I say Diablo 1. The story has some mystery in it, unlike Diablo 2. All you really know in the beginning is that you are in this town called Tristram...and bad things are happening. King Leoric's son has been kidnapped, the Archbishop Lazarus disappeared. You only learn Diablo's history as you travel deeper into the labyrinth. You learn about the Sin War, the inner workings of Heaven and Hell, the ways in which Diablo would easily control somebody (weak old man or child), and finally how the Horadrim trapped Diablo in the soulstone and hid it under the church. This all comes together in the end when you figure out that Lazarus is giving Prince Albrecht to Diablo as a physical host. Then the biggest twist of all when you defeat him. You unsuccessfully attempt to control him, and so you become that which you worked so hard to destroy.
Diablo 2 had a good story, but it was pretty predictable. You knew everything about Diablo, the soulstones, and the history behind it all. It was just a matter of getting to him and finding out what your hero would do with the soulstone.
IMO D2 has better gameplay, D1 has better story/atmosphere.
i have to say d1 for story.
what i liked about d1 is that it leads you to use your imagination and builds you up from the start to fear whatever is under the chruch, just like necronergal mentioned with ogden. its one thing that was done well cause there was so much mystery about the whole world and your character, and that you couldnt help but want to help these people. i hope they implement the same in D3 as a perfect mix between both d2 game play and d1 story and mystery and ,horrorific atmosphere. cause there both so similar but very different at the same time.
Diablo had the better atmosphere, but storyline? I'm not so sure... but yes, I suppose so. Diablo's story was sparse compared to Diablo II's, but it had a stronger effect thanks to the thick atmosphere and the way in which the story unfolded, which was very 'horror fantasy' rather than Diablo II's more 'high fantasy' approach.

‘I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE ALL HAVE AIDS!’—The importance of calling them ‘mercenaries.’
The difference is in D1 you are in a town that was great and then some years ago the king's gone mad and the people starts to flee from it, whoever stays has a terrible story to tell, except for Adria who actually came, the evil is inside the town...
And D2 the evil has just appeared, since you are tracking the Dark Wanderer, so most people are not so scared, they are kind of surprised with things like those:
Act1 - hey, they are rogues, they fought demons before that, they aren't normal people...
Act2 - the first mission, the maid had just lost his family, so she wants revenge, and then the sky goes black, all the people are worried, ok, but about Duriel, why a farmer, fisher, or whatever (those people walkin') would be scary with a demon who is inside a tomb on a lost canyon away in the desert?
Act3 - this one was once a really great city but Mephisto corrupted it, the whole act was a city, the jungle grew over it, the ones who are still there are great people, did you ever noticed Nathalya??(she is an assassin, assassins are a secret society made to kill sorcerers) people of tristram surely don't have powers (except again for Adria, and Pepin who could heal "Hey, Butcher! Are you hurt?") or mercenaries, in Kuraast there's Hratli who could a Horadrim himself...
Act4 - ok, they are heroes, why be scared?
Act5 - here it's the closest town to that of D1, a small town of greater past glory which now is suffering, people here are really worried, and they have they traitor like Lazarus...
the people we talk in D2 are not regular people like in D1
with we get to talk to everyone it would be crazy
or imagine yourself in Lut Gohlein with no people walking
it wouldn't be so big then

I'm going for Diablo 2, not because I play it more than Diablo 1 but because I think its much cooler to travel the lands in search of this evil which eludes your path everytime.. It's much more interesting since I'm a big fan of travelling the world so what the heck?! Diablo 2 sure hits the spot.. Besides, being stuck in just one town tends to be very redundant and boring later on.. It's refreshing to see that your in another place and discovering more monsters and greater evil lurking And you get to kick all 3 prime evils' ass in D2 whereas in D1 Diablo is the only foe..Am i right? So 3 cheers for Diablo 2!!!! And 3 cheers for plot twist and search and destory concepts!!!!

In between Light and Darkness, he was born. Outside of time and space he exists.. In this hour of darkness, he is once again called for to rid the world of sin and chaos.....
i think the whole concept of Diablo II was different than Diablo I... i like traditional dungeon crawlers, so i like Diablo I... Diablo II was not a dungeon crawler in my book... i wished the levels were bigger and went deeper into the ground than they did...
The poll is closed but I vote D
D was an amazing game for its time and its amazing story is almost unrivaled even today. with many side quests that were great ideas with interesting characters. The Tavern sign quest and the goatman building a weapon quest lol.The atmosphere and music were just awesome. D2 wasnt as good as i thought it was going to be. I still played it hardcore. I just hope D3 will blow away my expectations.
