How do you not see rolling off a socket, just to add a socket as counter-intuitive?

More to the point, while RG will be a very sought-after item, and one that I'm itching to get my hands upon, it remains a band-aid. The problem is that no weapon without a socketed emerald can even be considered, which effectively means a fair number of all weapon drops are just salvage candidates. Until they fix the root cause, every thing else they introduce will just displace the problem, not solve it.
Would it stem the flood of hot angry tears in this thread if Ramaldini's Gift was changed to: "Add a socket to a weapon; if the weapon already has a socket, instead add a random primary affix" ?

At least that would circumvent the outright imbecilic mentality of "I need to enchant the socket off this weapon so that I can put it back on!"

Well, maybe this is a sign. When D3 launched, they had turned the sockets from an innate, random property of items into an affix and that's been the reason why they couldn't just give us a quest to add a socket as many players had asked for.
Now with this new item type that adds an affix to an item (out of a pool of only 1 potential affix ) they might as well go the distance and remove sockets from the affix pool and use the D2 model again. That'd mean, every item capable of having sockets would roll with a random amount of them independent of all other rolls. And then we could use the rama-gift or other PoE-like stuff to modify these sockets.
These although slightly different would work in my opinion. As with stormie's succinct suggestion it forgives the fact that rolling an innate socket could be damning for the item's lifespan. A seemingly simple fix that would squeeze into the current design.
However what I would like to see is the resurrection of the Diablo 2 socketing system as suggested by solmyr. Removal of sockets from the affix pool, yes? It would be a revamp of the current system complete with its share of invalidation no doubt.

IMO removing sockets from the affix pool is the proper solution. Let RG add a single socket to an item, meaning you'd need to use 3 on a chest, 2 on a leg, etc. Make them not super-rare, but not super-common either.
It's not a super-elegant solution, but it's probably the best one out there and it certainly eliminates the "remove a socket to add a socket" phenomenon.
The way I see it, R-Gift is a useful item which will allow for end-game weapons farmed in 2.1 to be made even more powerful, even if it does require even more farming (you will now farm for 4 best stats instead of 3), I like this concept. The problem, as has already been stated, is the need to roll off the socket and re-apply it using an R-Gift. I would personally suggest not to go so far as to completely remove socket property from affix pool, as this will place newer players, or lower-geared players at a significant disadvantage (my understanding is that removing socket affix from pool makes them only socketable with R-Gift). Instead I would prefer to see guaranteed socket rolls removed from weps, meaning that items can roll with a socket (helpful to newer players), but that it will never be a guaranteed stat (such as on TF).

Somebody also mentioned the issue of restricted gem choice, I agree that there is a huge problem here. Personally I would prefer to see a variety of attack focused options on gems in wep socket (because you use weapons to attack things). I would suggest +x% element dmg where gem type = element type and possibly a CDR gem (although new leg gem could remove any need for this, or make it too OP, particularly on a dual wield build). I think these align better with the effect provided by emerald, another alternative would be to nerf CHD in a similar manner to stacked +x% ele dmg, life% and basically any other % stat (stacking returns less and less added bonus). The problem with dropping CHD effectiveness is that it would reduce dmg output, which nobody wants (not even WD).
But wait there's more...Chest/pants sockets are currently very weak, they're worth having, but the gem effects are in no way comparable to CHD or legendary gems. I would personally like to see these effects change also. As it stands, you will only ever use 3 out of the 5 available gems (primary stat, vit, or res). I would like to see some better options implemented at a later date (because there is a such thing as asking for too much at any 1 time - 2.1 takes time and effort to design, develop. test and implement, and makes drastic changes to all classes). ideal gem changes would be defensive properties such as + thorns dmg, + block/dodge, + melee/ranged dmg mitigation, while retaining vit (or modifying to +% life), and res. I personally feel that these stat types allow for more build variety and would better suit varied playstyles. I also do not place much value on 3x 220 primary/vit as this does not do a whole lot end-game (660 stat points added to the already around 8-9k you had - infinitely more at paragon 800 or above, yes I'm thinking long-term).
Recently made a similar thread, not knowing that this was already here. It is essentially a request for an option to reset your weapon to original state.
Besides that I think the following suggestions may also help with the problem of "incorrectly rerolled weapons".
- Ramadami's gift replaces an affix of choice into a socket: This essentially allows people that are currently not able to roll sockets into getting a guaranteed socket. I believe this was the problem that Blizzard was trying to rectify with this item.
- Ramadami's gift adds a new random new stat if there is already a socket. Now this option kind of presents the problem of being able to "double reroll" your weapon, so it may not be the best option. Perhaps they can check if the socket was natural or rerolled and replace with original rerolled stat if it was a natural socket. This essentially is giving us the option of reseting the weapon back to how it was when dropped.
- Remove Ramadami's gift as it is an item that is not really needed, and the implementation does not seem to rational.
