New scam doing the rounds

  • #1
It's a few months old, but haven't seen it posted here yet so thought I'd drop a heads-up for the uninitiated.

Now it almost goes without saying, you should never download or execute files from an untrusted source, and this scam is exactly why.

People will post on general LF 1 more to join goblin farming group or hardcore farming group.

They will chat you up to make you believe they are legit, question your dps gear and MF gear. At some point you will be asked to dl a magic gear swap program, and they will provide you a link.

When you execute the .exe its just an AutoIT script, it dumps all the gear you are wearing, and they snatch it up asap.

Happened to a friend of mine ( who is a moron ), but luckily a very poor player, I helped him replace all his gear with a few hundred k.

Threaded because I've seen alot of these spammers of late.

    Thanks for the heads up

Seriously.. who falls for these things...

they did this all the time in D2, the poor people who still fall for these. I'm just glad the old trade screen swap out doesn't exist since person to person trading is non existent.

    Apparently a lot of people.
Aside from that having a single set of gear makes me inherently safe ;)

    Morons, as mentioned... ;)

Kids usually fall for this sort of thing :-/ They don't know any better.

Honestly... who in the World is so NAIVE to download and run programs like that?

First thing you learn on the Internet --> Never ever trust anyone you dont know.

When you download a bot for magic find swapping you deserve it anyway.

this. you are ready to break ToS and risk ban so you deserve what ever goes upon you(or your hypothetical friend)

thanks for the heads up but cant say people who fall for it dont deserve it, its silly to follow links especially when they are not from a reliable source, ie curse or blizz themselfs

Just because something should be obvious doesn't mean that they deserve what happens to them. "He left his door ajar while he left to go to the corner shop for milk and the house got robbed." "Lol scrub. Should've shut the door and locked it, got what he deserved."

People do stupid things, but never forget that it's the person that takes advantage of such things that is bad.

The people who fall for this would never read your post in the first place. To them it's just lots of long words and reading and thinking and other stuff they don't like.

Look at it from a Darwinian perspective - these people are simply the weak among the herd and it's only natural that they're the ones to suffer for it. Nothing you can do can help them, short of being their babysitter. So just observe, and try to be detached about it.

PS - watch more nature documentaries. The BBC's Life and Planet Earth series are both fantastic - though be sure to get the versions narrated by Sir David Attenborough and not Oprah / Sigourney Weaver. It'll help you see the same trends among us that exist among wildlife. Fascinating =)

(Emphasis mine.) Taking your argument to its natural albeit extreme conclusion, Hitler had the right idea about Jews, gypsies, physically challenged, mentally challenged, and politicians who didn't have friends to protect them.

And that's why we do not apply Darwinism of animals to human beings. We are intelligent and have morals that say we do not do that sort of thing to each other.

Now let's stop debating whether "they" deserve it or not and just be aware of the scam and spread the word to friends.

You Godwin'd it, not me. You have only yourself to blame =)

On a more serious note, come on... getting scammed in a video game and getting deprived of food and water before being gassed to death should never be compared. Even if the principle is the same, the scale is so different that it just makes no sense.

As I mentioned, even if they heed your warning on this particular threat, their inability to think will not prevent other threats and you may only save them from themselves by being their lifelong babysitter... My only point was to help people to gain a little perspective and perhaps a chuckle. After all, life is a comedy to those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Thank you for the heads-up, Zergie.

To certain commenters: This isn't meant to be a place to argue that the person(s) deserved it. As Medea has pointed out, it's simply a topic to warn others about another scam. If you feel so strongly about it, please create a new topic (if there isn't one already).

As I'm one who you're referring to, I should clarify my position since you've mistaken it, preferring to portray me as evilly as possible.

I simply have a lighthearted view on the human condition. I don't think people deserve to feel bad or anything so sinister.

So please, lighten up. Turn hat frown upside down, even if it takes eviscerating a clown. Because clowns -DO- deserve it. IMO.
