This is the Chronological order of the current Diablo Novels.

They don't actually go in order that they are numbered in.
Ironically, the three Diablo books that are numbered 1 2 and 3 are actually chronologically ordered in reverse.

The Kingdom of Shadow

Its amazing how things can change without careful review, considering it all seemed good when I first did it lol. Now they are alot closer to the games than they were before. The only real exception being Demonsbane (Sin War is aaages before everything, and Moon is right after DII, hardly any gap).
Sounds about right. Solomir could probably confirm anything your unsure of.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Nice list, I always wondered exactly what the whole order was.
Although, I've only read Demonsbane, The Black Road, and Legacy of Blood. I loved the end of Legacy of Blood with Xaxaz starting to say the name. Definately my favorite so far.
That never made sense to me though. So the Dark Wanderer ran away from Marius at Lut Gholein without him knowing, transformed into the true Diablo form, killed Xaxaz in that form, then transformed back into the Dark Wanderer only to eventually find Mephisto and transform back AGAIN so he can travel back into hell.. huh?
haha, weird. No, he mustn't have actually transformed. He must have just been in Xazax's mind, somehow still powerful enough to kill him (even though he seems pretty weak before entering Tal Rasha's tomb). Maybe because Xazax is a demon too, so they both have ties to Hell that somehow makes Diablo stronger against other demons, maybe?
But I love how he goes "Smelled you from afar . . . knew you immediately . . . Cunning . . . lying . . . traitorous little bug . . ."
'Lying' because Xazax is a minion of Belial, the Lord of Lies lol.
Ok, haven't read any of the books, but I had thought from what I read on here that Legacy of blood was about Bartuc, which I thought occurred long before D2? Again, just the impression I have garnered from ya'll talking about on here.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]"Fool! You have just ensured the doom of this world. You cannot even begin to imagine what you've set in motion this day. Go to the Temple of Light, in the eastern ciry of Kurast. There you will find the gate to Hell opened before you. You must find the courage to step through that gate Marius. Take the stone you hold to the Hellforge, where it will be destroyed. Now run! Take the stone and run!"
Definitely start with the Sin War - so you know how it all began. And this is definitely the right thread to ask that, because thats why I put them in order.
And yeah, Legacy of Blood is about Bartuc, but its loong after he supposedly 'died'. They tried to destroy his armour when they killed bartuc, but they couldn't do it, it was too magically powerful. So they buried it. And the Legacy of Blood is about this guy who finds the armour and puts it on, only to find that he can't take it off and its got control of his body lol. Kind of like those scary Halloween masks that you can't take off.
It has also come to my attention from Imperium that The Kingdom of Shadow needs more support. I originally put it there because the Worldstone isn't even mentioned in it, and then suddenly in Moon of the Spider it has several references to being destroyed (at the beginning of the book). Which makes me think that while Zaal was traveling from Kehjistan to Westmarch the whole DII events took place and the Worldstone was destroyed. It is true that Zaal would have wanted to be in on the action, but maybe it just wasn't his time? Then again, if he was passing through, he is likely to have run into the Monastary (apparently the only path to Westmarch) with Andariel, and many other demons along the way, but he seems to have a fairly smooth travel. Alright, it makes more sense that Kingdom of Shadow happened during DII.
Diablo (disguised as the Archangel Mirakodus) never actually made contact with Juris Khan during the book. It only talks about having contact in ancient times. An image of the supposed Archangel is conjured, but only from Khan's memory, not the actual thing. So yeah, Diablo was probably busy freeing his brothers and being defeated lol. I'll make a note of it on the wiki page.
Then again... Zayl went back to his people, and we don't know how long he was there for. He could have stayed there during the whole DI and DII, which is a few years... nah, thats too long. When reading Moon of the Spider it sounds like he is still mentally recovering from Ureh, after seeing such horrors.
I can't find any good quotes in Kingdom of Shadow that relate it to any other events.
But, here's a better quote for the destruction of the Worldstone at least:
"In truth, he could actually not be certain that the Worldstone had been destroyed, but the evidence was certainly there. Mount Arreat - where legend claimed it had been hidden - had exploded, its entired top ravaged. The destruction had been heard about even here in the far-away Westmarch. More to the point, the rumors among those with the sight gave starker credence to the horrific claim. It was said that one of the Prime Evils themselves - Baal, Lord of Destruction - had been the cause, and if so, the mortal plane was in for far worse to come. The Worldstone had existed since time immemorial, created, so the teachings of Rathma said, to keep the mortal world protected. Now, both the powers of Light and Darkness reached out to fully claim humanity, and in their battles against one another the two cosmic factions threatened to destroy what they desired. Somehow, all that tied into Zayl's own urge to come to Westmarch. Somewhere in this vast kingdom, the repercussions of Baal's heinous deed would soon be felt."
