I was cleaning out some boxes I haven't touched since college and I stumbled upon my old D2 & LoD discs. I haven't played the game since 2003, but with all the hype surrounding D3 I decided to install the nostalgia.
I'm going completely casual here, no friends, trying to avoid public games, rushing, etc.
Any tips for playing completely solo, or is it the same as all the MF guides I've read: make a blizzard sorc, farm Nightmare bosses, outfit alts as the gear comes in? Do I stand a chance starting with a melee character?
It seems like every guide assumes you can just stockpile stat/skill points until level 30 and leech XP from Act 2 normal on. Any help for someone who intends to play the game, albeit not at the highest level or close to it.
I've been out of the loop for years as well, but I do know that now you can reset skills/stats once per difficulty. So, invest in life-saving early skills, then dump them later once you get your final skills.
i played through just towards the end of last summer on single player so wasnt able to sell my items or do anything besides i had 2 friends that also played, 1 was in hell and the other was way behind me and i always helped him. I went a meteorb build on a sorc and it worked really well. you can clear all of nightmare super easily with just ice orb alone. in hell though you have to change to have meteor and ice orb though because some are resistent to physical (merc) and ice. i would say just run through the whole game i wouldn't bother with doing trist runs or tomb runs, i never did. To start off i would suggest going lightening sorc then when level 30 go to ice orb then when in hell go to meteorb. Other than that run through the whole game on normal maybe do some baal runs once your there, but once u hit nightmare, i would say do some diablo runs and baal runs. With just ice orb diablo runs take probably not even 5 minutes, everything drops so fast and u can get some decent items if you have some good mf and on top of that real good exp. If your looking for real good exp tho go to baal runs. Other than that head to hell and hopefully u got the gear!
Well, I'd suggest the classic route with a sorc first. That is, if you're not into "self-found". I'm sure, you can play any class that way and beat hell, but if you like being effective and make use of all those nice low and mid lvl items on your future barb, nec, whatever, you have to get them first. And getting them fast means starting with a sorc(simple reason: Teleport), most effective should be Blizzard. You can farm Mephisto hell at about 70 with virtually no gear. Collect all topazes on your trips and get a chest and a helm with max sockets. That's 7x 29 or so % mf for the start, some blue gear with mf, maybe some charms if you find them. That's how I started my several D2 projects. You'll get all the normal and exceptional unique and set items pretty soon, some elites too. And THEN you can start your "real" characters without much of a grind, as you can supply them with decent equipment from the get-go. Nothing like beating all of nightmare in less than an hour with a decked out sorc(no shortcuts, no help).
I always found the paladin to be a great first character...Might be a biased opinion though.
Zeal is a great ability. get some sort of mana steal weapon or ring and you can basically do it all day (similar to the barbarians dual wield thing...i forget the name)
You can get various resistances somewhat early. Just in case you get those pesky beetles in act II. i HATE those beetles.
and should you ever go multiplayer (i play single player, but I play it over battle.net in case I have friends in the future that want to have a go at it) It's a good support class and well rounded as melee.
