So basically there's a chance that the element my ability uses will be changed in the near future, meaning I either need to change all my gear to that element or change the abilities I use.... Why? If it were a nerf id get it like the shard of hate but this isn't... This doesn't actually do anything, if my ability gets changed to lightning then I put on all lightning gear and do the same damage as I was before so this doesn't change anything all it does is force me to farm gear all over again.
I think they are probably just going to change a few runes on specific abilities so that they are more diverse. You can probably probably just pick another rune and be fine.
Because as it stands now most elements correspond with a type of rune; lightning stuns, cold for bigger aoe radius / slows, ect. Fire seems to almost always be for a pure dps increase which is making it the best element type and narrowing skill choices.

The other issue with fire is that you can stack more fire skill damage than any other element. Also cindercoat reduces the resource cost, and I don't know of any equivalent items for any other element. It would be nice if they introduced some new legendaries in the next content patch to help balance out the other elements from a gear standpoint.
If it's stuff like adding a little diversity to allow for more synergy like people have said how they would like to use haunt in say a fire or poison WD build but can't because every rune is cold then I totally get that... I just fear that there simply using this as an excuse to artificially increase the longevity of the game such as taking the currently more popular abilities such as HotA (smash) and changing it's elements so that people need to farm more to get back to where they was and given how Blizz have been recently I wouldn't put something like this past them.
If it's issues with fire simply being OP because of certain items, such as cindercoat and magefist then wouldn't it make more sense to bring other options up to this level instead of swapping elements around?
My problem is definitely that Fire is strong not simply because it has all the strong runes, but because with Cindercoat and Magefist, as well as really good +Fire weapons both 1h and 2h for Maximus, you can push your Fire bonus MUCH higher than you can with other damage types.
More build diversity would be had with more elemental options in various gear slots.

This. Build diversity is a good thing, having to stack specific skills due to their element pretty much forces you to run a certain build in most cases. This just expands on the opportunity for people to try other skills or combine different ones they wouldn't have been able to before.

Eh I'd say other gear sets are pretty close if not even with the +20spell dmg bonuses. Fire might be the only one one that has a chest otherwise most other pieces are even.
I think that most of the upcoming changes will just be adding diversity to skills whose runes are primarily one element; for example, Fist of the Heavens is all lightning except the first rune.
However, I don't think every element needs a 'theme'; I mean, I don't want every lightning skill do something stun-oriented or every cold skill do something chill-oriented because those things don't need to stack. Those elements also need heavy-hitter type aspects as well.
Also, if fire is going to continue doing the most damage, then it should have the least amount of gearing options to improve the damage further; fire should be the option if you don't want to stack +elemental on your gear, and if you want the utility options associated with the other elements, you should be able to stack +elemental to catch up to fire.

I think the longevity of the game is fine. I haven't even finished gearing my wizard to my liking and I still have 5 more alts to play. Without new content or changes, I could see myself playing for another year (at the minimum).

Cold has Frostburn, but lightning, poison, physical and holy have nothing for the slot, and nothing but fire has a chest slot. Fire has more weapon options than anything as well, and holy has nothing but a 1h flail. Cold has only Azurewrath and Utah's Roar. Poison has nothing at all, not even among ceremonial knives. Physical in particular has nothing in any slots other than Doombringer as a 1h, I believe.
Bonus elemental stacking is one of the most potent dps stats you can have for many builds.
More items to support other elementals is also a must in my book. Wizard got a few frost items that can work, but fire is so much better for most classes.
The changes to runes is long overdue. I found a decent azurewrath with strength for my barb and wanted to make a frostrelated build, but there are NONE thats even remotely good. Only decent frostskill for barb is avalanche, and its still worse than the fire one. WD is stuck in the same position as well. Wizard is maybe the only class that can make alle elements work somehow.
And while you are at it, why is there even 1h flails? Why would anyone not use a 2h as crusader? Give me a 2h flail with + holydmg please.

I can see what you see not. Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone. Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be. Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind. Cast down into the Halls of the Blind
From a crusader POV we have very little variation in element type. The Majority of our skills have 0 or 1 variant, which is nice if you only want to stack one element type but doesn't lead to much variety. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do

Name a skill that no one uses. Good. Thats going to get changed to a different element. Name a skill with a million runes that change its element to the same thing. Good, those will be changed.
They arnt going to nerf builds they are going to buff neglected skills so they can actually be used. Least thats my understanding.
IE: Monks have Seven Sided strike, which has runes to make holy.. and one physical I believe. That means that only two elemental types will use this ability. Blizz is going to make it so one of the runes is say, fire, or lightning or cold so more builds can have access to SSS if they wish.

Acid Cloud 5 runes all poison.
Haunt 5 runes all cold
Spirrit barrage 5 runes all cold
Locus swarm 4 runes poison. 1 fire.
Overall WDs have the worst element diversity ATM.
And its hard to make anything good themed around booth a playstyle and an element.
Would love to see a fire and poison rune for spirit barrage and Haunt.
and a cold rune for acid rain and locus swarm.
Would open up a lot of element diverse builds for the WD.

That said, I decided not to be a dick and found the blue post for you.
