I still think Imperius doesn't get his way with destroying humanity and all, and so he goes to sanctuary to ressurect the evils. D3- you fight the new and improved Diablo (possibly a combination of diablo, baal, and mephisto). And then in D3 expansion you fight Imperius as he turns into some sort of demonic angel.

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...
scratch my previous post, how bout this: The devs said D3 is storylined in a way that makes it seem like everything has gone according to Diablo's plan.
Then it occurred to me... Diablo has been with the heroes this whole time!
DIABLO IS CAIN!
Rather Deckard of Cain is possessed by Diablo. No one knows it of course because who would suspect little old Cain.
Ill let you piece together how this could be, but here are some things to make you think about Cain, Hes the ONLY one left alive in Tristam? Cain with all of his knowledge, theres no way Diablo just leaves him there coincidentally for the heroes to find. Why is it Cain's follower and not Cain that gets the vision in D3? Why did Cain want to go back to Tristam in the first place? What do you think Cain looks like with his hood up and without his stick? THE DARK WANDERER
Im about as certain of this as I am that following Diablo 3 news till the day it comes out is perfectly healthy.

Imperius hates the demons more than the humans....He would never ressurect the three..Also that would be obsered anyway and be kinda a cheap story. Also I dont think there is a way for an angel to ressurect the prime evils. Besides the fact the prime evils were never dead anyway. We just banished them from our world.

OK guys plz keep it easy. I think the idea is plausable but I would hope for a more compelling story for d3.
So as far as the return of the prime evils. I dont think that the diablo we have seen is a diablo baal mafisto combo. The reason I think this is the character of each of the prime evils are very different and mafisto is the eldest of the 3. i dont think that he would be deminished to a mouth on his sholder. Now if one arm was all full of horn and muscle(Baal) and the other arm was like slime and what ever(mafisto) then i would get it. I just dont see enough of baal and mafisto in the d3 we have seen to justify that they are apart of it. I think that the Big Bad Deamon we saw in the trailer was just diablo.
I still cant wrap my head around how he came back though(assuming its just diablo) if he cralled back out of the void or what... Can anyone help me out??
The idea that deckard cain is anyway evil or diablo is downright stupid....just sayin...
Its not that stupid, the pre-cursor parts are definitely all there (see below), unlike a lot of other speculations which are based seemingly off of books and rumors.

Your question comes down to who could possibly have enough knowledge of the abyss or at least know where to look. Again the answer seems to be Cain, the most knowledgeable character in Diablo. All of the other horadrim are dead, Tyrael is supposedly being punished and probably wouldn't help Diablo. And its not like evil Diablo Doesn't have the power to posses Cain. Approaching it logically: Diablo has opportunity, motive, and means.
Opportunity- When Tristan gets overrun with demons, guess what Cain is the only one not harmed (how is this fact not clawing at the back of your mind, everyone at one point Must have wondered, even briefly, Why Cain was really just left there)
Motive- To posses/gain knowledge of something something (maybe abyss, maybe how to turn into a 3 headed dragon devil), probably won't know exactly until D3
Means- Diablo is generally pretty good at making people evil, Mephisto corrupted a whole council, Baal consumed Tal Rasha, Diablo corrupted the hero from D1
Cain is looking mighty ripe like a fresh red plum. Hes the last person anyone would expect yet one of the most critical pieces of the Diablo story.
Plus, if I remember correctly didn't a dev say something like Cain will no longer be the one identifying items, instead it would be like an artisan or something. Why remove the cliche Cain service? Unless...

Lol Cain is nearly dead...why would diablo use his body? His body is worse off than Leorics son he used as a host in the first game... Cain being evil is just as bad as the idea of Tyrael being evil.....
The other rumors make much more sense. Imperius would make more sense as a bad guy then Cain would...

I already told you why Cain is so valuable- pure and simply its his knowledge (apparently you have none otherwise youd know this from my previous post), we dont know what knowledge Diablo would have been seeking in Cain but it probably has something to do with Diablo's "master plan" the devs told us about. And since when was age a factor in this game let alone any fantasy game LMAO!!!!
And the rumors about Imperius are all based off of books and other rumors, Not D2 itself. They make some sense if D3 was being written after the books, but guess what? Its not, D3 is written based on D2 and D1 with some book elements thrown in.
I am basing the Cain rumor off of what we know from the games. Let me try to put it a little more simply for you: The Devs Said "the storyline in D3 will make the player realize everything that happened in D2 went according to Diablo's master plan" (Now was Imperius even in D2? NO) So if not Imperius, who had the most influence on what the heroes did throughout D2? Cain did. Thus more than likely, either Cain is actually an evil backstabber (Think Sauromon) or Cain has been listening to someone who is an evil backstabber.
I googled this suspiscion and of course im not the only one that thinks this, Other possibilities: Cain just wants his own power, Cain is actually possessed by Belial, Cain is possessed by Diablo.
Sorry bub, try again.

