In the books The sin wars, The church of the light and the other were destoried, and the aftermath of that was for everyone to forget, all but Mendeln who went off to preach the way of the balance, How come her was never talked about anywere else? has it not been said somewhere?
When Richard Knaak wrote the Sin War Trilogy he rewrote large portions of the Diablo lore, and according to Blizzard, what he wrote is more canonical than the games. The games came out first and Mendeln does not appear in the first two games.
He could appear in Diablo III is some way, but to give a short answer, no he does not appear in any larger capacity out outside of the Sin War Trilogy, just like many others mentioned in the book. Such as the servants of the three, Lucion, and pretty much every angel except Tyrael and Inarius.

Xiansai is the name of an island. Few information is given about it prior to D3, not even it's name. It's name was given in D3.
This thread is for discussing lore and previous events, not discussing new stuff and speculating about stuff in D3.

Um... it started with the beginning of time? Since time immemorial? Before we even started to record history? I haven't quite yet got a chance to look at either the Angel's or Demon's record books though, so I can't tell you when they started recording their own history, but I imagine it would have began an incomprehensible amount of time ago.
This is by no means accurate, but it's the closest thing we got in circulation. SOmeone should bloody update/edit this thing. It's hell old, and not to mention inconsistent.
Aeons ago The Beginning: The Great Conflict also begins. -990 Izual attacks Hellforge and falls to the dark hordes of chaos. -985 The dark demon blade Shadowfang is created. -490 The rise of Man. -480 The Sin War begins. -40 Inarius descends to the mortal realm and begins to construct his cathedral. -30 Inarius lays siege to and destroys the infernal temple of Mephisto. -25 The forces of Mephisto defeat Inarius and his followers, laying waste to the cathedral and surrounding countryside. -10 The mage-clans of the East begin to form. 1 The Vizjerei become the largest and most powerful of the clans. It's bordering on impossible to try and understand it by ourselves but you do have a point, its about time we had it figured out.
I could come up with all the information we do have and the inconsistencies it has in about a day or two.
What I need is E-mail of someone important, preferably Metzen, so that we could ask him to settle this.

- Everything you ever wanted to know about the lore of Diablo and never knew where to look (In construction).
I agree, a (almost) complete, detailed, concise, and exact time line of all the events from the beginning, right up to the start of D3. This sort of thing is very interesting to me, and I am sure lots of others too.
If there was a petition to get a time line I would sign it, without question. Screw complaining about the art (which companies seldom listen to it seeems) I want to know what year Leoric came to Tristram in. What year did Izual assault the Hellforge, how long was it between Leoric coming to Tristram and him going mad.
Much rather discuss that than why is there that green stuff everywhere.

As said by myself, and several others, present in Tristram are various military out posts build by king Leoric. Also there are several other villages which are mentioned by Ogden in d1, and some other NPCs.
There is also a castle somewhere too.

The evil did attack others. It just started with Tristram because that is where the Cathedral was. The Cathedral that stands over the place where Diablo's soulstone rested for 2 centuries.
Also other evil attacked the other villages as well, Ogden says some black riders had been attack villages nearby Tristram.

While Goat men appear in all 3 games, the goat men from 1 and 2 are not the same ones as the ones from 3.

D1 and D2 goats are the same. It says they are Baal minions and come from Hell.
D3 goats are said to be members of the Umbaru clan who were mutated in experiments. That is the clan the Witch Doctor is from.
Kinda hard to see the all as the same goats.

It is believed that to earn their powers they once held mock wars in Hell for the entertainment of the Three Brothers
D1 and D2 Goat men are in Hell, then they come to the mortal Realm. Sure it says believed, but it also says in Hell, meaning they at some point have to be in Hell.
According to ancient carvings that I have succeeded in translating, the khazra were originally human, part of the umbaru race found in the thick Torajan jungles in the Teganze region of the eastern continent.
D3 goat men were clerly human at one point.
I find it hard to see how one set of goatmen who have always been goatmen and were once in Hell then came to sanctuary are the same as another set of goatmen who were human at one point living on sanctuary and were later made into goatmen, and never once set foot in Hell.
I do not deny that Baal could have had a hand in making the d3 goatmen, I just find it almost impossible for them to be the same ones from d1/d2, based on what is written about them. And from what I have seen there is little to no contradicting going on here.

Of course new lore is more canonical that old lore. The point is, the new lore doesn't actually contradict the old lore.

There's a lot to read, lol, but thats what you're looking for.
But the basic answer is that Tristram is where Diablo was imprisoned.
Preach it, Brother.
