It seems the Prime Evils have never existed physically on Sanctuary without a host.
After the Dark Exile they wandered around in spirit form corrupting innocent people and taking them as mortal hosts and inside the soulstones they had mortal hosts aswell.
So if a mortal host is always required for physical transformation then what about Andariel, Duriel and Xazax?
Lesser evils came through "portals". I can't say for sure exactly, as it's not really mentioned, but it's different from how the Prime Evils got there, its more like how all the other big beasties from Hell ended up in the mortal realm. That is why they don't have soulstones/need a host body.

Lucifer and Satan are not the same. Lucifer was an angel of God, his name meant light and he was considered the son of Dawn. Lucifer rebelled against God (I think this is how it goes). St. Michael defeated Lucifer and cast him and his followers (1/3 of the angels in heaven) out of Heaven. Fallen angels do not go straight to Hell. They roam the earth till Judgement Day when they will be banished to hell. St. Jerome named Lucifer as the devil, Satan, and stated that Lucifer was just Satan's proper name. However, traditional Christianity does not name Lucifer as the proper name for Satan. They say that Lucifer was the name of the angel who had fallen and that name is given to his state as an angel up to the point before he is cast out of Heaven. When Lucifer reached Earth, he changed into Satan. Traditional Christianity makes it clear that Lucifer and Satan are not one in the same.
Lol... Can I have some of what your smoking? o.O

So then the Diablo from Diablo 2 in Act 4 would be his true form, correct? Diablo from Diablo 1 would not be his true form, because he would technically still be using the host body, even if the host body was "mutated".

Maybe , The Diablo in Diablo 1 transforms back into Albrecht whereas none of the Prime Evils in Diablo II transform back into anything
Im still confused on a few minor details, hopefully the sin war trilogy will help me to understand more
Edit- As far as this lucifer\satan thing which just refuses to die, remember... Google is your friend!
i think the lessers were never killed or banished in their regular form so they didnt need hosts
After the Dark Exile when the three prime evils are first sent to Sanctuary they've never been killed yet but still floated around in spirit form and they had to possess people in order to take physical manifestion. But now after they wrote that in the Diablo 1 manual demons can suddenly manifest physically without mortal hosts... and then they had Legacy of Blood which threw up more question than answers like
-Wtf is with Xazax? He's a shapeshifting demon with no mortal host yet he can choose to physically menifest? and
-Wtf is with Diablo at then end of the novel, it doesnt mention anything about projections etc, So he can transform instantaneously back and forth within a mortal host now?
It really doesnt make sense why the Prime Evils would need mortal hosts after being exiled from Hell whereas other demons dont. Or perhaps its all part of that insane crazy Izual related plan. Perhaps getting exiled from Hell is more 'traumatic' than just leaving or being summoned out of Hell, so they were stripped of their bodies
Xazax is basically just a lesser demon thats under Belials control, hes in the Legacy of Blood eBook

i think it was only lucifer and crap wat were the names of the two fallen angels in that movie dogma it was lucifer and those to who were thrown out of heaven
The Angels in Dogma, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are Loki and Bartleby, respectively. Jason Lee played a demon called Azrael.
Really wish people would stop bringing up Lucifer (Light bringer) or any other name he is known by, He is not present in Diablo. several demons might have some similarities to him, but they are not him.

Diablo cannot be a fallen angel as that would first require him to be an Angel, he wasn't. He along with his brothers were born as demons out of the chaos within the black abyss.

Well, with that information than I believe that Diablo and Mephisto have shown their true from but Baal could have been withholding his although it seemed as though it was revealed in the worldstone chamber.

Dream as if you'll live forever, and live as if you'll die today. "James Dean"
That doesn't make them different. And I am not sure that that D1 Diablo didn't have a tail, the graphics of that game were pretty pixelated. And standing upright or not doesn't make it a different creature, either.
Well, standing up more upright would perhaps require a different anatomy, but as you've said, it's probably more related to the design of the game being overhauled.

Right. All demons that enter Sanctuary cannot possibly need a host body, or else there'd be no humans left to kill by the time a demon army was assembled (since they would all have been possessed).
Why would the Prime Evils then need host bodies? The reason I think, is merely one of convenienve. When they're trapped in the Soulstones, they by all account get weaker. It is a prison they cannot escape from themselves. So, upon leaving this prison, they will be weak. Rather than be killed by some random human walking by, they possess another host and use their energy to sustain themselves. Conveivably, it's also the perfect cover.
After D1, everyone thought Diablo was dead, when in fact he was not. By possessing a host, he managed to survive. Thus, the Prime Evils do not specifically need a host body, but they do prefer one.
As for their formless shapes, that could be a result of the banishing and/or manner of their exile from Hell. Or the fruitlessness of possessing someone in that instant. The Horadrim Mages would surely have been on their guard for the Three, and entering a human host at that time would probably not have been that beneficial.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