Considering the books are canonical, you are incorrect.
How is cains knowledge importnat? He knows all about the horadrim, which is dead now since he is the last member. He seeks knowledge from books...books that are irrelivent to diablo and the three in the first place. He may learn all abou the sin war and whot not from the books, but why would anyone in hell care about that? They were around during the time.

Youwillneverknow; This is a very intriguing theory thank you so much for informing me of it at least. I think it is defiantly plausible and you have posted a compelling argument based on reliable data. But plz refrain from condescension towards anyone who has a different vision of how the game will pan out. And to others, saying Nuh-uh is difficult not to take offense to.
So these are the theories I can name:
Traitor/possessed Cain
Diablo summoned (necro)
Diablo crawls back from abyss
Lesser evils have master plan
Imperious has master plan
Diablo+baal+mafisto Super demon
Oke how about this just a wild theory but still xD
Diablo Baal and Mephisto, did not die, but instead their spirits were sent to the ''Abyss"
What if Diablo is indeed the strongest of the three which we all think, and Baal and Mephisto give like 3/4 of their life energy to diablo so he can Return to hell (but they are stuck there because of it) to boss around belial and azmodan and sending them to sanctuary (I think belial or Azmodan is act 2 boss if anyone could confirm that) and order the invasion of sanctuary now that the worldstone is destroyed and when hell controls sanctuary they use humanity to strengthen their armies and attack heaven control everything then diablo has enough power to bring his brothers back and three brothers rule everything, maybe that is their grand sceme? I dont know lol just a theory
According to the beta, Leah is probably the offspring of an Angel and Diablo.
We are told her father was a great warrior, lost when Tristram fell to Diablo. The Warrior from Diablo 1 was the one Diablo eventually manifested through.
Her mother was Adria the witch, who has been speculated as being more than human because of the information she possesses. This would make Leah, at least, a nephilim, and probably mean that she has bookoo power.
I noticed, looking back on the few images we have of Diablo as it appears in Diablo 3, that its body was more slender, and there are two lung-like shapes across its chest that approximate the location of breasts. I think Leah manifests into Diablo at some point in Diablo 3, either becoming possessed by her father, or becoming a new Diablo.
Leah is an offspring of Adria and Aidan, the Dark Wanderer. So far, it hasn't been confirmed whether Adria is an Angel or not, since nothing actually supports that claim.
The Dark Wanderer has been revealed to be elder son of King Leoric.
So, lets do a quick recap:
Leoric - possessed (spiritually) by Diablo, driven to madness.
Albretch, Leoric's younger son - possessed (physically) by Diablo. This is how Diablo manifested in the first game.
Dark Wanderer, Leoric older son - possessed (physically and spiritually) by Diablo.
In the case of Leoric the possession did not result in Diablo physically emerging.
In the case of Albretch, the possession and madness and transformation are implied to have been much more rapid, and that Albretch's spirit was not so much 'corrupted' and 'utterly destroyed' when Diablo brought his nightmares to life. This is open to interpretation, of course.
The Dark Wanderer's possession appears to by a hybrid of the two types of possession that came before it. He is compelled to travel East (spiritual) while also manifesting some diabolical abilities (physical). This eventually gives over entirely to possession.
Now, if we assume that Leah is the last of the house Leoric, a house routinely corrupted by Diablo and considering corruption as one of the primary narrative themes of Diablo, it seems likely Diablo will manifest through Leah, or that the potential will at least be considered in the story.
Leah might be the person that breaks the chain of corruption present in Sanctuary since before the events of Diablo 1, though.
There doesn't seem to be any available information sufficient to sustain any other theory of Diablo coming back, either resurrecting in his sort-of daughter or having his daughter assume the mantle of Diablo herself.
I can't really see any other way for Diablo to return aside Leah. Maybe through summoning, but they added Leah to the story for a reason.
Diablo is the last boss for D3. All the info is there if you dig through the data mining sites. So he IS back. Question is how.
See, the thing is...
I'm not sure we're talking about a 'he' at all.
The Prime Evils have demonstrated a willingness to 'die' for higher purposes. The Diablo we're worried about in D3 may not be the Diablo from the last two games...
Also the street art in Germany makes Diablo look very feminine.
I am 90% sure Leah will be the new Diablo. Whether it truly will be Diablo's daughter and a new lord of Terror, or Diablo finding a way to use her body.
