Anybody who has the balls or maybe even "stupidity" to roll Hardcore and dedicate a lot of time has an iron will.
I know for me that doing anything in any game or even in real life........ if there is a substantial chance at that I will have to start over or get backtracked significantly I will hesitate and generally pass it up and find another way. Most of this is due to frustration, but also because starting over sucks.
Imagine you get an (expensive) car, a (hot) gf, and a (high paying, fun) job and one mistake takes you back to only having a bike (inexpensive), one friend that happens to be a girl (not hot) and a new job (low paying, not fun). That would suck balls. And imagine that mistake was something you made that only took a couple minutes to think of and make and you weren't even aware of it at the time.
I'm sure you're thinking like ohhhh games aren't real life, etc. But any time investment is equal to any other time investment. And effort pursuing some girl and effort trying to down inferno isn't all so different. Id argue the girl is more fun and less frustrating most of the time than fighting some unique spawn that hits like a truck. I suppose it depends what girl we're talking about =], but you get the point.
I know it may seem far out there and unlikely, but there are things that can backtrack you pretty fast in life. You usually get more chances and have more awareness than pulling the wrong monster and running away too slow or getting a lag spike, but you get the idea.
Basically all I'm saying is at some point to get a high level character with good gear you have to put in a substantial amount of effort not to mention TONS of time. And something as small as your computer crashing could end up with a deletion!
RISKY BUSINESS RISKYYYYY
Anyways I salute you, you guys are the true heart and soul of gamblers. I'd like to see you guys hit up casinos!
You know, I was pretty young when I started playing D2, and I remember the first time I tried hardcore, I died so early on that I felt exactly the same way as you do now - what's the point in losing all that progress?
As I grew up and became more skilled in the game, I decided to give hardcore another shot, and take it more seriously this time around. Well, I did, and I got way further, but then while doing MF runs, I became so confident in myself that I started slacking off. Inevitably, even though I managed to do 99 runs without getting a scratch, it didn't mean I was immortal, and I lost those few weeks of effort I put into that character.
I was really frustrated over it and kept thinking about how I could've easily avoided the situation, and I only didn't do such and such because it would have cost me a few seconds in completing the run. So I went back to softcore, but it just wasn't the same anymore. Everyone was running in like a maniac and some people kept repeatedly dying.
In hardcore, everyone played as a team, they were organized and grouped together.
In softcore, the object of the game was clear the content asap, which meant any time you spent not attacking was wasted time. There wasn't really any strategy to it, and I felt like I was playing with a bunch of kids again.
After that day, I went back to hardcore and stayed there, with only occasionally going back to softcore to play with friends or because my net was playing up, or there was a storm lurking in the distance, or I was just exhausted and being sloppy or whatever. Just to stay safe.
And it's worth it. The enjoyment I get out of hardcore and the satisfaction of reaching the max level or getting the item you dreamed of finding is just overwhelming sometimes.
lol, i like how you compare it to gambling i guess it would seem to have the same highs an lows
I have allways played the hardcore character. For me its like a constant rush of satisfaction and excitement while my character is alive and progressing through the difficultys and i think i would not get that same feeling if there was no loss attached. I have lost many many many characters and the only losses that really bothered me were the ones to lag or town portal hack players. The legitimit deaths just made me sit back and think of how i could of avoided it and what I will do on the next one to not repeat it
The gameplay and difficulty of D3 may change my HC only experience of Diablo but i wont know till I actually get to play it.
Lol, that's a funny story. I've never played HC on D2, I was planning on it, but got sucked back into other games and such. But I'm definitely planning on giving it a go with D3, to me there must be a reason that it's so addictive and so many people swear by it being the best way to play. But I'm gonna wait a bit and see the content at a more casual pace in SC first, get to know what I should expect so I'm prepared a bit.

I played Diablo a good bit and Diablo 2 to a lesser extent (D2 came at a busy time) for me. In fact I don't think I ever even made it to Hell difficulty on D2. I also never had any interest in playing a HC character. I'm not sure why. I don't think I ever even seriously considered it.
Since then time has passed and I'm actually looking forward to diving into HC for D3 when it's finally released. I think the fear of dying will increase the fun in playing. To people who refer to the "wasted time" on the game, it's a video game so all of the time spent in the game be it SC or HC is "wasted time" in my mind. Video games are an escape from reality, it shouldn't feel like a job or anything close.
hardcore can be heartbreaking to lose a high end character, i think ill do a full runthrough on this game before starting hardcore. and trust me, us hardcore fans fail at casinos, well i do! LOL.
even with no manual stats, your character build will have tons to do with survival, i will make a post soon with some hardcore tips, and things to keep in mind while playing hardcore.
seems like the 2 variables are adrenaline and fear... if you give into the fear of losing a higher character you will never start... if you are willing to go past that for the thirst of increased adrenaline you have your average hcer roflrofl

I must say that hardcore in Diablo 2 was 1 of the most exciting gameplay experiences i have had, Act 2 arcane sanctuary as a barbarian was quite the "ball buster", the most fun part in hardcore is that when you die you learn from your mistakes (hopefully) and the next time you have a better chance passing that section.
And its quite satisfying when you finally manage to get your tactics right and pass a difficult area after trying for days.
Hardcore makes the game totally different and its almost impossible to go back to softcore after getting used to hardcore since there doesn't seem to be an end goal anymore.
