Just been getting into Starcraft and now Diablo, this is great stuff. Very detailed and interesting, I feel like I've missed out a lot in my childhood gaming :(

dont you find it strange to compare in-game strength of whoever, with lore?
mephisto is just weaker than the others, cause he's in act 3. if they had placed him in act 5, they'd balanced him to be harder than the others.
it's all just game balance, and has nothing to do with story/lore.
its really unrealistic that there's normal/NM/hell versions of items, and 1 sword being 100x stronger than another. again this is just game balance, to make the game progressively harder, but making you stronger. otherwise you'd never be able to win.

concerning Marius and such, whats strange about the soulstone corrupting him? thats how Diablo first lurded Leoric into the catacombs to begin with. He was still trapped in the soulstone, and didnt have a physical form, so had to corrupt Leoric through his dreams. So Marius was obviously corrupted and demented by the soulstone he carried for years?
So it was combination of him seeing Diablo ripping free from his human form, and opening gate to hell, and also the soulstone, that aged and demented him.

I think the strenght of the Prime evil (when possessing a mortal of course) is also affected by mental and physical powers of the host. So Mephisto who possessed Sankekur for years before D2 is weaker than Diablo whose host is a strong warrior and Baal who possessed Tal'Rasha, one of the most powerful mortal mages ever.

Please correct me if this is totally wrong.

well thats true, but he could have found someone better during those years?
Diablo broke free from his host, and became his true form. why wouldnt Mephisto have been able to do the same thing, during several years?

Maybe assuming one's "true form" is so hard that one needs outside help, like in Diablo's case.

This was a great read. Was looking forward to see the lore before the Diablo games and everything including them.

Can't wait to see what path will Blizzard take story wise in Diablo 3.

I could see where they need to find a host and be a parasite in this person waiting and slowly corrupting the host till they can come forth. Depending on your power level you'll want either a host you are sure to be able to corrupt and is strong enough to house your enormous power; also you would want to add the hosts powers/resources to your own so you have to be very selective. Some just pick an easy target others research; that sort of stuff.

Does help to have worshipers who can help you in finding the right target and ensure things go well.

The mysterious disappearance of the Arch-Bishop Lazarus left no one in Tristram with whom the King would take council.

    ...
The Arch-Bishop Lazarus, frayed and dishevelled, returned from his absence and assured the townsfolk that he too had been ravaged by the growing evil of the Monastery.

Where was he at in the time between? Was this before he got killed by the warrior in D1?

    Yes.

While he was 'absent' he was deep down in the labyrinth beneath the Tristram Cathedral what seemed to be freeing Diablo and conceiving the scheme to kidnap Albrech and luring the townsfolk into the Cathedral.
