I commend the news guys around here for not running rumor as fact and requiring a bit more than the promises of those who are out for blood that it's all legit before throwing an article up on the front page. It takes a lot more character to hold off on an iffy story and maintain integrity than it does to just throw anything you come across out on the airways (see: Balloon Boy) so that you can be the first to get the "scoop" regardless of the consequences. Remember, folks, printing false information about someone is libel and very well can result in a lawsuit.
Somehow if David Brevik told Jay Wilson to "fuck off" in a public forum I doubt the people calling for Jay Wilson to be fired would demand that David Brevik be fired, though. It's a story fueled by hatred and complete loss of rationale, nothing more, nothing less.
And in the end, seriously, let's all stop and think about it for a second. How does something like this can affect the game or our gameplay experiences, at all? I'm sure we'll see some tinfoil hatters answering this one, though...
With so much to do and experience in 1.0.4, it amazes me how much people are still wasting their breath and time on this issue that's 100% non-related to the game. I guess a lot of people like some drama in their lives (soap operas, tv series).
I don't think they lost sight of it, I just think they weren't really aiming it at people in the particular category. The assumption that "If you loved D2, then D3 is for you" is just not a good one. If you're after a 'the same but better' sequel, Torchlight's probably a better place to go (although the mood is a lot different).
I totally agree they didn't aim for people like me, the massive outpouring of displeasure shows just how many of Diablo's base they've angered. It's no secret the WoW developers of Blizzard Irvine basically kicked Blizzard North to the curb, injected their own new direction will into the game pissing on many of the Diablo fan base.
I bought 3 copies of D3, one for my wife, one for my son, and the legendary edition for me. After seeing me play, my son hasn't bothered playing once, the shrink wrap still on the box sitting on his desk. My wife played for a week and lost interest and hasn't played again, I feel like I wasted $300 on the game.
I hear what you are saying, the thing I think a lot of people (including Blizzard Irvine) seemed to have forgotten was a lot us played Diablo simply because it was just entertaining. The story line, the NPC dialog humor, the eerie feeling of the game, being able to dungeon crawl, and just being the hero was all it took to keep a lot of us happy. I never had an interest at defeating hell mode or ever bothered playing in hardcore mode. Diablo and Diablo2 was highly successful as a stand alone game, I never liked playing it online, too many ass hat griefers in D1 and too many jerks in D2. Blizzard totally lost sight of that fact in D3.
Well, I never played Hardcore either - the idea of working hard on a toon and then losing it completely due to a tiny misstep just never sounded fun to me. Plus it was just more levelling which got pretty old after the first couple of times. I never heard of anyone who didn't want to complete Hell but to each their own
I think the major problem with having a two-mode game is how confusing and frustating it would be to new players. Imagine launch week when the servers would go down a lot - all those players would be "oh ok then I'll just play offline" and then later on they find out that their offline mode character can't be played online and they'd be like WTF THAT SUCKS!!! Which yeah, it does but that's how it has to be so the game doesn't become a haxxfest like D1. So a huge proportion of the base would wind up "marooned" in offline mode which runs counter to the whole intent of the game, it's really supposed to be played online with friends.
Plus of course they'd have to maintain both simultaneously and that's just a waste of their time. I think ultimately having it online only was the right choice.

Well, the last version of "Diablo 3" they were working on was an MMO so...
Such a tired conversation. D2 was better blah blah blah.
OMG in D3 they have a storyline! THE WORLD IS ENDING!
OMG in D3 they aren't using a talent tree! THE WORLD IS ENDING!
OMG in D3 they are going to have 2 auction houses! YAY! (then after release) THE WORLD IS ENDING!
You know what is different between the games?
D3's difficulty is hugely increased compared to D1 and D2.
D3 did away with the need to haunt trade channels for 3-4 hours a night.
D3 did away with "all4SoJ" trade games.
D3 did away with the 3 boss farm and repeat.
D3 made a better MF system with NV.
D3 made better graphics and a destructible environment that is actually pretty cool.
D3 is adding PvP arena and have done away with worrying about backstabbers in public games.
The only real change in D3 that makes you people cry is the fact that the difficulty makes gear more important that it was in D1 and D2. D1 and D2 you could play through front to back only using blue garbage that dropped for you. Hell, you could use the immortal kings set in D2 and clear normal and nightmare with it. Pathetic. Now gear matters, if you don't get the gear you don't progress, this is a complete 180 from D2. Do you really think you got more better drops in D2 than D3? Are you kidding me? You only think that because D2 has been out and played for what? 10? 11? years? Like anyone is going to accurately remember how D2 was in its first year. Such a joke.
As to Jay apologizing, fuck that. His apology was forced. Brevik took a big'ole steaming dump on a game Bliz has been working on for 3ish years. Yeah I would be pissed to. Jay proved himself to be a human being with emotions. @Brevik, yeah, Fuck that loser. Anyone who doesn't see a reason for Jay's reaction is either emotionally fucked up or just plain retarded. You put 3ish years of your life into a project and have a former fellow employee/friend come along and shit on it and see how you all feel.

