This stuff is too hard to keep track of. By the way, am I supposed to upgrade my clay golem? Cause he's certainly no tank at all right now. Am I supposed to rely on items to bring his level up as opposed to spending skill points on him?
And what is better for the Necro over the Trang set?
I have no idea about the set, but your golem is to be boosted by +skills eventually. Your bone spells need hard points, or else the synergies won't work, and if you max them out then you hae no skill point left for any massive golem boosting. This you need items for that.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Actually, Amplify Damage reduces a monsters Physical Resistance by 100%. Since Bone spells are magical, Amplify wouldn't help.
Lower resist doesn't affect Magic Resist, however it does affect immunities, but as always when breaking only works at 1/5 effectiveness. Thus a monster only needs 113 in any elemental resist to be impervious to a lvl 20 Lower Resist.
Ive read elsewise for both cases. Apparently, both wrong.
It's not entirely false though. I read the patch notes, and in 1.08, Amplify Damage and Lower Reisst were changed as to not affect Immunities. However it was changed back to properly affecting Immunes in 1.10.

Don't spend any point in golems, you won't have enough left anyway
20 teeth (max up last)
20 bone spear
20 bone wall
20 bone prison
20 bone spirit
put points in the curses of your choice (Lower Resist doesn't lower magic so don't use it)
1 in bone armor is enough and will absorb +600 damage with synergies
also eventually bone spear will become stronger than bone spirit so if your going pvm max it later
For the gear I won't go too deep in the specifics but for the wand go to Act 2 in normal and reroll Drognan until you get a +3 bone spear bone wand (it can take a while if you're not lucky) and get it socketed by Larzuk then make a White with it (Dol + Io). It will give you a whooping + 7 to bone spear and it's terribly cheap.
My very first character was a bone necro when the game first came out. This wand you speak of would have made me so happy. I'm gonna start playing this game again soon. I don't remember the Larzuk socketing thing. What's that all about again? It's been a while.

You must find the courage to step through this gate...
Alright, it's been a long time since I've made anything other than a Sin. But I wanna mix it up a bit. We have a Summon Necro in our group. So I thought I'd give a shot at a Bone Necro.
I want to have a Golem if I could, but people tell me even that is a waste of skill points. Is this true? And which bone spells should I be spending on? What gear do you recommend? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
ok put only one point into clay golem... well worth if if you are going to be dueling otehr than that dont bother
I always have some points in golem, no matter what my build. A tank to distract, even for a short time, is necessary when in areas where you can be swarmed from all directions, like the Frozen Tundra.
Bone spear or spirit early on. Tough. Max both eventually. If you don't have a decent tank then you won't have the time or patience to line yourself up with the monsters for the spear to be useful (piercing attack which goes through multiple enemies for any noob reading this). Spear is less useful in SP for me. in MP then I have the luxury of being able to position myself better for spear.
Bone wall etc. I find that in normal/nightmare if I'm relying upon bone wall to stop a horde coming at me then it means I'm not doing enough damage quick enough. I.e. a build problem. In hell it is useful so I only put points in when I get to hell.
Just about eveyone uses an Act2 or Act5 merc. Me too. I prefer an Act5 with my best armour, sword and barb helm. So that's your tank and its useful. Why not TWO tanks? So get yourself a golem!

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.

And what is better for the Necro over the Trang set?
Personally I would never use any sets for any character. They always end up being a lot less effective than if you used Uniques and Runewords. For Bonemancer I'd recommend..
-Harlequin Crest Shako
-BP Enigma (Breast Plate for the low STR Requirement)
-White
-Spirit Shield or Homunculous
-Spider (Arachnid Mesh)
-Magefist
-Sandstorm Treks (Usually Marrowwalks instead. But I find Treks better cause Marrows only adds to Skeleton Mastery)
-2 Stones of Jordan
-Maras Kaleidoscope
This is all assuming you can afford it all.
Theres a lot of items you can use to substitue until you can get the items/runewords.
For example: FCR/Mana rings instead of Soj, 3 to PnB skills amulet instead of Maras.
Hope this all helped

So, would you recommend I get my blocking up to 75%, or pool as much as possible into Vitality?
Everyone seems to think Vitality is the end all stat point. When you think about it though, dexterity is just another form of vitality. If you're blocking blows, that's basically hit points you saved from being subtracted. Hit points you might not have saved if you didn't invest in the dexterity.

I think block is important for bone necro since they have a lot less minions to take the hits and arrows. IIRC it isn't hard to achieve max block with homonculus for example,.
Homunculus= (72*(213-15))/(95*2)
= (72*(198)/(190)
= 75.03
= 75% chance to block with 198dex at lvl95 if using Homunculus
Alright, here's how I made my bone necro, and he's one of the best necromancers currently on US West Ladder.
20 Bone Spirit
20 Bone Spear
20 Bone Wall
20 Teeth
1 Corpse Explosion
1 Bone Armor
1 Lower Resist*
1 Amplify Damage
1 Life Tap
1 Terror
1 Weaken
1 Decrepicify
1 Iron Maiden
1 Clay Golem**
1 Golem Mastery
1 Summon Resist
The rest goes into Bone Prison***
Helmet : Shako or an amazing Necromancer Circlet (Skills, fcr, life, res) if you can get your hands on one.
Armor : Enigma obviously.
Weapon : Heart of the Oak **** or White if you can't get one.
Shield : Homoculus***** or Spirit will do.
Amulet : Maras.
Rings : X2 Sojs or FCR Res rings.
Belt : Arachs.
Gloves : Magefist.
Boots : Treks.
Switch : CTA and Spirit
* You need lower resist because if you're playing with anyone who uses elemental skills they will be forever grateful.
** Clay golem is a necessity because mine for instance, has about 13k health or so with BO. amazing tank and slows people down to boot.
***The reason you don't max all your synergies is because having the access to all the important curses and an amazing tank is much better than a little bit more damage, trust me.
****You should use HotO over a +3 to bone spirit wand with white because the damage the white gives is insignificant next to the Faster Cast Rate and Resistances that HotO gives.
*****I say homoculus over Spirit only because of the slightly better resistances and Mana Regen that it gives, despite that it doesn't have the fcr.
If you have enough mana regen, you can go for an even better mercenary in my opinion.
Act 2 Normal Combat Mercenary (Prayer)
Helmet : Andy's
Weapon : Eth 15ed CV Doom (You'll want to have the best possible CV for your Doom because its about 3 hrs to make, making it again if you find a better one is really annoying)
Armor : Fort.
And what is better for the Necro over the Trang set?

You even have the gif. Nice lol.

Only lvl 34, but he can solo Baal well enough so far.

As for wands, White is great, but if you can get a Boneshade that was rolled really well, that would be just as good if not better.
