Right now, what I feel is almost everything is dropping for my class that I play...
this is not smart... why?
1. I play with wizard and i use templar for follower which needs str on gears. With current system, i cannot find anything for my follower, even shields come with int which i guess no wizard is using... I need to play with right class to get gear for my followers (monk / demon hunter to get gear for scoundrel)
2. I dont have / play with barbar class, but I use templar as follower with my wizard / monk / witch doctor / demon hunter. and I cannot find any gear for my templar (similar issue as above). I need to have a barbar class to get gears for my templar followers
3. I dont like to play with low geared characters until they are good enough. I prefer playing with my best character and find some gears for my alts until they are fun to play... current system is forcing me to play with same character to have fun. Remember, we had the same problem with MF & Paragon 1.0. MF was not shared and we stuck to best / strongest / highest paragon to get more drops... Now we have similar issue with "Smart Drop"
4. I have all best gear, and I am really having fun to play with my favorite class, I dont need to farm better gears for him/her, but I will love to get gears for my poor alts...
Solution is "Smarter Drops" which is smarter than "Smart Drops"
add a select box to game options, say "Smart Drop Choice"
Smarter Drops
Please select Smart Drop Target: a select box here, with following options
Default (for the classs that we play)
Select a class (list of classes here)
OFF (RNG)
Default is what we have right now, which I hate (actually dont hate but to have this all the time, just irks me).
2nd option, selecting target of Smart Drop is what I want to have: Play with my favorite class and find gear for my alts (or friends) until they are good enough, fun to play with
3rd option is pure RNG, the old system. Here No matter what class we play, we get gears for all classes randomly... which I want to have as well... gives us FREEDOM
Also, this choice will affect the crafting same way...
You are playing with a wizard, and you play with a friend which is Monk. He has really poor gears and you don't need any better ones for yourself... You set the target to "Monk" and play with him/her and give all the monk items as a gift...
1. Yeah, the follower is an issue, but I've managed to gear mine out without issue just playing the game (just leveled a WD after 2.0 dropped). I would like it if the system took your follower into account.
2. Same complaint as #1.
3. Well, ok, but that's probably not what most people do. I for one don't see that as being fun at all. I would rather play the character I am trying to gear up and progress while playing.
4. Again, same complaint as the one before it.
I like smart drops, but I don't like finding str and dex gear on my Wiz 80% of the time. I prefer the current system but, as I said before, would like to see a few more drops for my follower(s).

this is what option 1 is for, current "Smart Drop" system, which is default... suggested system does not affect the ones who loves current system at all...
but option 1 / current system may be a little bit smarter and can drop 75% for character playing, the rest can be for follower we have... right now, i feel like almost everything has either int+vit or just vit if I play with wizard even if finding a stupid ring for follower is pain...

Right, I believe I was agreeing with most of your post, just not some of your implementation ideas. I like smart loot in general, I would just prefer it to be a bit more... dumb I guess.
Don't forget that in RoS there is the mystic and she can reroll stats on gear. For instance, right now i have 2 sky spitters with perfect stats for a wizards, High Int, High Vit, and IAS. When RoS comes out I will be able to change the Int roll to Str and it will be just as potent on my Barb or Crusader.
Your idea is a very good one! But, not entirely necessary plus it will cause players to play like they did in D2. In D2, most players had a certain class for MF. Most played a Hammerdin or Cold Sorc because they were the fastest and most efficient. The results won't be exactly the same but I think it can be agreed upon that currently the most efficient class atm is the WIzard.
I think this is really a problem and I liked your ideas speacially 2. idea , it shouldnt be hard to add a option like this, than everybody can choose 'smart drop area' they want:cheers:
I agree (mostly) with the OP: smart drops are great, but they do make it tougher to gear out alts. I like the idea of being able to turn off smart drops all together; I don't like the idea of being able to change it to a specific class, as I think that has the potential for a lot of abuse.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
I like smart drops, a lot actually. But you are correct, it is an issue. Blizzard said at one point, that they didn't like how players would feel forced to play whatever their highest paragon level was, because that gave them the best stats and highest chance to get loot. Which is why they said they moved Paragon to the system it is today. But then they added smart drops, which creates the exact same problem all over again.
My solution, would be to have both. No option to toggle between them, but instead of smart drops just giving you a ton of loot with the primary stat of whatever you are currently playing, I would like to see smart drops just increasing the odds that you receive class specific loot for the character you are currently playing, then just leave the rest of the loot as it was before.
I really enjoyed loot how it was before, and I like it how it is now as well. With one major dislike. I cannot stand to constantly be rewarded with loot that has int on it, loot that would otherwise have been good for another class/follower. Sure, we could use the Mystic to change a stat. But that forces us then to always be using the Mystic to change the primary stat to suit another class, rather than being able to use the Mystic to tailor items to our play style and such. Another thing I can't stand currently, is running around with my chosen class trying my best to get a piece of class specific gear, or another piece to my set. Class sets now are really powerful for most of the classes, and going forward I imagine them to become even better. There are also a lot of build altering class specific items such as mojos/sources that would allow us to do entirely different things with our characters. Class specific loot is more important than ever. And I would really love to see smart drops being geared more towards rewarding us with those types of items, rather then just putting int/str/dex on every single item that drops and calling it "Smart". I also really enjoyed how it was before, finding an amazing item that could be used for an alt, and instantly switching over to try and make a new build around that item.
TL:DR - Make smart drops increase the chances of getting class specific loot/set items rather than just rolling the primary stat of your class on everything that drops. And go back to allowing you to get any kind of drops outside of those specific "Smart drops"
for me, i like the current drop system, it doesn't bring too much trash (what i called the useless item) to me, and all leg i got the stat is good better than before, 9 out of 10 need to be brim. so, I'm not totally agree with this post
And yeah, a lot of us has been pointing those problems since early F&F started. It's a feedback that seems to fall on deaf ears, because even on the dev streams they apparently avoided these questions.

also 'mystic' is a solution but not good enough
