Diablo 3 an eSports?

  • #41
Diablo 3 could be an esport but I think a few things would have to be in the game for this to happen. A replay feature that would automatically record the games on blizzard's end.. like the one in SC2. They would also need a spectator feature, and I haven't heard anything of this yet so I am not sure.

But it would be cool to watch!

jay wilson already said they dont want d3 to be an e-sport and blizzard wouldnt support it,thats good enough for me

Seeing how Blizzard has announced that they will not balance the game for PvP.... I'd say no, but that's what they've said in the past (WoW for instance) and look what happened 3 years after.

It would be nice to see a really hardcore esport on Diablo 3 but it might just be too hard to implement without breaking the game mechanics PvE-wise.

I hope not. Too many PvP balances follow and that in my opinion doesn't help anything. X does too much damage in PvP, X is now sub-optimal in PvE situations. That being said, it will probably gain enough of a following to be played that way.

I could see it being an entertaining spectator eSport. With that being said, they would probably have to handle it like they do their other tournaments (WoW) or like Guild Wars does -- everyone should have an equal gear footing. Unfortunately, that would be almost impossible to gauge, since different characters would want different gear and there isn't a set of "Merciless Gladiator's" armor, or anything of the like.

Of course, all of this is a moot point since Blizzard definitely stated they aren't interested in having D3 be an eSport. Which is probably for the best, since balancing around PvP usually messes with the delicate balance in PvE.

I would love to have Diablo 3 as an eSport. The reason that it won't be balanced like one, is why I will not even bother with it.

Frankly I don't understand why it is so hard to make 2 sets of balance rules, one for PVE and a different one for PVP... That would pretty much please everyone.

I know when the game does come out I will see if I can set up some of my own Diablo 3 tournaments. We can have 2v2, 4v4, LMS, TDM, CTF depending on witch ones Blizzard will incorporate. PvP is the end-game for Diablo 3 and not supporting would be a big mistake. And off-topic the need to have very efficient chat channels like Diablo 2 or Diablo 3 in general will fail.

I really hope something like that happens, but I wouldn't get my hopes up

I'd certainly very much like it to be an eSport, or at least a competitive game with an active PvP scene. Some of the things that would help balance it would be different versions of the skills for PvE and PvP, and a free gear crafting panel, where everyone would have access to the top-tier gear (for your character's level) and selectable stats. A better PvP would maybe not be able to be there on release, but sometime after it hopefully.

Seeing the few Diablo 3 PvP vids reminded me a lot of how matches revolve in Bloodline Champions, for example.

I find the entire concept of an eSport kind of strange. People haven't really ever liked watching someone else play computer games.

    lol @ that statement

And for the ones refering to Jay Wilson talking about not making it an E-sport... Things will change after the game has been released for a while and a lot of people pvp. Just look at what happend to WoW. It will probably never be like SC2 that is designed for competitive play but I bet it will get a lot more focus on the PvP aspect as time goes.

    I won't mind watching Diablo 3 as an e-sport. :D

If you think 20sec rounds are exciting. How long do you guys actually think it would take? Diablo is much too fast action to be appealing.

I personally think 'dueling' in a hack and slash is kinda dumb.

Well everyone has their opinion, but WoW pvp is fast pace action imo, and there are tournaments for it all over the world to win prizes.

    100% against it.

Let me explain. If you start playing it for money with sponsors and everything (excluding RMAH), you will get those pros and their fanboys crying, demanding and craving for pvp-based balance which is completely opposite of what the game should be balanced around. If you start wiggling between balance in pvp or pvm, that will be unending cycle of whine and frustration (see wow). I can't no way support it becoming an eSport.

I hope diablo 3 will be a pure PVE based game and not be balanced one bit towards pvp after release.

I just dont see it happening. What would diablo 3 as an esports look like? 4v4 just dishing it out? It's very hard for me to see the appeal in that, that other games arent already covering. Im looking forward to playing diablo 3 as what it is, and that is definitely not a potential e-sports candidate.

God No - Pvp is lame...

First i say YES, to diablo3 eSport. Second to those people who don't want PvP...what u wanna do once u got a powerfull gear? Runs and runs and more runs to monsters and nothing else? Quit the game? Because without PvP that is what will happen. I think the people that cries and complain about PvP is the people that is handles in reality and just got killed in battle of skill...because a game without a good PvP is going to die fast (stop thinking of D2, the time of that game is gone and now all games have some sort of PvP, if u don't like it go try torchlight alone and play it).

you do realize that D2 actually has a quite active PvP community, although the game is not balanced for it. They have made a few tweaks here and there, but largely they just never cared about it as a whole and I see the same thing in D3. Some abilities would just break PvP and then we will have exactly the problem that wow does. A system where they can never balance characters properly because at the end of the day they are complete opposite ways of playing the game,
