Don't know if it's a success story, but I've sold items for 200$ multiple times. Selling for a friend also
Just sold a decent MF intel socket helm for 40. Anything over 50$ goes to paypal, bout 500$ so far for me, and about 400$ for him, and anything under adds to the bnet balance, so far about 600$, selling items for 3.95 and 9.99 depending on what stats they roll
I like the bnet balance because once it hits 250$ selling things I don't want, wicked upgrade. Well when people were using it anyway, top tier stuff stays in the GAH now, 250$ RMAH is 100 mill, so if you think your item is > 100 mill, it doesn't go into the RMAH, but my wiz is certainly sitting pretty with some nice RMAH purchases from money made off of RMAH

Wow, very nice. I bet a few extra hundred in your pocket doesn't hurt, huh? Lol. How long did it take you to accumulate all of that, though, if you don't mind me asking?
I am very busy as I work full time and am studying for my LSAT exam. I get to play D3 2-3 times a week if I am lucky. I have bought 3 different items on the RMAH for a total of $15 dollars. My character feels very elite and my attacks per second is over 3 with my DH. I consider this a sucess story.

Lol nice, yea my mains been my DH since launch, with only a couple GAH items bought on him, the rest I found. Can't effectively farm act 3 and 4, but he's still a lot of fun =)
Got my monk to 60 the other day tho, and decided what the hell, let's see what I can get for $30 bucks. I'm now at ~20k dps, just under 1k all resis, over 5k armor, just under 2k LOH and ATM I'm questing through act 1 with my dps spec, face tanking everything. Success! lol
I only play about an hour a day farming act 3 and I play a WD (slooooow farmer) but I've made $150 so far after the fees. I typically sell anything on the RMAH that I think will be worth at least $20. I'm just glad I paid for the game, that was my goal.
I’ve seen a lot of people with over $500 even close to $1000 on their RMAH sales. As for myself, I have about $80 in Bnet with close to 400 hours. I haven’t got any big payoffs (gold or RM), so I am still waiting for that godly drop. If I ever quit, I have enough on my DH to make back $60 and then some, and all of the gear on my DH was either dropped or bought off GAH.
I have only spent $5 of my own dollars in the very beginning to upgrade my bow. After that I never spent any of my money on the RMAH. It’s pretty fun selling stuff on the RMAH; I suggest you give it a try.
I sold all my gold (40M) for real money the day that it was available, I made up 85$ without the cut = ~65$ USD after
Transfered it to paypal ASAP and to be honest after 250 hours of gaming time I had no upgrade from myself, the game is funny at the start but not rewarding at ALL so I realised that im not a farming bitch and stop playing.
All of my friend have left this game, yes i said ALL
Edit: after I made my real money$, all of my hate for this game have disapeared with a new feeling that blizzard have failed on the loot system and that I dont fucking care anymore because I got my money BACK and never, (never say never) never a blizzard game will have my money in the first year of a release.
I am routinely buying items off the RMAH for 3-5 dollars, selling them on GAH for 6-10mil gold, then selling the gold for 2.12 per million (after bliz cut). I make a cash profit on every single purchase. Sounds like 100% win to me.
Overall it sounds like it's very reasonable to at least be able to get back what I paid for the game. That alone would make me happy, lol. I've picked up a couple legendary items, I'll go see what they're worth.
I do wish Blizzard didn't take part of the money from the transaction, though. :/
How are you guys making your $$? My stuff isn't moving at all. I price lower than the market and it still doesn't sell. How do price appropriately?
Typically I start it high (and hope to get lucky) and keep reducing the price each day if it doesn't sell.
I've been having trouble selling my items this past week though. No one is buying (although the ones I'm trying to sell are only so-so items). I recently moved one item over to the gold house this morning and it sold already... so I dunno.

This is symptomatic of people who over value shitty drops simply because it's their shitty drops. My friend complains about this saying the gear he's trying to sell is just as good as the gear he wears, but the gear he wears is hardly better than whites so...
Yeah, figure out the price, if it doesn't sell drop by 15%, repost.
I should have kept a spreadsheet, it would have been awesome to have for comparison.
But the one item i remember was the lvl 63 pants
2 sockets
+280 armor
170 intel
175 vit
+60 all res
The only reason I didn't keep them was they had no MF
I posted them in RMAH for 175, they sold in about 10 minutes. Those were by far the best pants I'd found, I just couldn't sack the mf on my depth diggers, which I'd paid 50$ for in RMAH, using my bnet bucks
Time accumulating all of it, well I tried to stay away from RMAH at first, but once I ran out gold slots I started selling in it, maybe about 2 - 3 weeks in, which led me to accidently putting a few auctions into bnet dollars, to the tune of like 100 bucks. Then i was like, well I should spend it since I can't transfer it, used it to buy some upgrade I can't remember. After that I thought bugger it, people are posting awesome stuff in here, and I can buy it with money made from selling mid tier items.
So probs half my gear now is bnet dollar purchases. Most of which comes from selling items from 9.99 and 3.95, prob takes me 2 - 3 weeks to get up to 250$ then i hunt for an upgrade. Though I've never paid 250$ for anything, my biggest purchase was the occulus for 150$
I can guarantee my old orb source with similar stats but no MF, will sell for 75 - 100, so I paid 50 bnet bucks for the mf
Wiz is currently 98.5k dps, 44k hp, 37% crit chance, 300% crit dmg, 4.4% life leech, base of 151 m/f. So thank you RMAH, works for me even if I don't find OP items..
I wonder if this will give me enough motivation to farm a little and try to make back the money I spent on the Collector's Edition. The game just didn't turn out to be as good as I thought it would be. Would be nice knowing I got the money back. Maybe even a little more.
Then maybe come back in the future after some patches.
And if anyone has any (real!) success stories, I would love to hear them.

Why do you think it was done in the first place? Hoping these funds will go back into the game, i.e. ongoing patches.
however as other people have pointed out you want to put medium ticket items in the RMAH
a two dollar item nets you 85 cents after fee's
a 500k gold auction nets you 90 cents after selling the gold
Just be aware of the price points
Typically I start it high (and hope to get lucky) and keep reducing the price each day if it doesn't sell.

I can understand not buying things but not wanting free money sounds more like... Failure!
