No, you don't need MF at all, especially since it does close to nothing right now anyway.
Ha, so I was infracted for replying to you because your the news reporter. That's awesome. Glad to see this site takes care of its own at the cost of the community to which is it supposed to report.
But anyways, I will reply to you again.
You are AMAZINGLY and TERRIBLY wrong to the point that I doubt you even play D3. To sit there and try to tell anyone that MF does nothing is.... the most amazing display of ignorance I have ever seen. I have 300 MF when I am farming and elite packs drop an average of 3 rares for me, so are you going to really sit there and tell me if I had 0 MF I would still be getting 3 rare drops a pack on average? Really? How exactly is it that you became the News Reporter for this site when you don't even play Diablo 3 enough to know how MF works?
Edit: Before you delete this post like you did the previous one I was infracted for I assure you I will just repost it. So ban me or leave it be.
Easy now. My monk gets 2 rares off most elites and 3 rares off at least every other elite pack. Any guesses how much MF he's rocking? 13%, hear me roar. I would say that as long as you are doing longer runs (getting 5 stacks is just the warm-up to your run) instead of short spam runs, then MF is quite negligible.
What it comes down to is that MF is still just a game of chance, but if you get 5 stacks and keep killing then those are guaranteed rares. Once you're getting guaranteed rares i'd say more stats for speed killing is pretty nice, but that's a personal preference that blizzard deliberately built into the game: slower killing with more MF versus faster killing with less MF. I prefer make my own luck rather than relying on hope to get drops.
personally, i hate magic find. because in the end, its still RNG. magic find does increase the odds, but if the RNG gods hate you, you still wont find anything.
one person with zero MF might find 5 legendaries while one with 446% MF finds none, or visa versa. i dont wanna gimp my damage/survivability for magic find to make the game harder than it needs to be. and i cant afford the 'perfect gear' cuz im not a chinese gold farmer or a (good with money) auction house user

When you're playing the lotto, the more tickets you have, the better your chances.
Buy all the tickets you want, statistically you still stand a better chance to die on your trip to get the tickets than your chance to actually win the lotto. I'll take getting more guaranteed drops faster over killing slower with crossed fingers that your non combat stat does something this time.
Which brings up another point, you're ignoring that having less magic find SHOULD mean that you have more actual combat stats, which means you're killing and clearing much faster. So I ask you, which of us is truly getting extra lotto tickets?
edit - or shall i say, lootto tickets har har har. Had to fill my quota for bad joke of the day
I have tried a gimped DPS build with magic find, an average dps average MF build and an all out damage build with only MF on pieces that have it in my dps set and on my follower.
For me personally I prefer killing elite packs in 1-3 seconds on my monk with it's insane spike damage between Overawe and Faith in the Light + Wall of Light. It just boils down to being more fun than slowly killing groups with a higher chance at loot. Now if MF actually made the gear itself better (not just higher quality) I would use MF, but until that change im going to play the game the fun way and watch my e-peen grow everytime I crit a mob for 250k
I've found 9 legendaries and two set items (tals & Innas) in the last three weeks with zero MF other than NV....and the Tals dropped with exactly zero.
With guarantee drops with a 5 stack...I'm not sure I understand the point of MF at all in D3. You're going to get something and MF doesn't increase the chance that said drops will be of any better quality than what will drop without it.......stacking NV of course.
In my MF suit I get 3 rares / pack. I laugh when people talk about a guaranteed 1 rare per pack and then complain that they never get any good stuff. When you're playing the lotto, the more tickets you have, the better your chances.
White trash investment strategies aside..........
I'm really only speaking toward folks whom don't have the ability/gear to farm efficiently with high MF. Of course higher MF = higher returns....but not if someone is struggling to kill, kiting packs around for 3-5 minutes until they're enraged and/or have run up a 33,000g repair bill.
I don't think a lot of people in here realize what mf does.
First, there's the guaranteed loot (1 from elite and 2 from bosses at 5NV), and that's not affected by mf. If you kill 10 packs with 5NV you will get at least 10 rares no matter what your mf is.
Now, excluding the guaranteed rares, say for every 10 magic or higher quality items that drops for you, 1 of those happen to be rare with 0 mf (on avarage and I'm completely pulling out numbers here, don't quote me on this). Once you equipped 100% mf this double the chance for the magic quality or higher to become rare (and also more chance for white to turn blue, but let's ignore that for now). As a result now you're seeing 2 rares for every 10 magic or better items.
If you're only interested in rares (as most of us are), then you could say equipping 100% mf doubles the rate you're finding rares (it also double the rate at which you're getting blue and legendary, but it can be a bit complicated, let's just say it double rares only). This means if you're equipping 100% mf and killing stuff at half the pace, you should be seeing the same amount of rares. On the other hand, if you're using 0% mf and kill twice as fast, then it makes no difference you're still getting as many drops as you could've with 100% mf.
Now, this DOES NOT take into account of the guaranteed drops and 75% mf from NV. This can depend on how many of your drop comes from the guaranteed loots, but it makes killing with 0%mf twice as fast slightly more profitable.
However, from experience I find that wearing 135% mf gives you a yield of about 2-3 expected rares per elite pack at 5NV, while running 0%mf gives you about 1-2 expected rares (both of these includes the guaranteed rares). My friend who always run at 0% mf also notice a huge boost in rare drops when I join his party.
Moral of the story? mf gives you the most rare/hr per stat budget, provided that you don't gimp yourself too much and takes forever to kill/die too often. My advice is to not forsake dps for the sake of mf (a bit is fine), but if you can find upgrade with mf on it, the more bonus for you. Of course, if you're having problem dying you might also want to rethink about lowering defensive stat for mf.

Saying you have 13% MF and you average 2 rare drops on elite packs is a lie, sorry. Do you get 2 on occasion? Of course you do, but is it your average? Not unless you are one of the luckiest people on the face of the planet. My old progression gear set, the set I used to kill Diablo Inferno had 50 MF on it. I can count on one hand how many times I dropped more than one rare off an elite pack with a 5 stack of NV.
i run with 0% MF and found an awesome natalaya's gaze today from a random trash mob... MF only increases the CHANCE you will get more yellow+ items not the type of item, stats of the item or ilvl of the item... i dont believe in gear swapping either, and i still get the occasional awesome item from act 1 farming...

With or without MF, with godly gear or trash gear, you're still better off in act 1. The elites have so much fewer hitpoints, allowing you to kill them so much faster, that it entirely negates the lower drop rate of high iLvl rares. With this in mind, since act 1 is easily farmable in a high MF, low dps / survivability outfit, you're best off farming act 1 with high MF. Even if you have a billion gold, or thousands to drop on the RMAH, if you want to loot good gear act 1 is your best option.
