LOL?!!?!?!?! Take this for suspense. It's night in RL, and you're playing F.E.A.R in a really dark vent. You are heading toward this fan in the vent with no sides to turn off to. Once you reach the fan all of a sudden your vision blurs, and the fan with the wall moves back randomly. You continue toward it more, and this little alien thing runs across the vent all of a sudden. That's suspense IMO.
There is a list of problems with this effect:
- it's similar to DooM-style "enemy jumps out of nowhere";
- therefore, after a few times, it becomes repetetive and expected;
- it doesn't harm you and most of the special effects in that game mean absolutely nothing. There is a few places where you have to run somewhere but most of the time it's just a big fat illusion;
- in the end this all looks "oh, please, let's get on with this rubbish and let me SHOOT STUFF!!!"

I bet you didn't even play two whole lvls of F.E.A.R.
I played up to some level where some invisible ninja guys showed up... and then there were some guys in samurai-like armor... I also killed some robot... I don't even remember too well. I dropped somewhere around there. It was 4+ levels. I really don't attack games too much unless I played them.
Quote from "Chaosdragon94" »
Also, like I said, Extraction Point is a lot different then the other F.E.A.R game. I've seen both and played both, Extraction Point is way freakier.
Well, if it's freakier, I don't want it.
Quote from "Chaosdragon94" »
lol. I'm sorry if you don't think this is suspenseful and scary, but I do.
To be effective, it has to be real, it has to be harmful. When it's just special effects and you know it's nothing... bah.
This is similar to me and horror movies. I dislike 99% of them.
In that lvl, there are also aliens you had to fight without special effects in the environment, and the monsters can go invisible and hard to see so it is suspensful there, and they're around corners and stuff so you're like oh crap and it's scary to go around the next corner lol.
Blood everywhere on the floor too and you didn't expect the aliens because that's the first time you run into them... in that lvl.
I see where you're coming from, but I also dis-agree with a lot of it. But different opinions, I like both types of scaryness, you only like one. Oh well... I guess this subject is done? lol

To me, suspense (athmosphere) consists of a range of things:
- music/ambient, if there is any, sometimes silence would do. HL2 did a great job at this. Hollowness is the type I really respect. Also sci-fi motives, they go well with sci-fi games and FEAR is one;
- sound effects. Biggy. I don't need them to be high quality, I just need them to be, well, suspensefull. They should support what is happening on the screen. Like, if an alien dissapers with a funny weird alienish sound it's better if the alien goes in and out screaming all the time;
- light. The room in which we are fighting must not be dark. FEAR is very dark. You can't have light effects if you are walking with the flashlight on. It's not fun to shoot if it's dark. Darkness is boring and annoying. I don't like the whole concept of "there may be something sitting in the dark over there".
- design. This is a lot of things in general. Ranging from how do the actions of the alien are portrayed on top of your character to how he dies.
Quote from "Chaosdragon94" »

mm, the only reason why you would be scared of going further is because you are a bad player with the wrong difficulty and have trouble killing the aliens. Since I know I can kill anything in my way I'm usually very uncareful so I'm in "offensive" mode rather than the "defensive" mode where I'm crouching and hiding. And I playd FEAR on Extreme so don't go around saying I just played on the easy difficulty. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't slow, so it wasn't scary. It actually becomes somewhat scary if you try go defensive, but after a while you realise this isn't FarCry and it doesn't help you at all, so you just stand up and CHARGE!!!

Fear has crappy physics so the sound one dissapears. Every time I go past some bag there is a loud "thud". So there is all this thudding all the time. HL2 doesn't do that for some reason but it has great physics. The ambient/music in Fear is pretty boring and unnoticeable (see HL2). Sorry for mentioning HL2 too much, but heXen and HL are the few game that actually have an athmosphere without cheap horror effects.
Quote from "Chaosdragon94" »
But the light thing makes scary games less scary,
heXen never had light problems. Everything was always pretty bright. Didn't prevent it from being athmospheric, tho. Darkness is just an excuse for a game that tries to make itself scare. Darkness is outdated, it's not suspensful anymore.
Quote from "Chaosdragon94" »
so I guess you should just say you hate scary games because they're not your type, not because you're too scared to play em.
Where did I say that I'm scared to play anything? I would be happy if I was. I haven't been scared since Undying (and it's pretty lit up, mind you). You are the one who is scared of the dark here, not me. I'm annoyed by it, because it's a cheap compensation for lack of suspence and lack of design. heXen was lit up, Undying was pretty light, HL2 had some issues here and there but it was lit up most of the time. Fear is not a strategy game where you hide in the dark or something. You do that in soldier or thief games where it really makes sense. And there, it's a resource you take advatange of. That's the only point of darkness. Realism and hiding. It's like movies where they make it dark so you can't see what the heck is going on.

No it didn't. Fear is a dark game. Most of games are dark these days which is why you actually think it's lit up. And, "no lightning in the alien place" - I'm really not getting Extr Point. I guess those are some see-in-the-dark aliens.

