PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Just read this article, and apparently they seem to be going for a blend between free play and p2p. I think what he's saying is that insead of releasing big expansions with months in between, they'll get people to subscribe in order to get new content.
So not only are they removing the differences between RPG's and FPS's, but they're also erasing the lines between MMO's and non-MMO's. Interesting.

I like how it all sounds, i hope it will work though.
But one thing is for sure, it will be interesting and then to think about a possible D3 competition, hmm i like.
I'm thinking more WoW competition. I'm serious, if this game proves to be great, I am fairly sure that I will stop playing WoW and switch over, because there's no way I'm paying for two subscriptions a month.
But I like what I've read so far, and right ow I'm hoping that Hellgate will take its time to come out so that I might grow bored of WoW before it is released

i dont really like the way its going. "free single player, pay 2 play multiplayer". Nah, pay 2 play should work only on mmo's. Singleplayer games should remain as Diablo was if there's going to be a multiplayer. Cause that would make people (me included i think) feel arsed and not play it multiplayer if it wouldnt make me not buy it at all. I can finance even 2 mmo's at once, but singleplayer games that you have to pay to play multiplayer arent that good. I hope the market wont move that way or i wont follow.

Aw, great, now I will definitely not be playing that game...

Which you don't have to, multiplayer is free.
World of Warcraft: Montly subscription for new content and paying for new expansions with massive content.
Guild Wars: No montly subscriptions, but no content patches, however you still pay for new content through expansions.
Hellgate: No montly subscription and you do not get content patches; montly subscitpion and you do.
In the end, all games that offer new content also require you to pay for it, Hellgate is just taking a different route this time, and I think it might work. You don't want new content, you don't have to get it, just don't pay.

As stated, you can play it for free. What does make me mad is that there is no LAN feature included. That sucks.

you are forced to, as most will get them. Plus is it even possible to play online without making a subscription? Havent checked on it so its a question since i dont really know. Still its not a path i'm willing to follow. Diablo 2 had some minor content patches and was still free. And the patches also include bugfixes. Will we get the bugfixing patches for free?

It has been stated that people not subscriing will get some features. Let me see if I can find it again...
- Free Play-
- Does have customer support but it isn’t 24/7 premium customer support. Being ‘just an artist’ I don’t know all the specifics here.
- Can join guilds but can’t found a guild or use guild officer functions.
- Can play with elite players in all areas of the game that come with the shipped game but not in new areas added post launch.
- Can not use ‘elite’ items. It should be noted that elite items are not more powerful/unbalanced items but rather have flashier appearances or simply new items that still fit in the overall balance scheme.
- Includes patching/balance updates. (in case that’s not obvious)
- On the same secure servers as ‘elite’ players.
I take it that patching/balance updates include bug fixes. It wouldn't make sense to me otherwise, becuase bug fixing is removing a defect, not adding an extra.
EDIT: And for all of you FPS lovers out there that hate Hellgate for their measily attempts at a FPS play-style, here's what I found regarding the Hunter. http://hellgate.incgamers.com/wiki/index.php/Hunter
Bill Roper talked more about the design theories behind the faction.
"From the beginning we wanted a faction that represented the bleeding-edge of our near-future world's technology. We also wanted to push the first-person perspective element of the engine, and the Hunter's emphasis on FPS game play mechanics does just that. Although the core role-playing mechanics of the game do not change for The Hunter, he does not utilize the auto-locking and soft-targeting that Templar and Cabalists have.
Instead, there is an emphasis placed on player skills, from their ability to aim to tactics and strategies common to FPS games. The great response from first-person shooter players that have tried out the Hunter is very encouraging and makes us confident that we'll be bringing some new players into the realm of role-playing games."

Eh, the more I stare at this game the more unimpressed I become, it's so hard to believe some of the creators of Diablo put together Hellgate. I'd expect a lot more.
The game over all seems like it will be a success, but in my eyes it's missing something I can't quite explain and it's a little too flashy plastic looking for my taste. Perhaps I'm comparing it to the Diablo games too much, how perfected and polished.
now thats interesting indeed. I still have the feeling that once we start playing online we'll be somehow "forced" to pay. We play those games for the items and to improve the characters mostly, dont we? I mean, otherwise we could just play single player. And making the elite items or what they're called unavailiable (not to mention different regions) its even worse than that (Pretty much what happened in WoW with Burning Crusade and everyone rushed to occuse Blizzard of "shutting out" everyone that wouldnt buy the expansion).
Some good pro and contra points, idk i think we have to play and see how it will work out and i'm hoping they wont abuse the system (cause horse armor for Oblivion wasnt exactly fair either)
Horse armor was a free mod for oblivion. You guys should check out torrentspy.

Horse armor was the only patch I never downloaded. It seemed utterly pointless. And I never really rode the horses anyway. Except Shadowmere. But he just sort of disappeared one day.

They claim that the extra items are just visually different and won't be on a new level, but I do wonder. More content is almost guaranteed to mean more challenging, and then you might be in need of more powerful gear.
But, that shouldn't be a huge problem. PvP will only be available to subscribers, so any competition in that manner will be be between players that have complete access. Yet it's hardly fun for a free player to run around and kill monsters at half the speed of a subscriber when it comes to PvE

Well, you can download Oblivion, Shivering Isles and all packs for it from torrentspy. Torrentspy is illegal.
The problem is, Hellgate's policy goes to multiplayer, multiplayer is not piratable.
One of the main reasons why they don't support LAN in the game. Which doesn't really bother me, since we can just use their servers for free and play with anyone in the world (Hellgate will not be separated into America/Europe servers. Asia may be, but that's because of other reasons).
The only problem witht that is that mods will have been struck a severe blow, because game-changing mods will have to be limited to Singleplayer only, unless someone manages to mod together a multiplayer function.

Like a cat, tied to a stick
half the games for ps3 are fps
half the games for xbox 360
[dont care much for consoles though]
and i dont even know how many fps there are for computer >_>

and id have shit my pants when i saw this guy running down the tunnel to hack my head off

And we already went over the debate of whether or not Hellgate is an FPS or not, and I think the only way we'll get an answer is if we play the game.

A.H after hellgate

Actually you could download the horse armor mod from legal sites as well for free.
I give it a few months after release until someone finds a way to run their own servers.
