Sure, you can certainly work around it with shift-clicking, and as other people have suggested, force move.
But simply having an option to be unable to pick up items that aren't showing their label will completely remove this problem without the faffing about that we need currently.
This force move thing isn't an honest solution imo. This is a matter of poor design and interceding commands arriving from the same button.
How exactly? You move using a button... and it won't pick up anything. Exactly what you are asking for my friend. Oh cuz it's not bound to the mouse left click? really?... I'm pretty sure Blizzard won't implement anything like /nopickup since it's already in the game in one form or another.
I believe this is going toward play-style and build use. I use a combo strike build. I change targets while applying X-palm tags repeatedly while constantly and consistently switching 'clicks' to and fro, all while NOT MOVING.
The Force Move command is great for slithering out of dense packs without miss-clicking on loot or monsters......it's also great for chasing Gobs out of dense packs.
What Force Move does NOT address, is when you are stationary and consistently depressing left/right/left/right/left/right.....When this is your melee build, you pick-up items without desire to do so, often causing an interruption in combat, as well, picking up junk that you do not want.
Again, /nopickup isn't intended to relieve miss-click while moving. It's a combat feature more-so than anything.
I think this is going a bit too far guys... Toggle magic items off? why won't they just remove them from the game and be done with it?
They won't do that. I guess they should just make the functionality of the left mouse click the same as forced move whenever you are not clicking on a monster but that might hold some technical difficulties.
I don't understand why you think that they should spoon feed you with shit just so you won't have to get used to something. And how the hell is pressing "W" and "Shift" counter intuitive?
I'm not going to "sign" this because i don't think it is a matter of urgency. If they implement that, good. If not, what the hell, i'll live on. Besides, ideas that are alot better or mechanics that make more sense are not being exactly "signed" so yeah...
I have no interest in a loot toggle. Though there can be issues with that as well, that is not my goal at all.
If you have too many blues and white on the screen, you may have to pick up a few pieces of junk to get the Demonic Essence to show (for example), but to me, this isn't a primary concern. This doesn't interrupt combat.
Miss-clicking on ANY loot does, and it seems quite intuitive to allow the player to disable the pick-up command with a toggle so that this never happens.....so that players can feel free to assign generators (primary attacks) to any button they wish.
As we see above, we have another Monk using Combo Strikes having issue with this. He's being forced through bad mechanics to use his secondary generator on his keyboard, while he would rather have it bound to his mouse.
To me (and many many others) it just seems intuitive, smart and functionally sound to be able to bind pick-up and attack (whatever attack you choose) to left-click while having a toggle switch to differentiate which command the player wishes to execute.
Since launch, my main changed from my Wizard to my Monk. And although experimenting with Combo Strike builds myself, I really don't encounter this problem much, if not at all.
I am okay with adding my voice to the pile when it comes to avoiding loot for combat and protection purposes. You are right, especially now that mob density is leading to considerably weightier loot explosions and piles, that trying to escape but clicking on loot isn't conducive to safe combat. While I haven't had many problems ESCAPING due to loot, I have had issues clicking BETWEEN loot to attack. So I guess I can agree with you on that.
Then again, I'm a found and crafted player only, so I do pick up blues, and if I need to pick some up to get to the monsters I want to kill, really doesn't matter. I admit that my characters are all beyond blues being viable to use, and I don't even check blues anymore to see if they are, I just vend them...
So while I agree in part with this, I need to disagree in another part.
Honestly, I didn't even know D2 had a /nopickup function, then again, D2 seems almost DOS based in how many "command prompt" functions there were, it was really surreal. Though, you don't think this will change today with the 1.0.8a patch that fixes the Item Label Display bug? I've wanted that to change that in my options for a long while, but it never updates. Now that it's fixed, I can probably change it so that item labels ONLY show when I hold ALT. That's how I want it, so I'm not busy clicking on item labels when I want to engage bad guys or move around.
Seems to me like that might fix your problem, no? I mean, it seems to be that you don't like picking up blue items, but when there aren't any bad guys around, you can click whatever you want at your leisure and not be in any danger. It's during battle when it gets bad, and with this fixed, seems like it'll be easier to accomplish what you want.
The problem gets even worse when you have high ping, Once your char starts picking up an item, it won't stop until the server confirms that you picked it up, so I'm basically stunned for 0.3 seconds everytime I pick up an item on accident.

Not really. Because you can still pick up items that don't have a label showing. As a CMWW I do it all the time and it really gets on my nerves.
That's what a /nopickup or equivelant would stop.