I take it you haven't played since the patch?
The game is more like Diablo 2 than ever, the good parts of Diablo 2 at least. Nothing about the game reminds me of WoW (which I never liked). And the team at Blizzard has pretty much bent over backwards to re-shape the game to this point in what? A couple months?
I just don't think that critique makes much sense now without some measure of example and useful anecdote to back it up.

I've been playing normal mode most every day for an hour or two, I have not bothered with nightmare mode because the 3 or 4 times I've played it, I have not liked how the glowing mini-bosses you come across in each map are significantly more powerful than the regular enemies you fight.
One minute you are fighting at one pace, the next you are changing tactics entirely to compensate for the drastic change in difficulty, that's not fun to me, it's aggravating.
UPDATE
So just to give nightmare mode another shot after the patch I just played through Leoric's crown with my Demon Hunter. The real test is when I get to the goat men, that seems to be where the mini-bosses start to get there teeth. But even crawling through the crypts the mini bosses required a massive number of shots and I found myself a few times lacking discipline or hatred and found the battles bordering on not being enjoyable.
I added some screen shots of the ones that chased me around until I shot them 150 fricken laughable times before they finally went down. Diablo 2 was never like that in nightmare mode, the mini-bosses were more difficult as they should be, but not to the point where you had to wail on them for a full minute before they went down. I just don't find that kind of game play to be enjoyable, it reminds me of 80's arcade games where you are just shooting for a high score.
A large part of me wants to rant at Jay Wilson for all that is wrong with D3, instead I'll say I'm glad to hear he is considering a players 8 type patch to allow users to change game play difficulty.
I love D3 normal mode, I have not and will not bother playing nightmare or further because D3 does not scale evenly from normal to nightmare like D2 did so well. I never played Diablo to defeat the highest levels. I played hell mode once in D2 for just Act I, after that I never bothered playing it again because it wasn't fun for me. I could play and defeat D3 in nightmare, but it would be more of a frustration than fun for me, so I'm left with normal mode unless Blizzard fixes how D3's game play scales up.
I really hope they do, because I probably won't play D3 much longer in normal mode.

Uh..... what?
Nightmare and all of Hell until you hit A4 are a complete joke as far as skill level required. My 12 year old nephew cleared hell completely and hit 60 in A4 Hell. I call bullshit, you are lying sir.

Right, I'm just a scared defenseless little girl who needs to be protected from the D3 monsters. Your 12 year old nephew who has nothing but time in his hands to play games 24/7
If you read my comments above you will see I never played Diablo to be the uber-king-of defeating Diablo in all the difficulty levels, that's not why I play computer games. I started playing Diablo when it first came out in the late 90's, so I'm no spring chicken to it.

90's?!~
Maybe he meant Rogue instead of Diablo boy I didn't even play games back then...
No you are right, I was off by 10 years, dyslexia'd the numbers in my head. I thought 1989 when I should have thought 1998. My first IT tech job was in 1989, I first played Diablo in 1998. My bad.
I first played Pong in 1972, OK I've now dated myself.

Good god, where to even start with this sack of bologna. I truly can't tell whether you're just the biggest Diablo forum warrior ever (to be judged by your mass of posts but absolute zero ability to actually play the game), or if you're just a massive troll who enjoys fuming over stuff that even begins to excite the working areas of your brain when engaging in strenuous activity. That isn't even beginning to address the tangential nature of your posts regarding the original topic at hand.
If you don't play games to beat the hardest parts, why the fuck are you bitching about the hardest parts? You either care about them or you don't. Or you're a troll. That's my bet.
I'll just say this: Diablo 3 is being worked on by a group that is almost entirely different than the group who did D1 and D2. If anyone thinks this isn't a legitimate reason for changes in the overall attitude and ideology of where the Diablo franchise is headed, they should check into a mental institution immediately.
Dave Brevik may not be a loser, but he sure is an asshole. Only an asshole goes out of his way to make back-handed remarks about something heopenly admitted to understanding as different based on the change in personnel. If Jay Wilson made those same remarks about Dave Brevik's shit, and Dave Brevik called Jay Wilson a loser, would we be having this conversation? Nope - aren't double standards great? Personal ire and spite is fun! Weeee, I love the internet!
