I think there should be rated and non-rated arenas, so both non-competitive and competitive players could be pleased.

also, i also do not like any matchmaking system.

Not even oasis active (or the equivalent internet dating website for your region)?

I'm in favour of having achievements and titles over rankings. If they did have rankings I would prefer if you gained points regardless of a win or loss, but obviously more points for a win.

    I'm all for ranked PvP.

There are many that are against it, unfortunately. I think that a system like League of Legends has, would be sweet for both parties. Have ranked AND non-ranked matches. Those that care about pvp and rank progression can play ranked matches. Those that are just in there to fool around and don't want to be have a rank assigned can play in non-ranked matches. /problemsolved

I've actually thought of creating a PvP league website. But before I start anything I want to wait and see whats the general direction Blizzard takes with PvP. When WoW came out PvP was not as important. Now look at what they have done with it. When WoW first came out they would have said stuff like this isn't an e-sport... I don't want to spend a ton of time and have them implement the same thing or something better.

But anyway, simple idea would be to allow users to register teams. You could set your status to "Looking for match" it would match 2 comparable teams based on a rating system and both teams would PvP. After the fight both teams would respond back to the site to say if they won or loss. The site could also host it's own tournaments.

    Anyone interested?

If you know how to program using Ruby on Rails, have design experience, or want to help in other ways get in touch with me. I have both programming and design experience so I could essentially do this by myself but I wouldn't mind help. Maybe turning this into an open source project which could be used for other games.

People will complain about balance anyway even if you dont implement rated arenas and rankings etc. Its how people are, they whine as soon as they get their asses kicked. Imo, there should be both unrated and rated arenas so there are options for both hardcore PvPers and the more casual PvPers. Options have never hurt any1. Perfect balancing is not needed, just fairly balanced like any other game. If its not fairly balanced, not even TDM would be playable.

I like the no rank idea because allows people who dont pvp a lot to have fun without having to worry about if other people calling them shit and constanly bringing up their mmr or for the elitist PvP'ers im sure they would want a rank because it will distinguish them and show others how good they are. WHICH ISNT A BAD THING!! im just saying the no rank can appeal to a wide variety of people and you also get the satisfaction with having achievements that other people dont have and banner customizations and what-not, plus showing how many wins someone has can somewhat show how good they are.. someone can say no it doesnt because (x) persom who is bad can have the same amount of wins as (z) person who is really good.

this is true, but if you were to potentially face that person then you would ultimately find out if they were carried or actually earning those wins.. i do like the sc2 style though, just not to much of a fan of the WoW ranking..

well, the matchmaking system can be in starcraft II, where you can only see # of wins in players' profiles unless they are in master league.

I dont want to see ranks. Will just cause people to whine and cry. I dont want blizzard balancing a PVE game around whiners in PVP. That said, I definitely will be PVPing alot. I really enjoyed that in D2 - I just dont want awesome skills nerfed, since I plan on playing every class.

I know they don't want to have PvP dictate PvE which I totally support but I am ok with PvP being taken seriously. Perhaps down the road PvP will get a more serious section in the way it did within WoW. Of course I am a very casual player and while I know I will PvP a lot I am ok either way with how PvP is handled. I mean they already plan to have certain cd's on spells differ in the PvP realm so I honestly don't mind seeing them refine stuff for a PvP only sphere.

I assume that if PvP is a huge hit (which I am inclined to think it will be) we will probably see at the very least more gametypes and attention to balance in PvP. /shrug

I do like the SC2 approach. Global rankings aren't very helpful. Being ranked 187,872 in the world doesn't mean anything much. But being ranked 1 in your league is good, and breaking it up by divisions gives more concrete goals.

Imo they didn't made a elaborated PvP because they hand't the time to it. The game is considered delayed and late and not even the AH is 100% functional. I think PvP will be theme of a DLC/Expansion/Patch in the far future.

About rankig... After playing many games with and without match making, I think matchmaking systens are bad for the developement of a healthy community. Leagues and organized tournaments in fan websites are much more fun. People actually known eachother, make friends and build up a reputation. In matchmaking people known they will never play with the same person twice in his play life, so theres no reason to socialise or interact.

I know match making allows reduces the time cost of finding a fight, which is good for casual players. But time investment in community sites and forums is something that makes people takes the game more seriously as an hobby.

I think a rankius better then nothing but the ideal would be an tool for private leagues and tournaments.

What you should take and what to give" - Opeth

i dont agree with your take on matchmaking. without matchmaking every player would never meet another person twice. with matchmaking they most certainly will meet ppl who are as good as themselves because you only play versus ppl in the same ELO.
and matchmakind doesnt have to exclude private tournaments/events thats what private games are for.
i actually hope they will implement more PVP features but when there is a ranking, you shouldnt be allowed to play ranked games with your own found/bought equip, just implement a "normal" mode for it
for ranked games there should be like an arsenal of "PvP gear" to choose from because ranking dependent on luck is just plain stupid. it should be dependent on player skill only.
and btw thats how you could make all those RMAH whiners shut up too.

Definitly! I think it's awesome to display that you achieved a certain level of skill in the game..

Just hope that it will matter that you can play your character well to succeed ^^

In the long run, we'll stop having fun in PvP because we dont have anything to aim for. Thats when ranks come in so you have something to work for other then just mindlessly smash people.

Do remember that Blizzard has the skills separated into two different parts one part for pvm the other for pvp so any change to how a skill performs in pvp won't effect how the skill performs in pvm so the only thing that having to balance pvp would take away from pvm is the time that the dev's could put towards improving other things... going on the idea they won't have any dedicated pvp dev's.

That said I'm for no actual numerical rank and I think that the banner additions and the pvp achievements feel as if they should be substantial enough to allow the players something to work towards in the pvp portion of the game.
  • #36
At least a kill death ratio.
  • #37
I understand the thought against it; PvP won't be totally balanced, and if they implement ranks then there we be a lot of screaming because that WD just can't take down a wiz 1v1. Personally I'd like cheevs/titles over ranks, or both =) But I won't be mad if they don't put those in, since the game IS PvE first, according to the majority of the player base, and according to Blizzard itself =D

I just hope there is more for PvP then what they've mentioned. Atleast in a near future. I know everything about PvP in Diablo 3 as im very interested in it. Anyway, these changes they've applied now isnt that bad. I just hope they wont be polishing the game for 6 months now thats all. I'm sick of waiting:( it's been far to long.

As far as I know they actually don't have 2 separate skills for pve/pvm, and actually spoke out against it saying not only is it confusing to suddenly not have your skill work the same, it's just a huge design time drain. Now there are a couple skills that have had their cooldowns lengthened, but that's the extent of it. I'm personally against having two different sets of skills.
