I just finished reading moon of the spider, and it tells of a master necromancer by the name of Karybdus who has gone mad in search of the balance. The book references the destruction of the worldstone as a somewhat recent event. I also remember that the lore states that the survivors of D2 were all dead or maddened save the barbarian. Those who have read this book will recall Karybdus's ill fate. What do you think, was he the necromancer or nay?
Here is a passage describing his garments:
"Utter black, save for a curious trio of bands across the upper chest and another that stretched down the midsection. One shoulder also bore a jutting, protective cover . . . which on close inspection an onlooker would have realized was the skull of a horned and fanged creature that could have never walked the mortal plane in life. It and the bands were all the same in color: bone-white. Much of what the gray-eyed spellcaster wore resembled armor of a reptilian look, with ridges and scales."
It seems to be a perfect description, why would you have any reason for doubt? The book even says that he has short gray hair. I'm sure most necromancers don't dress that way, neither zayl nor the necromancer from legacy of blood dressed that way. It stands to reason that the most powerful necromancer would have pursued the prime evils in search of the balance, and Karybdus is said to be the most powerful.
I'm dead sure I heard it in an interview. Recent lore, yes, but lore nonetheless.

That's actually a really good fit. Ass you point out, he doesn't wear standard necromancer armor.
And unless I miss my guess, it's also said that he's faced much worse horrors than any other necromancer in the world. And what greater horror than to face the Three?
Then again, maybe our Necro is just another necromancer who was once an apprentice of Karybdus and thus adopted a similar style of clothing, or maybe they were friends etc.

Yes the hair length is the only discrepancy but a haircut doesn't seem out of karybdus's capabilities. He is also over 100 years old so perhaps he just grew tired of it.What really matters is what Knaak was thinking when he created Karybdus. Was he trying to copy the style of the d2 necromancer? Most definitely. Why then would he not try in some way to make the other necromancers in that style? That is the most revealing evidence to me. But a greater question persists. Do you think Karybdus is gone forever or will he somehow make a return with his 8 legged friend in D3?Since Astrogha was the spawn of Diablo perhaps Diablo will seek to release him once he makes his return.
didnt karybdus die in the book and wasnt moon of the spider like 100's of years before d2? i dont remember anything from the book because i read it last summer so sorry if im wrong, not trying to argue, and ur guess sounds reasonable that karybdus is the necro we played in d2. =]

Here is my input... All necromancers look like that
In all of the games the necro seems to have a skull on his shoulder lol.
But seriously, do you really think that when they modeled the necromancer that this guy was in mind considering how much later the book was created? I highly doubt that the character design was lore specific to later novels.

Well they don't, that's the thing. Although the D2 necro isn't a perfect match in this case either, Karybdus is closer than all others we've seen.

Like Ivaron said, Knaak may have been forced into portraying a necro this way, we have no idea how much free reins he gets.

I don't like to think the D2 heroes had specific names, but since you kind of have to give book characters a name, it is possible.
Maybe it was their way of putting the Necromancer to rest. What a horrible demise. . . You know why I think Karybdus was wrong in his vision of the balance? It is my belief that the balance exists within mankind and that heaven and hell have the power to affect the balance, but since heaven is so quiet demonic influence can easily tip the scale and therefore must be crushed at all costs.