(well, Single-Player is freaky, if you do Multi-Player offensive then you're screwed, so you HAVE to be defensive in them. Well it really depends... but defensive in important.
Defensive is for open areas only where lying or crouching or hiding actually counts. E.g., FarCry, Delta Force. In games like Fear, I really don't see the difference between standing and crouching. All it does is slow me down. So I jump around, lie (accuracy), shoot, jump, lie, shoot, whatever. Sometimes I just jump on top of people. My shotgun always runs out. In closed areas, I'm always offensive. Defensive is just pointless. Especially if you are kind of surrounded. So while you are crouching somewhere they go around and shoot you from behind. And you don't have any silent guns around so they always know where you are.
I don't see how you can play defensive in multiplayer with 20 people in one level. Do you mean 1v1 or something?

Well duh aliens are more interesting then clones Well I wouldn't really fine clones that un-interesting... but I wouldn't find them interesting. But aliens are definitly
It's kind of complicated... let me describe.
1. You come into a room. You lie down and crouch to somewhere. You spend some time crouching somewhere. You hear the soldier's voices. You can't know where they are, exactly. You come closer, and one of them says "I heard something". You freeze. You lie like that for a while. If no one comes out, you go forward. And so on... this is defensive playing. I find it kind of suspensful in pretty much any game where quiet play is allowed to a point. Only in F.E.A.R., it always got me killed. I play FarCry this way in some places.
2. You go into the same room. You walk around. Soldiers hear you. They walk toward you. They stop. You shoot, they continue walking until they find you, while you have already figured out where they were and hid behind a helpful crate. That's offensive. That's how I play F.E.A.R. and HL. Not suspensful.
3. You go into a half-destroyed rubble, where there are windows here and there and it's, like, 5 floors. There is a pack of combines (soldiers) here and there who start shooting at you. Top, bottom, whatever. You shoot them and go on. Suddenly, you get under heavy fire, and it takes you a while to figure out where it's coming from. It's coming from a strider (big shooting robot which you can't destroy without RPG). You get into a hideout. A few more combiners come out. You have to find a hideout which works for both. A damn robot thingy comes out and blinds you. You continue running and, if you are lucky, you don't get killed. You kill the combiners and go on, hiding from the strider thingy. You get on the next floor, and there are some broken parts which you have to climb to get farther, but they are exposed to the strider. You wait until the strider goes away on it's patrol, you climb the parts, and it's pretty easy to fall, the strider turns around, you sprint past all that and jump into the gap in the rubble which happens to be a staircase where the strider can't get to you. There is a bridge from which you can get to some other building where an RPG is available. You go on the bridge... the strider explodes it, you fall down in the heap of rubble, end up on the street in front of the strider. You have no time to think but there is something behind the strider and you just run between it's legs into an opening, where you are safe for a while...
Jeez, that came out long, sorry. And I'm not very descriptive. That's fast suspense, not really horror, but suspense, and that's HL2 I'm describing. There were a lot of parts where you really just run run run and shoot and not even think where the heck you are going and which weapon you are using and you switch to a crowbar just to get some supply box open and then switch to the arbalet which is really the wrong weapon but who cares and then you switch to gravity gun to get some car out of the way or to throw some piece of a building to block the strider's fire...

And I'm not scared of the dark really. Only way I would be scared of dark in games or RL is of course the darkness, along with creepy music, and knowing that there might be aliens around the next corner. If it's just creepy music, or just darkness then I would be scared. If it's light in a game and aliens around the corner I wouldn't. If it was RL with aliens around the corner I would... I played up to some level where some invisible ninja guys showed up... and then there were some guys in samurai-like armor... I also killed some robot... I don't even remember too well. I dropped somewhere around there. It was 4+ levels. I really don't attack games too much unless I played them.
Well, if it's freakier, I don't want it.
Oh well... I guess this subject is done? lol

