RoS - not until next year. BUT:

Isn't it a bit early to say "the expansion will be released next year" (check Athene's interview with D3 game director)? I forsee a great decline in RMAH use and even less players online if we have to wait 6-12 months. Why would Blizzard let us know this many details about the expansion so soon, unless they plan on release before christmas?

Just a thought. I don't mind waiting, but it seems a bit odd.

    Thoughts?

The exp will be a 2014 release - This is on Blizzards official site and information

With that said - it could easily (and probably be) early 2014
Also with that said - the Pre-patch will come before the expansion - That could hit in 2013 for all we know
  • #3
    The game seems playable.

I expect the beta to start within 1month and if the beta goes well and no new ideas(3 month standard). This Christmas looks very logical and possible. If not early 2014.

They do the same for WoW, they announce an expansion 9-12 months before the release to build up expectations. Diablo 3's community had a huge need of news for this game recently and the best way to satisfy the playerbase was to drop the RoS Bomb.

Some players will stop playing knowing that everything they do now it will be useless; others, like me, will get back to D3 and play a bit more with a good feeling for the future.

It's a calculated risk, drop of profits and playerbase happens everytime in every game when it gets stale, but the important part is too keep the interest high for the next patch so you mantain a community.

It says on the official d3 RoS website that it will be comming 2014. I guess that's a pretty good source.

The official site specifically says "Coming 2014". While Blizzard is notorious with release dates I have never seen them release something early. I commented that Open Beta after Blizzcon would be nice but I think that's a pipedream. The game looks to be in a decent state at the moment but I am sure lots of work is still ahead of them. If the game is out by May 2014 I will be impressed.

Because they also released information on Loot 2.0 / Paragon 2.0 which is a patch that will come before the expansion and the patch may come before the end of the year. The patch itself may come at the same time as the Expansion but nothing is clear yet.

Well, assuming that the expansion of D3 probably is a competitor for the next expansion of wow, an early 2014 release seems logical. That way then can release the Wow expansion just after the summer of 2014 and announce a new annual pass deal + RoS release date at Blizzcon. By what I see of it, the act and crusader looks pretty polished as it is and the proposed system changes are quite well received.

This keeps coming up and will continue until something official is announced. If WoW patching is an indication they seem okay with long(ish) droughts in content prior to an expansion. I think they shot themselves in the foot talking about Loot 2.0 as a stop gap before the xpac and maybe they didn't realize the scope of work and implications when they said something. If we don't see something prior to RoS it's going to be a bit of a gamble for Blizz but I think they feel confident that people will come back regardless. Risk versus reward at this point.

If the expansion is out before 2015 i'll be surprised... After the speed of other Blizzard products I have little faith left in release times.

First, OP...yeah, they said it on the official site, "coming 2014." Does that mean January, July, December 2014? No idea...however, as many people want to poke fun at Blizzard when they hear "Soon(TM)"...the last couple times devs or CMs said that, in regard to patches, they really meant it. "Soon(TM)" means more to me than it used to. So when they say they can't wait to release the expansion, it may be 2014, but Q1 2014 may not be impossible.

As for the chain of events that could occur coming soon, well...in regard to some new WoW expansion, like WoW or not, there's certainly much more to keep people busy with in WoW than there is in Diablo 3, even with no expansions and just a subscription. That being said, the Loot 2.0 and Paragon 2.0 patch content (and I believe they said Loot Runs and Nephalem Trials might also be packaged in with that, POSSIBLY, don't quote me on that) will be coming before the expansion, as they're "adjustments to game systems that will come as patches for free," they confirmed that.

But if you think about it, loot is one of the few major issues of contention left for D3 critics, and by the looks of it, they're giving loot an ENORMOUS boost in quality, upgradability, etc. And Paragon 2.0, if it comes as advertised and isn't changed too drastically, will seriously be amping up build diversity, in terms of what gear people want to acquire, and how they want to acquire it. In general, Paragon points will give everyone's characters a huge boost, allowing them to farm places they weren't able to before. They farm places for a little while and start looting their own upgrades, without the AH, they'll continue along that path, experimenting, trying new builds with build-changing legendaries (and perhaps set items, they haven't dealt with that yet, I don't think), and so on and so on...

And that's BEFORE Reaper of Souls is released, and the expansion raises the level cap, gives people even more skills and runes to play with, stronger gear, more to explore and dive into, etc.

At least, that's my take. They can wait on a WoW expansion. Right now, they need to tend to Diablo a bit more, and they seem to be doing that. In one of the interviews, Josh was asked some question about some big issue, and he just grinned and commented...

    "Wait for Blizzcon," ;-)
Pre AH-shutdown Transcendence/Spirit Regen build, used only found and crafted gear and gems, could handle MP7.

Newest interview taken from PlayersCutTV: D3 Reaper of Souls YES or NO interview with Josh Mosqueira in Gamescom 2013. He revealed many secrets of D3 Reaper of Souls lore never opened to the public.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaP6aWGzWp0

One example: We are gonna see the Pandemonium Fortress (which, apparently, has changed drastically from D2) and more in RoS.

Another: There is a definite chance that we'll encounter one or more of the Evils from D2, since Josh replies "Maybe."

Big-ass example: We will get Beta this year. This year!!! :D
    "God? What's that?"

The time release range between starcraft 2 and starcraft 2 heart of the swarm was a year and 8 months and so far the time laps between diablo 3's release and Reaper of souls is a year and somewhat 4 months, its not like they release them at the same period of time but i asume it'll hit the market in january/feb due to the huge information they've given us so far and the informations thats coming in the near future.

Anyhow could patch 2.0 be playable on the public test client earlier than release maybe before new year?
  • #14
I honestly think the activity of the RMAH has little bearing on anything relating to release dates. It's just bonus money for Blizzard in-between release dates and I highly doubt they are relaying on the income to make or break their business. If anything I feel D3's activity is at a low point right now and this announcement of the expansion will temporarily get people playing again for a couple of months.

we might see a beta, but It would probably be in December/January depending upon their release date. The reason the beta for D3 was done so early was because they were testing so many new features and functions. With this expansion you won't be seeing nearly as much in terms of new mechanics and game design. You will not see RoS released in 2013 so I don't know why there is speculation on that. Blizzard has given you the year of 2014 and when have we ever known blizzard to release anything early or 'on-time'. cough every game they've ever done, cough.

It may be a huge change in diablo 3 but its still an expansion not a new franchise emerging, i doubt they'll postpone a given release date for an expansion

I didn't really say they would postpone this, but they've done it in the past. Like i said, they don't give release dates until they are 100000000% sure its ready. You will never see them give you a date until several months before release.
