I know that Hellfire rings are unique-equipped, and you can't equip more than one at the same time on the same character. I'm just looking for some clarification regarding a twist.
Can you equip one on your follower and yourself at the same time? If this is possible, what would happen with the bonuses? Would they stack?
In order to make one for strength, dexterity, and intelligence, I take it you would have to log into three characters with those primary stats and make the rings. When you make them, they are "smart-loot" for your character. Make a Hellfire ring on your barbarian, you will get strength most of the time, but if you want a dexterity ring, you'd better make it on a monk for example.
All created Hellfire Rings roll as smart-loot. If you want one with STR, you have to create it with a Barb/Crusader.
About equiping them on followers: Yes, you can both equip the rings at the same tme but only 1/5 of the item's "adventuring stats" (bonus xp, bonus gold, etc) will be added to your Character, so you'll get minimal benefits from those.
Other stats (Main Stats, Damage Bonuses, Critical Chance/Damage) from your follower are not added to your Character in any way.

(In my opinion, not worth the headache of farming keys/organs for a minimal boost - better saving those for the new 2.1 Hellfire Amulet, which will be around pretty soon.)
Actually, I'm not sure you can equip both lvl 60 and 70 Hellfires at the same time. I'm too lazy to search for it right now, but I think there was a blue post regarding that issue near the end of 2.0 PTR/beta.
What I know is that you definitely can't have both Hellfire ring and Hellfire amulet at the the same time (then again, since they both can be equipped on lvl1 character, it is kinda understandable --- lvl1 hero with 1000+ mainstat/vit not counting what you get through paragon points is a bit too unbalanced)

Am I on the right track with my thinking?

I did so with my second account, and my level 60 ring rolled Str, ChC, AS, and LpH, which i rerolled into ChD.
60 ring + 70 ring can be worn at the same time as well, for a grand total of 4 as well.
well worth it.