I think that pretty much justifies that the Worldstone had not been destroyed previously. Well, for Kingdom of Shadow, its not so much evidence to say that it wasn't destroyed yet, but more so a lack of evidence to prove that it had. Does this make sense?
HOly crap, I just made an interesting (but fairly pointless) discovery.
In The Kingdom of Shadow, Tsin (the sorcerer) discovered a letter that Humbart Wessel wrote (when he was alive) that was addressed to Hyram of the Zakarum. Hyram is also in Moon of the Spider, who is the master of the Black Ram Inn (chef and owner), and he's the first character to speak directly to Zaal in the book. Humbart at the time is in his pouch, and just after he leaves he does try to say something but its inaudible, and Zaal quickly makes him be quiet. As far as I'm aware, no other mention of Hyram is in the book.
Here's the quotes to support:
Kingdom of Shadow:
“This man” proved to be one Humbart Wessel, a veteran fighter with a thankfully plain manner of writing. Kentril puzzled through the passages, at first finding nothing.
“Toward the bottom,” Tsin offered.
The slim mercenary read over that part of the aged scroll, which Humbart Wessel had clearly written years after the fact.
On the seventh day, near dusk, the passage began,Master Mazi again approached the edge of the ruins. Says I to him, that this quest’s seen no good end and we should go, but he says he’s certain this time. The shadow will touch at just the right angle. It has to.
Master Mazi promised much gold to us and another offer none there’d take, however worthy any might think themselves. Fly up to Heaven . . . older now, I still wouldn’t have taken it.
The shadow came like he said, Nymyr’s hand reaching out for old Ureh. We watched, certain as before that we’d been on a fool’s quest.
Aah, what fools we were to believe that!
I recall the shadow. I recall the shimmering. How the ruins suddenly looked alive again. How the lights glowed inside! Swear I still will that I heard the voices of folk, but couldn’t see any!
“I’m coming . . .” Those were Master Mazi’s last words, but not to us, though. I remember them still, and I remember how we thought we saw the glitter of the gold that he’d told us about again and again—but not one man would enter. Not one man would follow. Master Mazi went it alone.
We camped there, hearing the voices, hearing some of them call to us, it seemed. None of us would go, though. Tomorrow, Isays to the others, tomorrow when Master Mazi comes out and shows all’s well, we’ll go in and get our fill. One night, it won’t matter.
And in the morning, all we saw were ruins. No lights. No voices.
No Master Mazi.
Lord Hyram, I writ this down like I agreed and it goes to the Zakarum—
Moon of the Spider:
"G-greetin's, master! Hyram, I am! Master of the Black Ram! 'Tis an unusual honor it 'tis to have one of yours here, unusual, but not unheard of. Been one of two... over the years." (Talking to Zaal, pg 16 in book).
Its also weird that Hyram later says that he understands the nature of Necromancers, while at the same time he seems to be associated with the Zakarum.
Its really annoying trying to find quotes for Moon of the Spider because I don't have the ebook copy. Does anyone know where I can download it?
Sorry for reviving an older thread, but I was wondering if it's more interesting reading the books in chronological order or reading them in the order they were published?
I would just read them how they're supposed to be read, 1-2-3. Either way you should start with the Sin War Trilogy and go 1-2-3 seeing as thats the most important novel lore-wise
The Sin War Books go in the right chronological order 1-2-3, It follows the same main characters, other characters, storyline and adventure very closely with only a small time period between the books. I think the gap between 1 and 2 was a few weeks in the story if I remember correctly.
The books which don't go in the correct chronological order are the other ones, but they don't follow the same story or same main character so its really irrelevant which time they occur
Diablo was never actually there in Ureh. The 'image' of Diablo was conjured by Lord Juris Khan, and was only an immitation of his memory of Diablo in disguise as an Archangel. While the events of Kingdom of Shadow took place, Diablo was running over Sanctuary freeing his brothers.
Zayl lost his entire left forearm. I suppose it just depends whether you consider that 'badly injured' or not.
I'm too afraid to go back to the DIII website, it crashes my browser whenever I enter it. But from what I remember, Cain's journal only expands one year.
Cool I made an order of Sin War the day d3 was announced Something to do while waiting. Btw I heard the Sin War was some sort of really official and good ones and the rest of the books aren't that important to read?
What u think is it worth to buy all of them or would sin war be just enough? I've playd thru d1 and 2
The Sin War is pretty mandatory to understand the lore of the world. I also suggest reading The Kingdom of Shadow, as it is about the city of Ureh and judging by the DIII cinematic trailer, we will be visiting Ureh!
Its definitely worth it to buy them all. They are pretty cheap, and they delve you right into the Diablo universe.

OKey thanks for the info, I'll read the Sin War first and see if I get more excited about it.. I'm not much of a reader

EDIT: Wait, it was actually slightly wrong. The Black Road is actually between Diablo I and II, not before Diablo I.

That does throw it off just a bit. The books have sure made a few events quite confusing.