I know you can pick up items without a label showing. I did it in D2 all the time if clicking labels for little gold piles proved too much like Tetris. I'm just saying it seems like it would get better, at least. Without a ton of Item Labels floating around during battle, realistically, there's a hell of a lot LESS to click on by mistake.
Yes, this wouldn't eliminate the problem 100%, but it would/should reduce it drastically. I'm trying it out first thing when I get home tonight.
In the meantime...hope this crusade goes well. Just because I may not take advantage of such a feature doesn't mean others wouldn't be happier by it, :-)
Bumping this up. Please help by going to the thread and bumping it as you see fit. Lots of support so far. Thread is highly rated, 9 pages of near unanimous support. Sadly, not so much as even a nod of acknowledgement from a Blue.
Patience, I'll keep fighting the good fight and hopefully it'll get some acknowledgement soon.
Well, you have my support, of course. It's pretty annoying seeing my character running away from the fight because i miss clicked an item on the ground while i stutter, kite, whaver i am doing at the moment.
One thing i would like to say is: don't get paranoid over a Blue response, i'm confident they've read your thread and the feedback is noted (or at least this is what i believe since WoW).

Yeah...I feel confident that it's been viewed. If this is an issue that the devs see as a valid concern, I'm sure they'll act on it.
It would just be nice to get a nod that this has been passed "upstairs". Mainly so that I don't feel the need to bump it for the next 6 months. :Thumbs Up:
Principally, I want players to understand that when junk loot unintentionally appears in their inv, whether it's a little or a lot, whether this issue is big or small to them, that this should never happen. You should never pick-up junk loot unintentionally. The fix is so easy.
Yep, it is. That's one of the things you ask yourself: "Why the **** Blizzard didn't keep all those good quality of life features from Diablo 2 at release?" I don't think no one can aswer that, but i think what happened: a brain fart from the dev team!
(Warning: my comment is not intented to be disrespectful towards Blizzard or its devs, i'm just joking)

Everytime I see the preferences for loot label display in our Gameplay Options menu that gives you three choice in regard to label display, I smh wondering why the hell there's no toggle for the actual loot?
This was an acknowledgement that loot displays can cause a disturbance to the players. I say....what about the loot itself?
Well, finally got a response from Vaeflare on this issue. I was happy to have it acknowledged, frankly. It let'sme know that they're aware of the problem.
We agree that it can be annoying when you accidentally pick up loot, but rather than add additional options to the game, we’d rather look at ways to reduce the overall number of items on the ground, while increasing the overall quality of dropped loot. Going forward, we’d like to make it seem like every item has a reason to be picked up at various points in the game.
In effect, it was suggested that the way to solve the problem was by not solving it. Rather, by making it so that the problem occurs less often.
Suffice to say, the players response to Vae's post was not one of joy, rather, confusion and bewilderment.
So with that, I can say I tried. I tried really hard. Daily bumping for 6 weeks. Using 2 different fansites to promote my thread. I tried.
I'd be happy to not have this option if sorting specific white items would have a use on crafting. Would actually give us a reason to even look at them.
Sad to see they can't implement such a simple quality of life change while we wait for that big change

I feel like Vae missed my point. That is, I don't want to accidentally pick up ANYTHING during a fight. I don't want to accidentally click on an iLvL63 Legendary during a fight, I'll get it in 20 seconds when this nasty pack of Elites is felled.
Either way, I'm guessing that it will get implemented in the long term. In the end I feel confident that they'll see the issue should just be fixed and the feature should be implemented along with better quality of loot/less "useless" loot falling.
When i read Vae's response, i facepalmed.... He totally missed the point of the suggestion and he only teased us with a future itemization patch that will come "soon". Damn, even Josh, the new lead director, teased us with that...
I think we need to make the point clear about /nopickup, or at least clearer to CMs.

I'll take the teasing and veiled hints over silence. I was confused by Vae's response though. It's almost as if he/she was thinking that I was suggesting a loot toggle for players to filter out blues/whites, even though Vae clearly acknowledged what it was I was suggesting.
Even the oft times biased MVP's (greens) have posted their confusion over Vae's response. Very odd to say "we agree that it can be annoying" and then proceed to say the best way to fix it is to fix something else that will lessen accidental pick-ups.
If a part on my car was broken and causing a breakdown, and I took it to the mechanic and he said he could fix the problem by replacing another part than the one the is broken, which should decrease my breakdowns.....well I'm not sure I'd accept that answer.
