Not sure if its just me, but it seems that Fire in generally does a LOT more damage than other elements. Molten (as a melee) kills me VERY quickly, and thats with 40khp and 700 all resist. Anytime I see fire under their feet, I get that, "Awwwww crap" moment. I don't honestly remember it being THIS much of an issue prior to 1.04. Did they change it? Or am I just slow in realizing?
Also, it's plenty clear that molten and desecrator tick for low damage numbers but at a VERY fast rate. Watch your HP globe when you're stuck in molten/desecrator. It doesn't move in chunks, it's just like watching water drain out of a bathtub.... but very fast.
I think there is simply a problem with how fast molten and desecrator are ticking.
Molten actually does less damage now than it did before, as a singular entity. Perhaps there is truth to it 'stacking' when multiple lines of it are crossed at a particular point, but in general, it is much less dangerous than it was prior to the patch.
I've actually noticed that fire damage in general kicks my ass far more than other types of elemental damage. As a barb with ~900 all resist, I can stand in plague spots all day long in act 2 and have no problem. Electrified is an easy-mode affix - I never notice a problem. Arcane beams are only a problem if I get stuck in between 3 or 4 converging beams, otherwise I don't even bother to move out of them. But standing in molten or desecrator spots equals almost immediate death. The guardians that do fire damage that are commonly found in the VoA in act 2 also destroy me in seconds as normal white mobs. If I happen to get a champion pack of them with molten and/or desecrator, I have to skip them.
I'm not insanely geared, but I have 41k hp, ~900 resist all, and >9k armor with war cry. I can tank most of act 2 just fine, but fire = death. I'm not sure why.
One of the few things that can kill my WD pets despite 500all res, 5k armor and 3k hps - it's desecrator's pool under them. Insane damage. Even Plagued+Molten+Electrified isnt' enough to kill them. But Desecrator... Considering 3k hps+new force armor - desecrator needs to tick VERY fast. Much more than twice a second.
I was going to edit my earlier post, but too many people replied before I could do so.
The patch notes only indicate Fire Chains was nerfed by 20% (I swore I saw them mention Molten). However, I also believe they mentioned there was an issue where Molten was bypassing resistances, which was making it tick for more damage than intended. I haven't had time to search for it at work today, or I would post it.
Call it anecdotal for now, but I find molten to be doing significantly less damage than before (with no upgrades in gear or skills). I was nearly melting before; now I can actually walk on it for multiple seconds, and even fight in it if the mobs aren't heavy hitters themselves (Act 3).
-edit- It could also be that some affixes (including molten) are tied to a monster's base damage, and therefore was indirectly nerfed from the nerf to all monster types.
Quote from "Blizzard" »
Act III and Act IV
Normal monster health increased by 10%
Elite monster health reduced by 2.5%
Overall damage done by all monsters reduced by 15%

I've found many posts on the official forums discussing whether or not molten is bugged and/or whether or not ground effects are bypassing resistances, but have not yet found any blue posts on the subject. Will keep googling later.
The Burning(?) Constructs in Act2 are definitively borked. They do far more damage than their counterparts, and an elite one is basically a 5-affix pain in the ass. NERF PLZ!

There was a blue post very early, stating that there were no changes to molten.
I agree with those feeling that molten does more damage in some situations. I think what has been mentioned before is important, namely that it is stacking now. So if you're in very close range to a molten mob, you have to keep moving to avoid getting huge ticks. A single track of molten seems less worrisome, but those never bothered me.
The most crazy fire damage is from the fire grids in the Keeps Depth level 1. They kill me in 2-3 ticks, despite 40k health and 600 resists. Was the same I think before the patch.
Yes, the fire grids in the Keep are absolutely ridiculous. I hate when I generate a map with them in it.
I have also noticed that molten hurts me more. I am a well-geared barb farming act 3 with relative ease. Molten always hurt before the patch too, but since the patch I find I have to move around alot more when dealing with molten-equipped monsters. I chalk it up to one of three things:
1. Maybe since most high-damage affixes got nerfed, we have gotten more accustomed to standing around during elite battles, and are just lazier now. Since molten didn't get nerfed, it catches us off guard sometimes.
2. It stacks differently, as someoned mentioned earlier.
3. It is somehow tied into the mob's base damage, also mentioned earlier.
Either way, I'm almost glad there is still an affix I have to seriously be careful to avoid. I still think there should be atleast one or two crazy affix combos that should be feared...makes the victory more thrilling/more adrenaline.

I take pride in never avoiding those fuckers. And I swear, as a monk with only 729 res all, I do fine. I've actually encountered such a pat yesterday that had jailer, vortex, arcane, desecrator. I never die more than once to them, and that's with 30k dps.
The issue I have with molten, is not only the amount of damage, its partly the monk mechanic. With my Barb, I can stay in front of the mob, hitting it without getting hit by the fire. But as for my monk, who uses Thunderclap, the teleporting hit puts me inside the mob, even when it is just standing there, so I cant avoid the fire at all. Its rather annoying.

This is exactly why I use Deadly Reach/Keen Eye instead of Fists of Thunder.
No clue if it was an intended change or not, but I have noticed it. 3 or 4 mobs stacking their molten is enough to hurt my monk pretty bad.

That thing is definitely overpower!