It let's you play all sorts of games basically. I haven't upgraded my account yet, and so I've just been playing the free games, but you can browse many of the games they have there and see if it's something worth your time and/or money.
Siaynoq's Playthroughs
To me, suspense (athmosphere) consists of a range of things:
- music/ambient, if there is any, sometimes silence would do. HL2 did a great job at this. Hollowness is the type I really respect. Also sci-fi motives, they go well with sci-fi games and FEAR is one;
- sound effects. Biggy. I don't need them to be high quality, I just need them to be, well, suspensefull. They should support what is happening on the screen. Like, if an alien dissapers with a funny weird alienish sound it's better if the alien goes in and out screaming all the time;
Ranging from how do the actions of the alien are portrayed on top of your character to how he dies.
mm, the only reason why you would be scared of going further is because you are a bad player with the wrong difficulty and have trouble killing the aliens.
I'll probably be like "finally something more interesting than those clones".
Depends on yourself. I'm bored.
"Cards and flowers on your window, your friends all plead for you to stay,
sometimes beginnings aren't so simple, sometimes goodbye's the only way."
Huh :confused: yes I did.
The other 3 you listed F.E.A.R (extraction point) has. But these two I'm not sure.
But the light thing makes scary games less scary, so I guess you should just say you hate scary games because they're not your type, not because you're too scared to play em.
But for the light, F.E.A.R had this in lots of rooms. F.E.A.R Extraction Point and the other one both did. I'm not sure how much, but they both did. But no lightning in the alien place really, just a tiny bit and only in small seperate rooms in the big room.
I forget in F.E.A.R how your character dies. Maybe that's cause I never died. And I don't know what you mean by the first thing of actions. I know you aren't talking about those two specfically though, because those two are both very minor ones. I can't say much for actions. I didn't play enough F.E.A.R EP, it was only a demo
That's rude! I'm not a bad player It's still freaky for me though, but I just pwn them. And they're invisible so that helps the freakyness. The aliens are always invisible, but it's only slighty invisible. It's like faded out, not 100% invisible. So that helps the freakyness, it's really hard to notice them till they attack you. I'm always in defensive though. I can kill everything, but I'm in defensive cause it's freaky (well, Single-Player is freaky, if you do Multi-Player offensive then you're screwed, so you HAVE to be defensive in them. Well it really depends... but defensive in important.) BTW slow isn't as suspensefull as fast scary. You're confusing me. But, no FPS are slow... so why are you saying that D:
Well duh aliens are more interesting then clones Well I wouldn't really fine clones that un-interesting... but I wouldn't find them interesting. But aliens are definitly
It's a damn pain quoting seperate parts. Is there any REALLY easy way?
P.S. - Sorry for the little bit of spelling errors and some parts that may not make sense. It's just the whole typing box was really cluttered plus there was music on for half the typing and it's hot in my room, so all these factors help the errors and the parts that don't make sense. But I'm not going to go around changing all of it... if you don't quite get something just say

It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes.
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
and let's change the way we treat each other.
You see the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do
what we gotta do, to survive.

Then what do you mean by: "I didn't play enough F.E.A.R EP, it was only a demo :D". Demo doesn't count.
Sorry for mentioning HL2 too much, but heXen and HL are the few game that actually have an athmosphere without cheap horror effects.
heXen never had light problems. Everything was always pretty bright. Didn't prevent it from being athmospheric, tho. Darkness is just an excuse for a game that tries to make itself scare. Darkness is outdated, it's not suspensful anymore.
He dies the usual way. What diff are you playing on? Playing without dying is boring. What do you mean "first thing of actions"? And those two are very big for me, if they are not, what is?
Well, that really doesn't go together for me. I think you are just scared of the dark or something. But the method of "there is something there" is a very outdated method which is why it doesn't work for me. Also, invisible enemies like that were in Quake 3 and I didn't find it too freaky... but I never saw the aliens... I really wish you would stop talking about Extr Point. Cause i'm talking about FEAR.
Yeah, something with CTRL, but I have no idea.

I found C&C and everything in that area annoying...
D2 is so boring I never even finished it.

Loki is hack n' slash right? What other forum? And who the hell is Alan Parson...
A demo is pretty much a full lvl though. It counts a bit. But like I said "I didn't play enough"
I don't even know why we are debating about F.E.A.R since we haven't even played more then one lvl lol. Well it's fun though
I don't really remember F.E.A.R EP sound, but I liked it
Lol :rolleyes: that's the funniest thing I've heard all day. No offense or anything...
I never said that you were scared to play anything.
Also, if there was creppy music along with darkness but I knew for a fact there were no aliens in the game, I probably wouldn't be scared.
Was it suppose to be? :rolleyes:
Second funniest thing I've heard all day :rolleyes:
Like I said, I played both of the games. And it was recent so I bet I would have a better memory. There was quite a lot of lighting. Especially in the original game. EP has less lighting, but still a decent amount. Or it wasn't really light but not really dark... like, not pitch black but only because lots of blue or red lights are lighting up the room Also, yeh there isn't really any lighting in the room. But there are like 4 booths in the corners of the room that have lights inside them that light up the main room a bit. Hard to explain...
Oh... I played on easy lol. Playing without dying isn't boring to me. It just makes things more anoyying D: I like playing on Easy, then Medium, THEN Hard/Extreme or whatever. "first thing of actions" what I ment by that was the first thing you listed about the actions. I knew you might not get that part I don't blame you. And how could the two things be that big to you? D: You can't really see your dude die anyways, and that's death not action really so the action of death... doesn't go well I like the actions of... how your guy shoots or holds weapons or jumps or pulls a lever or something... thought not many games have something for that. I wish games showed you pulling something or picking up something. I saw one game that was like that, but I forget what game it was.
What are you talking about for the method thing? Quake 4... I played that game, graphics were pretty sweet, multi-player was pretty gay I didn't like the style and the speed of it. And how long it took to kill...
EP is Fear... so, so am I
I've done enough typing and reading this post, I think I'll respond to this tomorrow or something...
