I never understood this mentality. It seems very similar to WoW's anti-addon crowd. People eschew the designers' intent in both cases and feel smugly superior about it.
Its not about feeling superior or anything. If my gear is mostly AH based, then I lost interest in what the creeps are droping, and without the item hunting, this game is reduced to nothing.
Without using the AH, there is some expectation about whats gonna drop next time you kill something, even if the result is that I got worse quality items, I think it worth it.

What do you think?
isnt the expectation of getting a valuable item to sell just as good? i mean the facts are that only about 20% of good items that drop will benefit you, while with the auction house you raise that to a 100%...
if the rapid switching of gear and upgrades is what u miss, maybe you should try making a new hero, that way you could enjoy the item hunting personaly and try a different class...
bottom line is that i dont belive that inferno is possible without ah.

Of course it's possible. It's 100% possible. It would take a very long time though unless you got extremely lucky with drops. I think that is really how that rumor got started. People don't want to put in the time to get the gear. Yes I am flat out saying that 400+ hours is a drop in the bucket when it comes to games like this. The AH though offers a path of least resistance and most people will take that option when presented to them. Ideas take on a life of their own though and it turns into "fact" that "you have to spend xxx million gold to get through Act II inferno and then another xxx million to make it through ACT III". It is simply just not the case.
Kudos to you for qualifying that it is your belief though. While everyone should understand that when you say something like that it is of course an opinion. this is the internet and you can't take anything for granted.
The OP is right on the upgrade part. If you go and spend a ton of money on almost exactly what you want on the AH (minus a few rolled stat points or w/e) then good luck actually finding a straight upgrade from that item. It can happen as it's happened to me, but people complaining that nothing ever drops don't seem to realize this =D
Of course is only my opinion and my way to play the game.. if other ppl are having fun by relying almost exclusively on the AH to make a progress, is ok with me, but that is killing the fun factor in my experience.
However, I'm going to keep items that don't fit my current characters, because I want to roll 5 characters eventually, so If I find a good item for, let say, a Monk, I'll keep it.

well it must be or how else did the first players to beat it do so. I mean they were the first so there was no gear to buy yet.

I think that I'd rather be able to finish the game in a timely manner rather than farming gear for 1-2 years.

I think that's a lot what made D2 a great game, and that's probably the reason a lot of people dislike D3 currently (saying there's no end-game, item hunting is boring, upgrades never drop, etc.).
That's likely what they don't understand, that using the AH will spoil you when it comes to item drops, and oh boy do people use the AH.
Personally, I need to make the most out of my little playtime, so I definitely use the AH and then proceed to enjoy hunting stuff on Inferno
Really? So when I find an awesome pair of (let's say) gloves for a barb, a class that I don't have, I should just vendor them? This is what you would do, right? I mean, you don't use the AH, and I fail to see how using the trade channel is any different, so you must be throwing away a lot of good gear that your class can't use. Please enlighten me.
Just out of curiosity what is the difference between
"Old way"
Player A finding a good item intended for Player B
Taking days of posting in trade chat or forums to finally get in contact with each other.
Player B offering and item that Player A wants or gold.
Sealing the deal.
"New way"
Player A finds a good item. (Item intended for Player B.)
Player A sells item for gold on AH. (Player B bought the item because Player B needs it)
Player A uses gold to buy an item Player A needs. (Now Player C makes gold to buy what he needs)
Imho, AH speeds the whole process up. I still get excited to find an awesome item cause I know I can sell that and get something I need for my class. Since D3 include both options of trade (chat and AH), what is there to complain about?

The difference is that one requires critical thinking to realize it's exactly the same as the other way, just far faster and more efficient (using a universal currency). Also, it's one more thing to complain about without fully understanding it.
Tough to say which factor is more determinant in this issue.

Check the part when I said that I'd like to roll 5 characters, so if I find a good item for a character I dont have right now, I keep it.

But if it floats your boat then go for it.
This analogy doesn't work for WoW PvP really since when tournaments were popular you couldn't use addons. So if you did use them you were basically playing on an uneven playing field against the best players who had to avoid them.
It works for PvE though, especially in old school WoW. People would avoid addons even though they made it many many times harder to remove buffs, etc. Which is just gimping yourself. I'm not even talking about the addons that played the game for you, but the more basic ones that people would avoid in the early days.
But the point is accurate though, the designers clearly built the game around people using the AHs. To not use them is like playing the game with empty equipment slots, or no pots, or using auto-attack to kill every enemy, etc etc. You're just gimping yourself to make the game last longer.
I mean you should play the game however you want and I agree that it could be more enjoyable without AHs. Mainly I'm criticizing the people who say "don't like the AHs, don't use them." Which is really dumb when you consider how the game is designed. But yeah, if you find it more enjoyable to not use the AHs, then go for it.

Im going to use my gold to buy gems, repairs, roll some crafting stuff, etc.

If i didnt use the AH, my Sorc would wear a Belt and 1 Ring right now....
Rest naked.... and this with 500 Played Hours.
That didn't make any sense.

So let me get this straight.
You went through Normal, Nightmare, and Hell and only found 1 belt and 1 ring for wizard?
Honestly, I had to use the AH for inferno but half of my inferno gear I have is farmed by myself.
So either you are doing something terribly wrong or you are just bad at aRPGs in general. Not really an issue with the AH.
