who says they need nutrients to live how do we know?
intergalaxy travel has been deemed impossible, if the big bang theory is true. apparently the universe is expanding at the speed of light, nothing can travel at the speed of light. now think of the universe as a balloon filling up at the speed of light, causing galaxys to move further and further apart at the speed of light.
so unless life is in the milky way, we will never know. anyway we will all be dead dec 12 2012 anyway.

great point with the air/water thing... honestly earth is the only place where we know of organisms needing water to exist and know of no other places with life... therefore we have no clue... and im on the other side of the 2012 thing... i think it will be the dawn of a new age of enlightenment or discovery (organisims on another planet) as opposed to catacalysmic apocalypse

and who says u need a gas? you could have a species that thrives 100% off of light and about that "miracle spark" for life to come into existance... it happened on earth.. it can, has and will happen elsewehre

There are mathematical and scientific reasons why they think that, and it would take too long to explain.

Hmm... I never thought of that... But if you think about it, we don't really know that light is the fastest since we know that if you throw a ball while running, the ball goes faster. But what happens if you run and turn on a flashlight?

I never got that Incan or Aztec or whatever it was theory. So is the world going to end on that date?

somehow they figured out light is the fastest thing, i dont know how but they did. i just did some research for my paper in comp science class and i dont feel like doing more. copy and paste where "experts" proved that living things need air/water.
some people classify viruses as "aliens" they follow all the the life processes except death

its said that in 2012 ther will be apocalypse or enter a new period of enlightenment... w/e... and my astronomy prof whose been doing this for 40 years... lawl at that... has taught us and shown us that space expands at its own pace... faster than light... light only travels so fast thru space because friction and other factors only allow it to travel a certain speed.
There is a blueprint (if you will) of a space/time travel process that involves exciting an atom until it becomes a quark gluon plasma, then stabilizing the quark until it is possible to pluck out a wormhole, the wormhole would consist of two particles that would be expanded to any size and then placed at two different points. You could slow down one,s time by introducing it to a extreme gravitational pull which would bring its time to an almost complete stop. In the end you would have one molecule at two different space times.
if you set up mirriors around the entire earth and put one beam of light on it, it would take less then a second for the beam of light to come back to the first mirror. fun fact
murderface ive heard of that before never looked into it though

its called a doppler effect. Waves at the front of a moving object compress while waves at the back expand. the light would still be traveling at the speed of light but at a different frequency.

eh the frequency would change very very little... b/c its still in the visible spectrum

Isn't it already very possibly we might of found a certain type of vegetation on phobos? (or atleast strong indications of it being there, like photos of green patches and such)
no we have though found a planet in the habitable zone of a star the planet is roughly the size of 4 jupiters and is covered in water... at least thats how it appears... they think that only about the top like 10 miles of water would be livable because much farther below the water would be under so much pressure that it would be ice... not frozen ice but the molelcular structure of ice because of the compacting pressure.
In the early 20th century a mathematic equation devised to calculate the amount of stars within the brink of visibility. Years later another scientist discovered a way to apply a more in depth result to calculate how many stars occupied the known universe (We know our visible range isn't the end of the universe, among various reasons, because we know we're not the center of the universe) . The number of stars reached nearly infinite. Based on that the chance for there NOT to be other intelligent life in the universe is astronomical.
