I was playing Diablo 1 the other day, and I came to the conclusion that Tristram is the responsible for giving that melancholic and slightly unsettling feeling about Diablo in general (wich is an unique and marvelous thing). Notice the colour of the ground, the quiet environment, the streams of water... all that complemented by the milestone music that inspired so much from the soundtracking of the series so far...
I wish Diablo 3 could come with something from the universe of Diablo 1. Of course, that´s just my opinion... don´t mind me!
Tristram was just... fucking iconic. It really did have that sad, hopeless feeling. Even the lack of villagers told you that this place was going to shit, and they were starting to lose hope. Where it should have been a welcome respite from the dungeons, it was more like a hopeless reminder of your quest.
Diablo I had such fantastic design..

Man this is probably the best description of why D1 was so much more creepy. This needs to be in D3. I really hope it is man. You described that perfectly as to the things that appeal to the senses and creates that feeling.

I agree completely... and I look forward for the new tristram, the athmosphere it has makes me remember of the old D1 feeling... I hope they make a good music for it... I think the music was a key part of the feeling
If blizzard keeps the wonderful Diablo1 feel in Diablo3 I will be amazed.

Maybe someone could post a thread about this to Bashiok. I´m quite sure he´ll say something inconsiderate back, but it could help the creative team to keep in mind about one of the things that turned Diablo into a huge success - the unique aesthetics of the game.
I could just hear Bashiok saying that the game needs to evolve, that they can´t use the same sceneries, etc. But this is not about making similar settings - it´s about inspiration, capturing a certain feeling.
I think that the Rogue´s Encampenmnet had that Diablo 1 feeling, although it strayed a little bit too far.
It may just be me, but i think they have done an absolutely splendid (:3) job in creating a bunny littered rainbow strewn countryside with something sick and evil about it.
Looking into some of the screenshots, the realistic and harsh nature ties in with what is to come, and to me, it seems as dark as something of that nature can get. http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/screenshots/ss57-hires.jpg
I can understand what you´re saying, and Tristram looks great as a design concept, but definitely it doesn´t look as eery and gloomy as Tristram from Diablo I. It looks kind of cartoonish to me, and it´s a shame, really.
Diablo 2 sadly trashed Tristram. They left out huge key parts of the town and they said this Tristram is just a trading center pretty much. I feel in Diablo 2 they should of let us go down a few dungeon levels to get Cain, that would of been much much better.
Since we´re going back to the Cathedral´s dungeons in Tristram, I wonder if we´re going to revisit any of the sections that appeared in Diablo 1, like the Chamber of Bone, for example.
Agreed! Tristram, for me anyhow, is the perfect Dungeons and Dragons (2nd Edition) town. When I first encountered it I thought that it was something special, and I am glad to that Tristram holds a special place in other people's hearts as well. Excellent post!

I kind of imagined that a lot of it caved in and became largely inaccessible.
As for the music, the Tristram theme itself is woven into some of the new music for D3. You all hear that, right?

the halls of the blind? HAHA
i miss the yellow zombies which take off 1 hp permanently HAHA so OP
I agree with this, though I believe that Diablo 3 will miss the mark of how Diablo I felt, sadly...
Well, Diablo 2 missed that mark as well, so I don't really mind. I still like D2
