They will give an announcement at least 30 days before the season ends - so not before December 9. They also have a lot of new items and stuff to test for season 2, so there will be a PTR, and that is not even ready to go up anytime soon. I don't expect season 1 to end this year, to be honest.

I must have missed it, but do you have a link to an official/blue post where they state they announce season end 30 days before it does?
Also, at blizzcon, there was a playable demo (even screenshots online of the new zone, taken from playable demo). I did not see everything of the panels, but what makes you say PTR "is not even ready to go up anytime soon"? No skill changes, 1 new zone that does work, only a few new/changed items where they have to tweak numbers (what PTR is for).
From watching the virtual ticket here's what I gathered. In the first panel Josh M. said 'ptr 2.1.2 coming in a couple months'. Then, from the FAQ here: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/16607841/first-look-season-2-11-7-2014 Blizz says we will know about season end at least 30 days before.
Now, PTR will NOT be starting tomorrow, I'd bet money on it, so season 1 will NOT end for OVER 1 month. I don't think the PTR for 2.1.2 is actually 2 months away, that seems pretty steep. I wouldn't be surprised to see PTR this year, then about 1 month of PTR (shouldn't be too long, as the basic stuff is already there), then 30 days of announcement (which may overlap).
My estimate (without any proof) is season 2 starting sometime in the first quarter of 2015. So, not before January, but before April.

Take it for what it's worth.
Oh did he actually say a couple of months for 2.1.2? I could have sworn he said the "a couple of months" when referring to some of the content, which won't be in 2.1.2 but a later patch. I thought that he eludes to 2.1.2 being pretty soon.

Many comments by Travis and Josh made me think that the PTR is still a few weeks away. If the PTR was to start next week they would've dropped that at Blizzcon. They said very often "this is not going on PTR" or "this is all just subject to change and you won't see this on PTR" and so on, which indicates that they still have quite some stuff to tweak before the PTR goes online. I think PTR will go online anytime within the next 2-4 weeks (I can't imagine next week, but I'm also sure it'll be before the holidays). PTR will probably last about 6 weeks (which is the usual PTR uptime at Blizzard for "normal" patches). Which might result in late January, early February season 2 start.
Note that I'm totally just guessing here... I'd be super happy to be wrong and see PTR going live tomorrow

Thx for the link
As for the PTR, they say on the same site: "available for testing very soon on the PTR".
I know Blizzard and Soon(TM) can be a long time, but they added very to it. One can only hope...
