I think the wizard will be best just due to the runed teleport that basically acts as d2 teleport. Even though the game isn't centered around killing boss mobs over and over, I feel like it will still be beneficial to have to have the ability to teleport around looking for rare mobs for loot. Also the fact that you can play them as a glass cannon allows them to kill things faster than other classes would.
I think it'll be the monk. Mainly because in a party you could basically make yourself a aura / healer monk, wear all MF or GF, and just play support. In doing this you would get some pretty high MF/GF rates, and still not burden the group by wearing said items. Honestly, I think its one of the few characters that could get away with wearing a lot and not burdening a group.
Surprised at the pole. I thought WD would get a lot more votes. I see it end game being one of the best solo inferno farmers. It's not wiz dominates all anymore, since getting the best loot is going to be doing dungeon runs and kill monsters/rares. I think with the right items the witch doctor is going to tear monsters up and have an easy time doing it too. A wizard might have a tougher time and require more brain power to actually do dungeon runs.
In terms of items being place holder I will still place my bets on a barbarian to win.
With skills like HotA tuned with birthright and a high crit chance. Let's not forget Threatening shout will also add a higher chance for monsters to drop loot. All and all with more chance for each mob to drop a % more treasure then even if it cannot keep up with a wizard kill rate there is always that chance you are finding more loot per kill without having to go look for it.
I really think that it will be a ranged char again. I simply cant think of a way to get the dmg mf and surviveability for a melee char to be competitive against a ranged char that focuses completely on dmg and mf.
I mean i cant know it for sure but i think ranged chars can simply try to avoid being hit so they dont have to waste stats on defensive abilities.
I picked the wizard. It was the best one in D2 for the longest time up until all the hammerdins took control. So it would kinda make sense that yet again, they would be in this one. I've been hearing that witch doctors are kinda beastly right now to. I guess they have a chance at being it. But I haven't played at all and been trying to keep any spoilers under wraps by not reading up to much on this, so I could be way wrong.
Me as well think that melee would have a hard problem, but chars like WD who has pets to help them against taking damage would seem like a better option for MF stacking. I always favored Wizard though, hence the difference of D2 and D3 is a bit unlcear for me atm.
I think it will be the WD. MF characters mustn't rely on gear. Therefore you either got WD or Wizard. As I don't know much about both of them (not playing beta or even reading about the game since I just can't wait for it ) I expect the WD as someone new who might be superior. I am not comparing the classes like :
sorc (D2) wizard (D3) = will it be the same ?
I think more about the fact that you got classes which don't depend on items and still do fine.
I think the Wiz will get the edge on this one. My reasoning is as follows:
1) I think being ranged will give you a slight edge with MFing. As some others have stated it is going to be hard to try to stack MF and stats to help your survivability. Being ranged you have more chance of avoiding damage all together, so it isn't as much of an issue. Which leaves us with WD, Sorc and the DH
2) Mobility/Killing speed. Due to the point above, mobility is going to be essential to a character trying to maximise his/her MF potential. It's in this regard I think the Wiz has a slight edge over the other two ranged characters. Teleport is nifty obviously, but also skills like slow time could be invaluable in higher difficulties. They also seem to (at the moment) have a pretty good damage output from what I've seen.
Of course all of this is pure speculation and I also don't have access to the Beta. I do however feel that every character will be better off MFing in a group of some kind. The drop rates are meant to be the same individually but due to the increased killing speed of working in a group you are more likely to get the drops you want.
