I recently played through Diablo 2 to the end of Act 5 Normal, and I thought about something: you defeat Baal at the end, but his Soulstone is never destroyed at Hellforge. Was his Soulstone connected to the Worldstone, or was it destroyed in one of the books (I never took time to read them)? What happened to Baal's Soulstone?
To my knowledge, no. I've never seen anything in-game that shows it being destroyed, only Mephisto's and Diablo's, and I don't recall anyone ever quoting anything from the books when this question came up.
The question is irrelevant because the brothers clearly do not need a soul stone to survive. Diablo is in Diablo 3. His soulstone was destroyed. So either way we might see all the brothers depending on what Blizzard has planned out for their daring return this time.

Or there is some aspect of the stones unknown to us.
Regardless, it seems reasonable enough to assume that no, it wasn't destroyed.

I've wondered about that...you defeat Baal, and Tyrael hustles you out of the chamber while Baal's soulstone is left lying in a puddle of Baal barf. Maybe that combined with the destruction of the Worldstone was enough to do the trick?
well, when you kill izual, the first quest in act 4.
he says he helped diablo, mephisto, and baal. cause the soulstones were corupted. so maybe if they were courupted, they didnt really do anything really. or not to the full affect they thought they were suppose to do.

I don't think it's necessarily irrelevant. I'm sure the soul stones did something.
Plus, another discussion before was that Diablo in D3 looked more elemental than living, with rock skin.
Maybe that has something to do with his soul stone being destroyed.
I think that worldstone's destruction is the key to the mystery here So the question is : Did Baal introduce the corrupted soulstone into the worldstone in order to bend it to his will?
I hadn't thought about Baal physically implanting his Stone into the World Stone, but that would make sense, given that his soul didn't flee back into it, but rather wafted into the air.
This reminds me. In the end cinematic, there are wisps flying around in the air behind Tyrael, similar to the ones that fled Baal's body. I wonder if this might be his soul(s), or is just a natural occurence in the cavern.

Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

His soulstone was shattered prior to Diablo 1. Tal'Rasha had one shard and used it to contain Baal for a long long time, but eventually lost the battle.
So, while it is shattered, it is not completely destroyed.
Which brings up the question: When you smashed Diablo's and Mephisto's soulstones, did you just shatter them, or did you completely obliterate them?
As for the use of the Soulstones, they were used to imprison The Three centuries(?) ago, by Cain's ancestors I believe.
I believe his soulstone was not destroyed or implantrd in the worldstone but, just forgotten in the chamber and kept alive to keep the sttory going and make it a cliff hanging end.

I don't think Tyrael would have made that mistake :). It either has been destroyed by the worldstone's destruction or it was inserted into the worldstone in order to corrupt it. Whether it remained lodged into the worldstone is a mystery to me... how else would he have currupted the worldstone? With his touch? Could the mont arreat's destruction be strong enough to replicate the hell hammer's soulstone destruction power??
Long you say! Why would Baal give his soulstone to a mere mortal such as Nihlahtak? I think the soulstone is a source of power in the world of sanctuary, Baal needs it in order to keep his powers to their full potential. Nah I think it was either destroyed with the worldstone or maybe it remained at the mont arreat under feets of rocks/dust. Maybe he's gonna get a new vessel and raise another army. The detruction of the worldstone could also have dactivated the soulstones rendering them useless into sanctuary! Awww man I love to propose crazy ideas!
P.S: Nhilahtak was an old necro, I'm pretty sure he's pretty experienced in the dark arts after all those years of practice.
Or the soulstones served their purpose and their disposal was part of the plan? Like you said, baal could have given his soulstone to somebody else (Nihlahtak or anyone else) in order to remain in the realm of sanctuary. The 2 soulstones (meph and Diablo) were shattered together in the hell forge... was that part of the plan? Anyway, what is clear ---> the plan involved the destruction of the worldstone? We should also look into the consequence of that act. Why didn't hell troops invade sanctuary at that time?
Anyway, as always Ivaron you bring good points to the table I must say that I agree with almost everything you say. But then again, what is the purpose of the soulstones if everything contained in hell can just spew out into sanctuary without any obstacle? Maybe are they a way to disguise themselves and remain undetected.

Shattered them, but shattered them enough. And they were also destroyed at Hellforge though I never fully understood why being destroyed there made such a difference. Unless you were merely releasing their souls into a nearby vacuum that happened to lead into the Great Abyss.
I would assume that Tyreal destroyed it asap following the destruction of the worldstone. I mean, wouldn't it take a while for corruption to set it, especially for an angel? It took Diablo a couple days at the very least from what we know to corrupt our warrior into the Dark Wanderer, Baal would take longer for Tyrael. As for where the Prime Evils go, I'd like to see how exactly it is they come back, we went through all that trouble to put them in Hell now, but the Worldstone was destroyed and how Sanctuary is a Free-For-All for Heaven, Hell, and Humans.
Yeah. There are two scenes in the end cinematic of a soulstone being smashed, however they are not the same; the first one is Mephisto's, and the second one is Diablo's.
