yea, for your first hammerdin you gotta find the sweet spot, you can either cast a few from afar and they'll come to you, or as apples said if your just below the monster you'll always hit (when you get enigma you can just tele then cast and you'll hit all the time).
As for your mana, get redemption and every time you see a descent number of dead guys switch to that for 2 seconds and you'll be full again.
And yea avoid casting beside walls or columns haha the hammers arnt that strong that they can pass through those
now for zons.. if your gonna make a zon i say make a javazon. Javazons are one of the most beast melee pvp classes in the game if geared right, and you know how to play. People think smiters are OP, when my java would 1 shot em. it did 10.2k charged strike damage (10-12 charged bolts = 100k+ ez) then i had very fast attack speed, and all my charms were faster run... so even your running and your char stops to attack and you would miss... your charged bolts still release and kill the person. smiters you run and lightning fury until he twitches and charge strike him. i dont think theres any class that has a real advantage over a javazon. btw i had a perf griffians... <3. (one of the rarest/expensive items in the game).
thats a lot of talk. care to wager some items/hrs in a duel vs my smiter?
lol, i quit diablo 2. i gave away my account. smiters couldnt do shit to my zon. 60+ dodges, 75% block. so chrage wont even hit me. your smite would because its so fast. that being said it takes about... 4 hits to kill me with a smiter. takes me one shot to kill a smiter. its not hard at all.. ive killed smiters that are MAX geared you can possibley get in the game... eth exile, near perf grief, skill gc's with 40 life. all that crap. the smiter was a good friend of mine. and i beat him 9/10 times. btw. i can run a lot faster then your charge... AND if i wanna be really cheap ill just run and lightning fury you till you die. since you cant ever catch me...

convenient that you quit then.
cold sorc is a good beginning mfer, but i dont recommend 1-element sorcs because they have limited viability in hell.

Yeah, with my super-casual playtime, I'm definitely going cold sorc. As for Hell - no worries, my Bowzon wife will take care of cold-immunes for me. =)
Bowazons are seriously damage starved because bows just don't have enough damage compared to melee weapons. Bows also can't be ethereal. That is why, if you want to make a hell viable bowzon you need several rare runes to make runewords like fortitude or what hans already mentioned; faith. The unique windforce hydra bow is also quite effective or so I've heard but it's also rare as hell. As a matter of fact i found one just yesterday for the first time in my life...
Yep. Bows are kinda underpowered. There is only one bow that really gets the job done right though. And I have found that bow to be the Faith runeword. What a beast.
You can do the Bone build for the Necromancer. That way, you can dodge the Magic Immunes you find in Hell by using Corpse Explosion, which can be fun, or you can employ your wife's assistance. Just an idea.

I wouldn't recommend a Bowazon for SP play with the latest patch. With the casual gear you'll be getting it is hard to crank up the damage to acceptable levels in Hell. I just stopped when my bowazon reached Hell.
Blizzard is awesome to use, but remember that there's a hell of a lot more cold immunes in the game compared to lightning immunes.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Yeah, I understand SP is a very different beast. What I meant is that my cold-oriented Sorc will only be played with my wife's Bowzon (only playing on Bnet, not really interested in SP). We'll cover each other's backs.
I wasgetting my terminology all mixed up there for a second what I mean is, SP or playing on B.net doesn't really make a difference if you're not playing in the high-end on B.net with all the fancy runewords and shit.
I'm just saying you're wife might find the Bowazon a bit boring after lvl 70

Blizzard is great for grinding/MFing bosses, though. With absolutely crap gear, I'm talking random stuff with topazes stuck in, I could solo Andy and Meph in Hell mode with the lead-Andy-in-circles-and-cast-Blizzard-behind-you trick and the moat trick with Meph.

Another quick question. Items/jewels that confer "+2 max damage" or "add 1-6 cold damage" only work on weapon attacks, right? So that means the Paladin's Blessed Hammer or the Sorceress' spells do not receive those bonuses. Just wanted to make sure.
Similarly, attack rating only works on weapon attacks too. So what affects your chance to hit with a spell? Is it the monster's resistance that determines it, or does resistance only impact the damage you do?
Lastly, there are some armor items with "+30% damage". Does this apply to spells, or weapon attacks only?
(To answer someone's earlier question, I am on US West.)

That is correct. The exception is things like +14% fire damage, which works for fire attacks etc.

Spells cannot miss, and are only mitigated by resistances.

The Hammerdin is quite powerful. I have to say it's interesting to see myself cast this tiny little hammer that literally makes everything around me explode. Herein lies the problem - I really DO feel like a caster, I rarely melee much anymore, and I kind of miss bashing stuff to death.
The other two specs seem a bit more up-close-and-personal. Smiter and Zealer. When I mentioned it, my friends who played years ago scoffed - apparently back then these builds were laughable. Reading up on it now, the Smiter seems pretty good (particularly against bosses), though worse off against hordes of monsters. There's not much out there on the Zealer. How are these two builds now? Viable end-game builds in PvM?
Are you playing on your own? Because you don't want to play a smiter on your own. I have heard to can play one with just 1pt in smite, but I don't know how that works.
Zealers are excellent and wade through everything with rather ease regardless of gear up until hell. They stay good there too, but physical immunes become a problem.
With respecs and all nowadays though, you could just level him as a Zealer and see if you want a smiter after that.

I just beat Hell SP with a Zealer, so it's definitely viable, though, as Phrozen pointed out, physical immunes are a bitch. But, if you're playing with your wife, her Freezing Arrow should do well enough.

Assuming I'm all by my lonesome, how did you get around the physical immunes?

Either just run (usually easier, especially against Ghosts, which drain your mana) or slowly chip away at them with Vengeance (it might be useful to throw a few extra points in there for PIs).
Another thing I noticed: if I hadn't looked it up, I wouldn't have realized that Concentration affects Blessed Hammer. It's certainly not obvious from the spell description (though the wiki states that half of the aura's bonus is contributed to Blessed Hammer). Was this a change made by a patch, and the game description text simply never updated?
Also: Blessed Hammer seems to be a Physical attack. Does that mean it also fails to damage physical immunes?

Physical damage. So if you're a Sorceress using Enchant, it only applies to the physical damage you deal in melee and not the fire.

Hmmm.. didn't realize there were physical immunes in Hell difficulty. That sounds like a huge PITA. =)
