I thought I'd post this because it's interesting to discuss all of the changes Diablo went through such as: removed quests, videos, Townspeople dialog, monsters, and hidden items that still remain on the CD.
I don't know if any of you were involved with the beta of Diablo, but ever since Diablo was released, I have seen some interesting revisions of the game. I never got to play the beta, but I'm almost 100% positive there was a version at least in between Pre-Release and Beta that some people had a copy of.
Apparently there is an Alpha 4 version, based off of the Pre-Release available online (which only has 2 - 4 levels of playability). The speech dialog of the towns people are hilarious, with completely different voices, different interface.
The beta, was a Battle.net edition only, correct?
I recall a version our High School had years ago and it wasn't Beta (didn't require Battle.net, and it had Single Player) nor was it Retail. It was just like the retail is now, the only difference that I immediately noticed? The dialog. I'm sure most of you have extracted, viewed, and listened to all the dialog in the Diabdat.mpq file right? There was alternate dialog for several people, including the wounded townsman talking about the Butcher.
The Pre-Release version of the wounded townsman, was different altogether, but the Retail version of the game has two different dialog for the wounded townsman. It only plays one, and never the second.
Anyways, this version that our High School had, always played the second dialog, and not the first.
I just thought that it was interesting that there were versions that somehow got out to the public, and as far as I know they weren't Beta.
I was aware of a lot of the cut content from the game. There was also a website that showed screenshots of the alpha and beta stages of the game. Upon reading your post I thought I'd go try and find it but I think the site is now taken down. I'll keep trying to find it though cause the screenshots really are quite interesting.
Light radius is weird kinda, don't you think? I just thought it was funny that some items were made to add or take away from light radius as if it even mattered.
I believe in D1 light radius affected when monsters 'saw' you.
The less light radius you had, the closer you could get to a monster without them noticing you. So, in theory, if you had enough negative light radius, you could walk through the game without any monsters attacking you. I could be wrong, though. I heard it somewhere...

Yeah, that's true. It was useful for a warrior to have a very low light radius so you wouldn't get overwhelmed. I can't say for sure, but it was also one of the few ways for a warrior to properly kill those succubi in Hell. It was that or that flesh to stone spell (petrify?).
Might I ask what these revisions are? I'm a "casual fan" of the Diablo series - played and beaten both of the games and LoD, but I've only read one or two of the stories set in it and I can't really win trivia in the lore. However, I am interested in seeing these "revisions" to see what they're like; I'd long wanted a "fixed" version of the Hellfire classes and a few features in an otherwise vanilla game (as, IIRC, Hellfire only let you go through the Hellfire content and not the Cathedral - could be wrong, never played it).
@Cheomesh: You were able to go through the cathedral in Hellfire. It was just two extra areas you could go when you started a new game. Personally, I usually did the Hive after the Catacombs, and the Crypt after clearing level 16 in wait for the Diablo fight.
And kind of on topic, I remember playing the demo to death. There was no experience cap so I ended up with a level 18-20 Warrior (only class available in the demo), running only the first two levels of the Cathedral. Fun, Fun! Once I finally got bored, I snagged a copy off of Ebay for cheap. ........ Man I'm old ...
