I've made the same post on the official forums, but i thought i could get more constructive feedback in here

Since I'm always up for trying different builds, I was looking into a damage over time-based build.
The problem is, I don't know how DOTs scale or not scale with different attack speeds.
I'll give 2 examples of numbers, to show you how I think the DOTs work. (i'll take fictive numbers, just to make the calculations easy)

INTRODUCTION based on normal attacks

for both examples the Damage (displayed in the character screen) is the same: 20 000
as far as I'm not mistaken this number is your avarage damage per second (DPS)

gearset 1 has a lot of attack speed, resulting in 2 attacks per second (APS):

20 000 DPS / 2attacks per second = 10 000 avarage damage per attack (DPA)

If i'm not mistaken, DPA is the same as weapon damage.

this results in for example: flaming dart:
does 180% weapon damage => 1,8 x 10 000 DPA = 18 000 DPA => 18 000 DPA x 2 APS = 36 000 DPS

if we do the same calculations for gearset 2, which has low attackspeed, let's say only 1 APS:

APPLIED TO DOTS(ill be using the same damage and attack per second as in the previous examples)

using locust swarm:

360% weapon damageas poisonover 8 secondsfast weapon gearset 1:

3,6 x 10 000 (weapon dmg) = 36 000 damage over 8 seconds=> 36 000 / 8 = 4 000 DPS

slow weapon gearset 2:

3,6 x 20 000 (weapon dmg) = 72 000 damage over 8 seconds=> 72 000 / 8 = 8 000 DPS

CONCLUSIONif using normal attacks, you DPS isn't dependant on the attackspeed of your items

if you're using DOTS a slower weapon is better

Hope there is someone who can verify this, or say what I did wrong in my calculation.

thanks in advance

ps: sorry for the wall of text, I tried to keep it as clean as possible
