Part of my game design team, including myself, is working on a board game that will clash ideas similar to those in RISK and Magic: The Gathering. After doing most of the conceptualization, we are now in the alpha/prototyping phase of the board game's development. And since I'm the creative director, I've started producing cards concepts/prototypes!

I'm pretty excited--I believe we are really onto something great with this project. More info and teasers to come!

Tonight's is the first card face concept, going back to the Bloodmage theme:

These cards look really sweet so far man, out of curiosity, is what we see on the card face's at the moment what they're going to look like later on?

Either way they look pretty mad.
Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."

    Thanks!

It's still very early in the game's development, and I've only started producing concepts and prototypes to compare to one another, so it's really hard to say at this point.
That said, I can say that the card layout I shared was the best of three concepts I created yesterday. If we keep the layout, the details may change, such as the border graphics, fonts, and potentially a few other things, but overall I really prefer the large portrait, simple description, and sub-description elements to these cards. We of course want to make our cards similarly appealing and efficient to popular trading card game cards, but drastically tailored to meet our needs with our game's completely different (and unique, as far as I'm aware) mechanics.

Today, I printed, laminated, and finished several card prototypes using the card concepts from the past few days. I gained several new fans with them, all of whom were current/former advanced Magic:TG players.
    One step at a time.

While I really wanted to work on some card graphics tonight and share one, I couldn't find the time or energy due to day-time work. So here are some shoes instead:

Hey, do you have a website or Youtube channel etc. where I could see your progress doing this game and ofcourse that phenomenal artwork of yours? :)

If not, do you have any plans making one?

    Good question, and thanks!

I have an art blog I keep updated (http://maldenb.wordpress.com/), but that is mostly for my Project 365.

We will be establishing a name for our board game soon, as well as selecting a team name to officially go by. I have plans for creating a team website soon after so that fans may follow our progress. I will be sure to bring this up at our next meeting!

I decided that I didn't like the first one, so I redid the Bleed Demons card's graphic. The idea of the previous one may be used in another card in the future.

ooh an online version would be cool, so people can play others all over the world.

I have a special request for you when you have time, so there's no rush. I'm looking for an awesome 1920 x 1080 wallpaper for my brand new Toshiba Qosmio that I received Friday. It was downgraded to Windows 7 for various purposes.

A real nice scorpion wallpaper that kind of has the same feel as my profile pic (I think it's still there. I'll look.), not to be confused with my avatar.

It's not there, but I did rediscover this.

    Pity the Fool, I will!

I'll look on Google real quick.

    FOUND IT!!

Something similar to that in your art style would be kick ass for a wall paper. If you think of something even better, please don't hesitate to share.

You got it. If I don't reveal another card tomorrow, I'll draw up a wallpaper for you (and anyone else who wants it). Otherwise, soon!

Truth is, I never played MTG. I stopped doing the trading card thing after the original 151 Pokemon cards. However, I somehow got my hands on a bunch of cards over the years and used to look at the art for inspiration.

I bought my first MTG card pack the other day. It was pretty exciting, and I got several intriguing cards, although the rest weren't as appealing to me. A handful of friends plan on coming over soon to teach me and have a night of playing MTG. Should be fun!

I can't give out any real details yet, but we do have the majority of it established. We are now working on the small details that won't impact the mechanics of the game, such as which colored dice to use and what glass pebbles to choose.
We are not messing around; this game is going to be incredible.

Since I have about a hundred card graphics to make, I have convinced several artist friends to help me produce some sick, unique, morbid graphics. For every one card you see here, there is at least another one already finished. Once my friends start churning out their graphics, that number will jump.

Tonight's is one I made this morning, in which the graphic took me around 2 1/2 hours to create due to tedious tweaking and redoing. This one is a utility card that allows Bloodmage class players to regain 5 Blood Orbs, a major boon to have when low on life because of being attacked or playing too many Blood Magic cards.

Tonight's is a new kind of card, this time a Revenant class card. I also redid the backgrounds for all the cards in the same style as this one (but different colors and minor variations per card type). The Revenant specializes in cursing players/summons, taking over summons, stealing cards, and being an overall jerk.

I will try to start doing more traditional illustrations. I've just been putting a lot of time into making cards recently and have been scolded by my girlfriend for it!

I have gained the help of several artist friends to create the 100+ cards. One friend came up with the idea for this latest card and I spent a couple hours turning it into digital art:

    Nice, mbease.
Can we know more about this game, or is it still a big secret?
