Instead of petitioning for Blizzard to go back and change art, textures and dungeons to give them a darker feel, a compromise might be more influential. Complaining about it is probably frustrating them because of the numerous artwork direction changes in the past, and has little hope of changing any direction whatsoever. Blizzard has obviously heard the community outcry and has stated their standpoint on the artwork (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/02/diablo-iii-art-direction/). To me, the community who wants a change has two options now:
Come to a compromise which enables those who like the graphics to keep them, and those who do not to have a way to change the look (Please see below).
Accept things the way they are and move on.
So I propose the following:
Why not request / change your petition for an option that is essentially a combination of a a grain filter, brightness adjustment, contrast adjustment, or perhaps politely ask Blizzard to write you guys a HLSL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Level_Shader_Language) Shader you can turn off and on at your will?
This would not be a solution for the "smiley griffin" or lack of polygons in some of the models and architecture (which is probably why Blizzard is hiring a "*3D Environment Artist" - http://www.blizzard.com/us/jobopp/), but it would at least give you the ambiance you want or desire. This would also have the effect of making you not focus so hard on the detail -- thus not noticing the smiley griffin
Hopefully taking this approach will get everybody what they want!
Comments / Feedback are welcome.
Edit: Blizzard "stated" their standpoint on the graphics. Thanks Ivaron.
I really feel like blizzard is going to make it how they want
which kinda sucks but is how it should be imo
it's their baby, let them raise it how they want
I don't think Blizzard will let us down. They've never let me down. In fact, in the months before the real Diablo 2 release, I kept thinking to myself, "How can they make this virtually perfect game better?". It wasn't until I had played Diablo 2 that I realized how imperfect Diablo was, and how much Blizzard really is able to top almost any previous game no matter how big of a feat that is.
Blizzard has thought about a new addition to the series for 8 years, on the other hand we have people who's opinions were formulated within a few days after the announcement. Blizz FTW.
