How will an expansion work with these numbers?

How exactly will an expansion work?

People are now reaching 300k-400k dps in mp10, where in mp0 you can finish the game with like, 15-20k dps easily if you have good defense.

So people would be entering the theoretical act 5 with insane offensive and defensive capabilities..?
It seems like the range between an amazing/great item and a decent to bad item is waaayy too large. Besides PvP being FUBAR'd, I can't see how an act 5 would work.

By the time an expansion comes out, people will have even better gear than now. Coupled with the fact that stuff that isn't absolutely perfect will be very cheap, people will be able to just buy stuff off of the AH to do the next act super fast unless it's tightly tuned which caused massive uproar at launch.

We really don't know what state the game will be in a year from now, and I wouldn't expect an expansion much sooner than that.

Hmm, that's not a valuable statement, The current state of the game was pretty accurately foreseen around launch. Furthermore, only a cataclysmic change would decrease the current inflation of power across all characters.

Maby it'll be like LoD where the gear just got better and you could do more damage. Although the dmg went up be like 10-20k tops from Classic to LoD in some cases like the hammerdin. I'm assuming they will introduce item level up to 65 perhaps.

I can totally see they introduce a ladder system with the expansion to solve this problem. They need to reset gears or make old gears irrelevent like wow xpac or people will run out of things to do real quick.

I kind of hope they'd just patch in more gear. They probably could, and most would be happy with that. Why wait for an expansion. I mean, sure there are those who can run MP10 right now, but they're not exactly face-rolling it yet. I'd imagine most players with BiS everything would be happy to just have another carrot to chase.

It'd be even cooler to have some new ilvl 63+ plans to fill that gear gap for a bit. Both legendary and rare. Just to give crafting some appeal.

With many games coming out with DLC the week of release I wouldn't be surprised to see an expansion sooner rather than later. That said, this game isn't intended to be a long term game like WOW... they are trying to level balance and make it as good as possible, but it will never have the long term support and changes that D2 or WOW had/have. They won't introduce 64+ level equipment because that would instantly destroy all of the old equipment, and that would alienate more people than it would bring.

I see more event style stuff/areas getting introduced. More stuff like Hellfire rings, uber fights, pony level, etc.

Why shouldn't you be able to just "zip" through a new act? Inferno acts (theoretically) are all one big same difficulty. You don't grind the early part of an act until you can tackle the later one. Much more so now with MP0 inferno being so weakened. You don't have to spend any time grinding or AHing softcore to get through now. Hell people are going to see all the content anyway when they faceroll through normal mode. This is exactly how D2 worked.

If they make Act 5 just slightly more difficult then it would work fine. MP0 players could manage with 15k dps while those 300k+ MP10 guys would take act 5 nearly the same rate they've done everything else. Maybe they will up the MP ceiling to 15 or so. Add some kind of new stuff to grind (ilvl 64, or heck some COSMETIC options which have been woefully neglected) and you are set.

They could of course do more and insanely inflate numbers like LoD did, but there's no reason they have to.

This game is broken. They need to re-balance everything which would end up making a ton of people cry and quit.

D3 has to much damage being dealt in the simplest way.. I remember being a newbie and seeing a weapon doing 600 damage and thinking to myself "really"? You could only imagine my thoughts about gear/skills criting for a million.

Now, this game is nothing but a crit gear orgy. Its bland, dull and utterly broken in my opinion.

Actually, with each major patch, they made changes that destroyed some of the current equipment : First, the ias nerf, then the legendary buffs, and lately, the ilvl 63 jewelry and (non weapons) class items.
I'm not saying it's bad (actually, I think it's good), I'm just saying they are doing it all the time !

The addon will likely bring a new class, and maybe that class has a new primary stat (although STR is only for barb, so they probably going to fill that), but there are a lot of class specific items with skill features. Nobody would have any items to do that. So at least for me an Act V would mean, I play the new class and chase new items, totally see that working for me.
  • #12
Based on the severe lack of content, (3 and a half acts) there should be at least two new acts. And the final boss had better be epic god damn it! Some new classes would be nice too.

Chances are, they will stick with there normal pattern.

They will introduce Act 5, it will be tuned for "average" players, it will be too hard for 50% or more of the players, everyone will cry, and then they will nerf it until everyone can do it. Or make loot much easier to get so the casual gamer with low DPS and minimal time invested can gear up enough to plow through Act 5. This will take several months to happen, then we will be right back where we were....

People will forget about MP0 difficulty, everyone will have 400k+ DPS, and the AH will still be destroying the item hunt.
I am very hopeful they can at least fix the loot economy, and find a way to make farming feel rewarding.....but this far in and not even an acknowledgement there is an issue doesnt make me feel too confident in Blizzard right now. Other than the leg fix (which wasnt really addressing the whole loot issue) Wilson and his team have never admitted the AH destroyed the game, or how they plan on fixing it.

End game is one of the biggest challenges in RPGs.

This is a very good point OP brings up.

D3 is by no means close to perfect, or close to how perfect it will become. D2 changed and grew a lot in the first 2 years after launch, and we can expect D3 to get much better.

It seems the most important thing we can offer is constructive advice and analysis instead of adversarial complaints and disgust.

Everything but the absolutely godly items becoming very cheap is a very likely issue.

More useful (very very useful) gold and crafting can help with that. If gold and crafting supplies were truly top commodities, then even the most basic legendaries would have value.

A5 will be as easy as the rest of the game. Why shoud they complicate the game which is made for the RMAH users? If you look for a challange in D3 you should switch to another game.

The damage dealing in this game is so simple and broken, you can buy cheap gear and crit millions of damage easyli without any struggle to get there. You don't have to even think about your build, you can't fuck up anything in you char/build so the damage dealing is perfect for everyone.
Just stack crit chance, crit dmg, att speed + main stat and you've got yourself a dps machine. If you played any other good h&s games in the past you know that something isn't right if you don't even need to make any effort to get the dps on the decent level (oh ok you need time and luck to grind the alkaizer run thousand times before you get something to sell).

I think the A5 will be nothing special.
The game needs ladder system, better crafting, different itemization, some new items (like runes) and also it needs to be more difficult.
In my opinion we will get the new crafting, runes and maaaaaybe ladders in the distant future.

My guess is they'll cheese it with warcraft and the xpac will add a new area, 10 new levels, and new a profession and/or class!!11one

Well, WoW actually went through quite a few itemization/stat overhauls over the years. Wrath, then Cataclysm saw some major item and stat overhauls, and I haven't played Pandaria, but I wouldn't be surprised if they further changed things up. So it's not out of the question that we'd see some shift in itemization/stats whether drastic or minor.
