You're playing along doing your rift or whatever and you hear thatclangthat legendary items make when they drop on the ground..You see the beam ..It's a Sword...and for that moment between killing that last pesky monster and looting it you are in limbo.. you could have found that Shard of Hate you were looking for!
Then you see the silhouette in your inventory.. and PURELY off the silhouette/item art you already know what the item is..
How about instead changing it so that the item art is not visibleuntil you have Identified the item? Think similar to Kadala's items when you are purchasing with Blood Shards.
Sure, it doesn'tchangewhat the item is.If it was going to be shit it would have been shit regardless, but that little crumb of hope can be savored just that little bit longer and add some excitement back to finding items. Purely psychological and petty maybe but I'd like to see it implemented.
(I realise that when the item when it is on the ground will also give away what it actually is.. don't believe me? Drop a Stormshield)
Most times there is enough clutter that you won't see it though.
I kinda like to keep the time between the exciting feeling of finding a green item and the disappointing feeling of finding out it's yet another Blackthorne set item as short as possible.
See, I think that this mentality is the byproduct of D3's crappy loot in general.
We've been almost conditioned into feeling like there are only X number of useful items and the rest are junk.. (even though this is true)
This isn't our fault as players it's just what's happened since launch but I feel that as the item game improves, and I genuinely feel it is still a work in progress, small changes like this one would go some way to making finding items fun again.
It may be a case of egg before the chicken at the moment, but does the idea have merit?
Yeah maybe they should hide the icon in a better way... I mean, right now i pretty much can recognize all the items in game and say if it's going to be 100% crap when i pick it up.
And yeah with rings you just click on them and you can see the graphic without the question mark.
I don't know if this is such an important issue but i wouldn't mind if they changed it to be more hidden. If it stays the same (probably will) i'm happy too.
I like seeing the art first, too. For me, it doubles the experience of anticipation. First, you see a legendary drop, and pick it up, You see the art. That's your first chance to become delighted or disappointed. Then, you identify it. That's your second chance. If you just got generic art until it was ID'ed, you just get it all in one hit.
I'd prefer to see the art, sometimes items don't even need iding and can just straight be salvaged if I know what they look like
I think that is a result of crappy itemization as I mentioned earlier. These items are supposed to rare and desirable. We're supposed to go 'FUCK YEAH' when we see them..
Not 'FUCK YEEE- oh it's just a Blackthorns Amulet'
BUT, you are only salvaging it because the pool of desirable items is so small compared to the ocean of trash.
WHEN (if) the items continue to improve, could you see the merit of this particular change? Or would it be meh
I don't know. As much as i don't want to bring Diablo 2 into the discussion, you knew already what the unique you dropped was by the item type that dropped unidentified.
I kinda like being able to remember the art style of an item when i check it before the identification, just a memory training
I know it's sad to check the art of the amulet and seeing it's a Blackthorne, but the disappoitment won't be any less when you identify it without seeing the icon, it's just delayed.
The glas shalf full side of you even loaded you're answer with "disappointment"
I'd prefer to not have to interrupt runs to indentify stuff; and I like that I can have (like tonight for example) an Akkhan's Gloves in my bag that I *know* are Akkhan's gloves; waiting till the end of the run to ID and see the stats.

I was just thinking about this the other day.
hands down yeah, I think it should be hidden. I want my disappointment or joy to set in at the end of the cast bar, not when I open my bag.
The current iterationcontradicts itself.

Might I ask you what is it about knowing what the item is before ID'ing that you like?
Imagine a world where the happiness you feel when you get that item you wanted and see its stats happened at the same time though?
Instead of reading the last chapter of the book.. then reading it from chapter 1 afterwards lol
I like knowing how their tits are before the bras even come out... that answer is too good. Can't pass it up.

You get either the gold beam or the green beam and the item in your inventory is just a ? until you ID it. Is that what you meant, Sigma?
Lot's of half glass empty mentalities out there.. "you are just delaying your unhappiness etc."
The glass half full side of me prefers to cling to "you are giving yourself the opportunity to be completely delighted" once you've ID'd the item.
